The verdict in three sentences
For an industrial supplier in Berlin, OCI or cXML punchout stops being optional the moment a key account runs procurement through SAP Ariba, Coupa or SAP SRM: without a connector, you stay off the approved supplier list. The realistic 2026 budget sits between EUR 8,000 and 25,000 excluding VAT, depending on the number of platforms, customer-specific catalogs and invoice automation. Delivered in 6 to 10 weeks, the project usually pays for itself by the second or third key account ordering without manual re-entry.
OCI, cXML, static catalog: what you are actually buying
Punchout lets the buyer leave their e-procurement tool, browse your B2B store with negotiated prices, then send the cart back into their internal approval workflow. Two protocols dominate: OCI (Open Catalog Interface), the SAP ecosystem standard, very common among German industrial groups, and cXML, used by Ariba, Coupa, Jaggaer and most US platforms. Many German suppliers must support both.
| Component | 2026 range (excl. VAT) | Indicative timeline | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| OCI connector (SAP SRM, SAP MM) | EUR 5,000 to 9,000 | 3 to 4 weeks | NEW_ITEM field mapping |
| cXML connector (Ariba, Coupa) | EUR 6,000 to 12,000 | 4 to 5 weeks | PunchOutSetupRequest and OrderRequest |
| Customer-specific catalogs | EUR 1,500 to 3,000 per customer | 1 week per customer | Contract prices, restricted range |
| cXML order intake into ERP | EUR 3,000 to 6,000 | 2 weeks | No re-keying into SAP B1, Odoo or DATEV-linked tools |
| E-invoicing (cXML Invoice, ZUGFeRD/XRechnung) | EUR 2,500 to 5,000 | 2 weeks | Aligned with German B2B e-invoicing rules |
| Certification testing with the buyer | EUR 1,000 to 2,500 | 1 to 2 weeks | Test environment provided by the customer |
| Annual maintenance | 12 to 18% of build | ongoing | Buyer platform updates |
A minimal project, one protocol and one customer, starts around EUR 8,000 excl. VAT. A complete project, OCI plus cXML, five customer catalogs, ERP integration and e-invoicing, reaches EUR 20,000 to 25,000 excl. VAT.
Hidden fees on the buyer platform side
The connector is only part of the bill. Some platforms also charge the supplier, and this line often surprises sales directors.
| Platform | 2026 supplier fees (order of magnitude) | Protocol | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| SAP Business Network (Ariba) Standard | EUR 0 | cXML | Limited features, no advanced punchout |
| SAP Business Network Enterprise | 0.155% of volume, capped around EUR 20,000 per year | cXML | Volume and document thresholds |
| Coupa Supplier Portal | EUR 0 (free CSP) | cXML | Punchout configured by the buyer |
| SAP SRM or S/4HANA via OCI | EUR 0 | OCI | Set up by the buyer's IT team |
| Jaggaer, Ivalua | EUR 0 to a few thousand per year | cXML or OCI | Negotiated case by case |
| Third-party punchout SaaS | EUR 300 to 1,200 per month | OCI and cXML | Alternative to custom development |
The third-party SaaS route is tempting for a first customer, but beyond three or four key accounts, a connector built into your B2B store becomes cheaper over three years and keeps you in control of your prices and data.
Mini case study
Claire, sales director of a mechanical parts and PPE supplier in Berlin, has just been approached by five key accounts, including two automotive suppliers on Ariba and a chemicals group on SAP SRM.
- Budget: OCI and cXML connectors EUR 16,000, five customer catalogs EUR 10,000, Odoo integration EUR 4,000, i.e. EUR 30,000 excl. VAT in build, reduced to EUR 22,000 by sharing catalogs between two subsidiaries of the same group.
- Productivity gain: 400 orders a month previously re-keyed at 6 minutes each, i.e. 40 hours a month freed for order administration, roughly EUR 1,400 of loaded monthly payroll.
- Commercial gain: estimated additional revenue of EUR 380,000 per year across the five accounts, at a 28% gross margin, i.e. EUR 106,000 of margin.

FAQ
Do I have to choose between OCI and cXML?
No, the buyer dictates the protocol. A German supplier selling into DACH has roughly a 60% chance of meeting OCI on the SAP side, while international groups mostly use cXML through Ariba or Coupa.
Can my Shopify or WooCommerce store do punchout?
Yes, through an extension or middleware, for EUR 300 to 1,200 per month. For complex contract catalogs and more than three customers, a dedicated B2B store (Sylius, Shopware, Adobe Commerce or custom) remains more robust.
How long does certification with the customer take?
Allow 1 to 3 weeks of testing in the buyer's staging environment. Their IT team's availability is often the real bottleneck, hence an overall timeline of 6 to 10 weeks.
Does punchout handle mandatory e-invoicing?
The cXML Invoice flow combines with ZUGFeRD or XRechnung, as Germany has required businesses to receive B2B e-invoices since January 2025. Budget EUR 2,500 to 5,000 excl. VAT to automate sending.
What does maintenance cost?
About 12 to 18% of the initial budget per year, i.e. EUR 2,000 to 4,500 for a mid-sized project. Ariba and Coupa evolve their schemas, and each new customer adds a catalog to keep up to date.
