The verdict in three sentences
Winning a new customer costs 5 to 7 times more than getting an existing one to buy more. Bundles, cart cross-sell and post-purchase upsell are the three most direct levers to grow average order value (AOV) without spending a naira more on ads. In Lagos in 2026, a store combining all three routinely adds 20 to 30% of value per order while preserving margin through shared delivery on a single parcel.
Three levers, three measured effects
Each lever acts at a different moment. The bundle is decided on the product page, cross-sell when adding to cart, upsell right after payment. Here are the 2026 orders of magnitude seen on West African stores.
| Lever | Where it acts | Effect on cart | Adoption rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single sale (baseline) | Product page | Base 100 | — |
| Bundle -8% discount | Product page | +21% | 18% of orders |
| Cart cross-sell | Cart page | +14% | 22% of orders |
| Post-purchase upsell | Confirmation page | +6% | 6% of buyers |
| All three combined | Whole journey | +24% average | — |
Key point: the bundle shows a visible discount (-8%) but shares delivery cost on one parcel. Unit margin dips slightly, per-order margin climbs.
Bundle models by category
A good bundle answers an obvious need: what people naturally buy together. Here are models that work by category, with a 2026 order of magnitude (amounts in FCFA equivalent).
| Category | Typical bundle | Separate price | Bundle price | Margin kept |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fashion | Top + bottom + accessory | 32,000 FCFA | 29,000 FCFA | 41% |
| Beauty | Serum + cream + cleanser | 21,000 FCFA | 19,000 FCFA | 47% |
| Grocery | Family basket, 6 items | 18,000 FCFA | 16,500 FCFA | 33% |
| Electronics | Phone + case + screen | 145,000 FCFA | 138,000 FCFA | 22% |
| Home | Kitchen set, 4 pieces | 26,000 FCFA | 23,500 FCFA | 44% |
Simple rule: the bundle discount must stay below the margin gained on shared delivery plus the added product.

Mini case study
Grace, who runs a cosmetics store in Lagos, sells a serum for 12,000 FCFA. Current AOV: 12,000 FCFA, 45% margin, i.e. 5,400 FCFA. She builds a serum + cream + cleanser bundle at 19,000 FCFA (instead of 21,000). Out of 100 orders, 18 switch to the bundle. Those 18 orders bring 18 x 19,000 = 342,000 FCFA instead of 18 x 12,000 = 216,000 FCFA, i.e. 126,000 FCFA of extra revenue for the same acquisition spend. Even at 47% bundle margin she nets 160,740 FCFA on those 18 orders versus 97,200 before. The lever pays off in month one.
FAQ
Doesn't a discounted bundle destroy my margin? No, if well calibrated: the 8% discount is offset by shared delivery and by selling a higher-margin add-on. In most categories per-order margin rises 20 to 40%.
Cross-sell or upsell, which first? Cart cross-sell has the best effort/gain ratio: +14% value at 22% adoption. Post-purchase upsell converts less (6%) but costs nothing since the customer already paid. Do both.
How many products in a bundle? Three is the 2026 sweet spot: enough to justify a discount, simple enough to grasp in one thumb-tap on mobile. Beyond four, adoption drops.
How to show the bundle on mobile? One visual showing all three products together, the struck-through price, the bundle price and the saving shown in FCFA. A 'add X to save Y' progress bar lifts add-to-cart by 16%.
