The verdict in three sentences
In Kuala Lumpur, a private or international school website costs, as a 2026 ballpark, RM 8 000 to 60 000 with a local agency (about 1 800 to 13 600 USD), and a capable Malaysian freelancer can deliver one for RM 2 000 to 10 000 (about 450 to 2 300 USD), often less than Kolonell. Kolonell charges a fixed 2 900, 4 900 or 8 900 USD for the admissions journey, programme pages and open day pages, with native English copy and a project manager, delivered in 3 to 4 weeks on Starter and Growth. Choose Kolonell for predictability, English copy written for expatriate and Malaysian parents, and full ownership of the site; choose a Kuala Lumpur agency if you want Malay, Mandarin and on-campus filming in a single contract.
Is Kolonell cheaper than a Kuala Lumpur agency? Not always
The figures below are prudent ballparks, not official prices. They draw on public rate cards of Klang Valley agencies, minimum project sizes shown on Clutch.co profiles of Malaysian agencies and rates visible on Upwork and Fiverr. Conversions use about RM 4.4 to 1 USD; the rate moves, so redo the maths on the day of the quote.
| Criterion | Kuala Lumpur agency | Freelancer in Malaysia | Kolonell |
|---|---|---|---|
| Build cost, 2026 ballpark | RM 8 000 to 60 000 (about 1 800 to 13 600 USD) | RM 2 000 to 10 000 (about 450 to 2 300 USD) | 2 900 / 4 900 / 8 900 USD, fixed |
| Hourly rate for changes | Often RM 100 to 250 (about 23 to 57 USD) | Often RM 40 to 120 (about 9 to 27 USD) | Extras quoted before work starts |
| Usual timeline | 6 to 12 weeks | 3 to 10 weeks, depending on workload | 3 to 4 weeks; Premium usually 4 to 6 |
| Malay and Mandarin copy | Often available in-house | Depends on the person | Supplied by the school or quoted separately |
| English copy | Variable quality, often written by the school | Usually written by the school | Native English copy included |
| Campus photo and video | Often offered as an option | Rarely | Not offered: your images or a Kuala Lumpur photographer |
| Meetings | In person in Mont Kiara or Bangsar | In person or online | Google Meet at your hour, written update every week |
To be plain: on price alone, a Malaysian freelancer wins. Kolonell brings something else: a price fixed before kickoff, English copy written for parents who are comparing several schools, a project manager, and the handover of every access, with the domain in the school's name. The team is based in Senegal (GMT), eight hours behind Kuala Lumpur: calls fit between 3 pm and 6 pm Kuala Lumpur time, and a written update arrives every week. Payment is by bank transfer or Wise, 50 % at kickoff and 50 % at delivery. Each tier is detailed on our international website offer.
Where does the money go over three years?
The build price tells you very little. A school website changes every intake: fees, calendar, staff, activities. The table applies the same maintenance assumption to all three options, since Kolonell maintenance after the support period is quoted on request.
| Item over 36 months | Kuala Lumpur agency (mid range) | Freelancer | Kolonell Growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website build | RM 30 000, about 6 800 USD | RM 7 000, about 1 600 USD | 4 900 USD |
| Malay and Mandarin copy | Included in the build | RM 3 000, about 700 USD | Translator booked by the school, about 900 USD |
| Campus photos | Included | Local photographer, about 800 USD | Local photographer, about 800 USD |
| Hosting and domain, 3 years | About 400 USD | About 400 USD | About 400 USD |
| Maintenance (same assumption) | 120 USD a month over 33 months, 3 960 USD | 3 960 USD | 3 960 USD, maintenance quoted on request |
| Indicative total | 11 160 USD | 7 460 USD | 10 960 USD |
An honest reading: once translations are added, Kolonell Growth lands close to a mid-range agency, and the freelancer stays the cheapest. The difference lies elsewhere: the risk of a freelancer being unavailable in July, right before the August intake, the number of hours set aside for the yearly fee update, and the quality of the English copy that carries the families' decision.
Which Kolonell tier suits which Kuala Lumpur school?
| School profile | Suggested tier | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 150-child kindergarten in Bangsar | Starter 2 900 USD | Presentation, a typical day, information request form |
| 400-pupil primary school, one curriculum | Growth 4 900 USD | Pages per year group, fees page, link to the admissions software |
| 1 000-pupil through-school, British and IB pathways | Premium 8 900 USD | Journey per pathway, events calendar, 6 months of support |
| Boarding school welcoming pupils from abroad | Premium 8 900 USD | Boarding and student visa pages; custom booking quoted on request |
| School wanting a French and English bilingual site | Premium 8 900 USD | Bilingual FR/EN site included from Premium |
| School wanting a parent portal | Application quoted on request | Grades, attendance and payments call for a custom application |
Kolonell embeds or links the admissions tool the school has chosen (third-party form, enrolment platform, virtual tour hosted elsewhere). Ongoing search work is also quoted on request: no monthly package is sold by default.
What do Kuala Lumpur families look for on a school website?
International schools in the Klang Valley cluster around Mont Kiara, Desa ParkCity, Sri Hartamas, Damansara Heights, Bangsar, Subang Jaya, Cyberjaya and Putrajaya. Malaysian families make up a large share of enrolment in many of them, alongside Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Indian and Western families who came for energy, finance, tech or regional headquarters. Possible programmes range from the British curriculum (IGCSE, A-Levels) to the IB, American and Australian programmes and the Malaysian national curriculum. The site has to answer precise questions:
- Intake dates: most international schools start in August or September, while some private schools follow a January calendar.
- Mid-year arrivals, frequent with corporate transfers.
- Fee breakdown in RM: registration fee, deposit, annual fees, school bus.
- Languages: English first, often Malay and Mandarin for local families, sometimes Korean or Japanese.
- A virtual tour, because many families choose before they land.
- Teacher recruitment, often overseas and several months before the intake.
Compliance, the facts only. Private and international schools in Malaysia operate with Ministry of Education approval; display an accreditation or membership (CIS, IB World School, COBIS, BSO and so on) only if the school actually holds it. The Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA), amended in 2024, governs contact and admissions forms; the data protection notice must be available in Malay and English. Children's data calls for particular care, and every photo of a pupil requires written parental consent. WCAG 2.1 AA remains a sensible accessibility reference. This is not legal advice.

Which red flags should you spot in a quote?
- A price "from RM 1 999" with no page count and no defined admissions form.
- A theme already sold to ten other schools, which parents will recognise.
- A domain or hosting account in the supplier's name.
- A form that sends children's data to a personal mailbox.
- No PDPA notice and no consent box on the form.
- Machine translations nobody has reviewed in Malay or Mandarin.
Questions to ask every supplier: who updates the fee schedule each year, how many hours are included, and what happens if the key person leaves the project.
Mini case study
Illustrative example. Mei Ling T. runs admissions at a 240-pupil English and Mandarin bilingual primary school in Bangsar, with two intakes, in January and August. A local agency quotes her RM 38 000 (about 8 600 USD), Malay and Mandarin copy and photos included. The Kolonell option: Growth at 4 900 USD, a Mandarin translator at RM 4 000 (about 900 USD) and a local photographer at RM 3 500 (about 800 USD), a total of 6 600 USD. The gap of about 2 000 USD (close to RM 8 800) is real but modest. A freelancer also quotes RM 9 000 (about 2 000 USD), with no written schedule. Her deciding factor: who delivers before the October open day and hands over every access.
FAQ
Why pay 2 900 USD when a Kuala Lumpur freelancer asks RM 5 000?
RM 5 000 is about 1 100 USD: the freelancer is clearly cheaper. Kolonell makes sense if you want a fixed price, native English copy, a project manager and 3 months of support after launch.
Can Kolonell write the Malay and Mandarin pages?
That copy is supplied by the school or quoted separately, on every tier. Kolonell writes English and French natively, and the Premium tier at 8 900 USD includes a bilingual FR/EN site.
Can you connect our admissions software or parent app?
Yes: from Growth at 4 900 USD, Kolonell links or embeds the tool the school has chosen. A custom parent portal is an application quoted on request.
When should we start for the August intake?
The build takes 3 to 4 weeks, but many families decide between January and April. Starting in December leaves 2 months of margin for copy, translations and photos; for a January intake, aim for September.
Do you come to the campus?
No: Kolonell holds no in-person meetings and does no filming. Google Meet calls take place between 3 pm and 6 pm Kuala Lumpur time, with a written update every week.
Let's scope your project. Send us your year groups, your intakes, your admissions software and your languages, and we will come back with a fixed-price tier delivered in 3 to 4 weeks. Request your free quote or see the international offer.
