The verdict in three sentences
An orthopaedics and sports medicine clinic in Utrecht usually serves two audiences at once: Dutch-speaking patients from the Binnenstad and Leidsche Rijn, and English-speaking students, researchers and staff around the Utrecht Science Park. A redesign succeeds when the Dutch and English patient journeys mirror each other page for page, with hreflang, a clean 301 map and forms that collect only what booking needs. Kolonell rebuilds the public site on a fixed grid (Starter EUR 2,700, Growth EUR 4,500, Premium EUR 8,200) in 3 to 4 weeks once content is ready, with booking and patient tools kept on quote.
When is a redesign worth it for a Utrecht clinic?
A redesign pays off when the current site creates friction for patients or risk for the clinic. In Utrecht, the most frequent triggers we see in briefs are:
- The English version stops halfway: the knee or shoulder treatment pages exist in Dutch only, and the English visitor is sent to a Dutch booking form.
- Google shows the Dutch page to English searchers and the reverse, because hreflang was never set.
- Practitioner pages lack BIG registration details, or list physiotherapists and sports physicians without clear roles.
- Contact forms ask patients to describe their injury in free text, which brings health data, a special category under the GDPR (AVG in Dutch), into an ordinary inbox.
- The CMS is so dated that adding a new sports physician takes a developer.
If two or more apply, a targeted redesign is cheaper than another round of patches.
What budget should you plan in 2026?
The ranges are a 2026 ballpark based on typical agency quotes and public agency rate pages in the Netherlands, not a survey.
| Provider | Ballpark 2026 | Usually included | Often billed on top |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelance developer | EUR 2,500 to 7,000 | Theme, page migration | Copywriting, English version, SEO migration |
| Small Utrecht studio | EUR 8,000 to 18,000 | Custom design, CMS, Dutch copy | English translation, redirect audit |
| Healthcare-focused Dutch agency | EUR 18,000 to 40,000 | UX research, bilingual build, accessibility audit | Booking integration, photography |
| Kolonell Starter | EUR 2,700 | Core pages, one language, 3 months of support | Integrations on quote |
| Kolonell Growth | EUR 4,500 | Treatment library, blog, analytics | Integrations on quote |
| Kolonell Premium | EUR 8,200 | Premium (the multilingual tier, languages set in the quote) | Integrations on quote |
Every Kolonell tier includes a project manager reachable in your time zone, native English copywriting, delivery in 3 to 4 weeks once content is ready and 3 months of support. Maintenance afterwards is on quote. Online booking, patient portal, video consultation and practice management links stay on quote: we embed or link to your existing vendor rather than rebuild it. See the international websites offer for the full scope of each tier.
How do you keep the Dutch and English patient journeys aligned?
The multilingual journey is where most Utrecht clinic sites break. Map it step by step before any design work.
| Patient step | Dutch page | English page | Typical failure | Fix in the redesign |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Search for a complaint | /knieblessures | /en/knee-injuries | English page missing, Dutch page served | One English page per Dutch page, hreflang nl and en plus x-default |
| Read about a treatment | Treatment page | Translated treatment page | Different facts in each language | Same clinician-reviewed source, translated afterwards |
| Check the practitioner | Profile with BIG number | Same profile in English | Registration only in Dutch | Registration details shown identically in both |
| Referral and insurance info | Verwijzing page | Referral page | Dutch insurance terms untranslated | Short glossary for international patients |
| Request an appointment | Form or booking embed | Same embed, English interface | English link opens Dutch form | Language parameter passed to the booking vendor |
| Confirmation | Thank you page | Thank you page | No English confirmation | Matched pages, no health data in the URL |
Two technical rules matter. Each language version needs its own URL and a self-referencing canonical, and hreflang must be reciprocal: if the Dutch page points to the English one, the English one must point back. Search Console then shows whether Google respects the pairing.
Which risks should you contain before go-live?
- SEO loss on ranking pages. Export all URLs from Search Console and the CMS, flag the treatment pages that bring visits, and write a one-to-one 301 map tested on staging.
- Health data in forms. Limit public forms to name, contact details and preferred slot. Clinical detail belongs in your booking or patient system.
- Tracking tags. Review every analytics and advertising tag on appointment and treatment pages with your privacy adviser before launch. The Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens has published guidance on cookies and tracking; follow your adviser's reading of it.
- Marketing claims. Sports medicine pages invite promises about recovery time. Keep them factual and reviewed by a clinician, with no guaranteed outcomes and no testimonials unless your adviser confirms they are acceptable. This is not legal advice.
- Accessibility. Build to WCAG 2.2 AA: injured or older patients often browse on a phone, one-handed, with limited mobility.
- Downtime. Launch on a quiet evening, keep the old site on standby for 48 hours and test the booking embed in both languages.
A realistic plan: URL inventory 3 to 5 days, clinician review and Dutch content 1 to 3 weeks on the clinic side, Kolonell design and build 2 to 3 weeks on staging, compliance read 3 to 5 days, then one week of daily monitoring after launch.
Questions to ask, and when a Utrecht agency is the better choice
Ask each provider: who writes or checks the Dutch version? How is hreflang implemented and tested? Will the booking embed open in the right language? Who reviews tags with our privacy adviser? Who owns the domain and CMS accounts?

A Utrecht or Dutch healthcare agency fits better if you want Dutch copywriting produced in-house by the same team, regular on-site sessions with your staff, or a deep integration with a Dutch practice management system included in one contract. A remote studio fits when English copy and the public site are the core of the job and your Dutch content already exists or comes from a translator.
Mini case study
Illustrative example, fictional clinic. Sanne, practice manager of "Vecht & Velo Sports Clinic" (invented name) near the Utrecht Science Park, runs four sports physicians and six physiotherapists. The site has 90 URLs, 30 of them treatment pages, only 12 translated.
- Kolonell Premium (the multilingual tier, languages set in the quote: Dutch and English): EUR 8,200.
- Independent Dutch translator for the 18 missing pages and updates, third-party cost: about 18,000 words at EUR 0.12, so EUR 2,160.
- Redirect map: 90 URLs, 60 unchanged, 30 redirected to the new treatment library, plus 30 new English URLs.
- Total: EUR 10,360, against a quote of around EUR 18,000 from a local studio for a comparable bilingual scope, a difference of EUR 7,640.
The booking vendor stays in place, with a language parameter added to its embed.
FAQ
Do we need separate URLs for Dutch and English?
Yes. One URL per language with reciprocal hreflang is the reliable setup. On a 30-page treatment library that means 60 URLs to map and test.
Can Kolonell write the Dutch copy?
Our native copywriting covers English and French. Dutch text comes from your team or an independent translator, a third-party cost often around EUR 0.10 to 0.15 per word.
Which tier suits a bilingual clinic?
Premium at EUR 8,200 is the multilingual tier, with languages set in the quote. Growth at EUR 4,500 suits a clinic that publishes in one language only.
Will you rebuild our booking tool?
No. Booking, patient portal and video consultation stay on quote and are usually embedded from the current vendor, which keeps patient data where it already is.
How long until the new site is live?
Kolonell needs 3 to 4 weeks once content is ready. Count 1 to 3 extra weeks if clinician review and translation start late.
