Polygon zkEVM and AggLayer: 2026

Websites

Polygon deeply restructured its stack in 2024-2026: progressive abandonment of Polygon PoS in favor of zkEVM (Type 2 ZK-rollup) and AggLayer, a cross-chain aggregation layer that unifies liquidity and UX across all connected chains.

TL;DR

- Polygon zkEVM: ZK-rollup Type 2, EVM-equivalent.

- AggLayer: aggregates multiple chains into single UX.

- MATIC → POL migration: unified multi-chain token.

- "AggLayer-aligned" roadmap for builders.

Type 2 zkEVM explained

Vitalik classified zkEVMs into 5 types by EVM compatibility:

  • Type 1: Total EVM-equivalent (Ethereum itself in ZK, slow)
  • Type 2: EVM-equivalent (Polygon zkEVM, Scroll, Linea)
  • Type 2.5: EVM-equivalent with some gas costs adjusted
  • Type 3: EVM-compatible but some precompiles missing
  • Type 4: compiles Solidity to custom IR (zkSync Era, StarkNet via Warp)

Type 2 = Solidity bytecode identical to L1, tools unchanged, but proof cost higher than Type 4. Polygon zkEVM, Scroll and Linea are Type 2.

AggLayer — the 2024+ innovation

AggLayer is a cross-chain coordination layer enabling:

  • Unified bridge between AggLayer-aligned chains (no pair-wise bridge)
  • Atomic composability: multi-chain transactions in one commit
  • Shared liquidity (not fragmented per chain)
  • Common security via aggregated ZK proofs

It's a response to the L2 fragmentation problem where each chain had its own bridge and liquidity.

2026 AggLayer members

  • Polygon zkEVM — flagship chain
  • Polygon PoS — migrating to AggLayer
  • Astar Network — ex-Substrate, migrated
  • X Layer — OKX
  • GPT Protocol — AI chain

POL token

POL replaced MATIC in 2024. Unified token for staking, gas and governance across all Polygon chains. MATIC → POL migration free via official contract.

Comparison with Optimism Superchain

Optimism Superchain and Polygon AggLayer have similar goals (network of interoperable L2s) but different approaches:

  • Optimism: Unified OP Stack + Law of Chains, optimistic rollups
  • Polygon: AggLayer as layer above, ZK-rollups and others

FAQ

Q: Will Polygon PoS disappear?

A: Long term transition to AggLayer + zkEVM. Short term PoS still heavily used (gaming, NFT, ~1B$ TVL).

Q: POL utility different from MATIC?

A: POL = multi-chain, hyperproductive staking (one validator can secure multiple Polygon chains). MATIC = mono-chain.

Conclusion

2026 Polygon became an AggLayer ecosystem rather than a single chain. For a builder, the Polygon choice is less "which chain" and more "AggLayer gives me access to an ecosystem of interconnected chains". Relevant for cross-chain composability and shared liquidity.
