The verdict in three sentences
A Ghanaian online store should pick a payment aggregator on total cost, not the headline rate. Paystack charges roughly 1.5 % + GHS 0.10 on local cards (capped at GHS 100), Flutterwave around 1.4 % on MoMo, and Stripe about 3.9 % but international cards only — a different job entirely. The right call depends on your MoMo-vs-card mix and payout cycle: for domestic MoMo-heavy sales Flutterwave or Paystack win, while Stripe only earns its rate on diaspora card payments.
Local vs international rails: real fees
Each processor prices a different job. Paystack and Flutterwave own the domestic MoMo and local-card rails; Stripe covers international cards your local providers can't. 2026 orders of magnitude in Accra.
| Item | Paystack | Flutterwave | Stripe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local card | 1.5 % + GHS 0.10 (cap GHS 100) | ~1.4 % | Not available |
| Mobile Money | ~1.5 % | ~1.4 % | Not available |
| International card | 3.9 % + GHS 0.10 | ~3.8 % | 3.9 % + fixed |
| Payout cycle | T+1 | T+1 – T+2 | T+2 – T+7 |
| Setup fee | Free | Free | Free |
| Dashboard / API | Included | Included | Included |
| Refund fee | Free | Free | Fee retained |
The GHS 100 cap on Paystack local cards is decisive for large baskets: above ~GHS 6,600 the fee stops growing, making it near-free proportionally. Stripe never touches domestic MoMo, so comparing its 3.9 % to a 1.4 % MoMo rate is comparing apples to oranges.
Cost for 1,000 orders by mix
The real trade-off is your MoMo/card split and average basket. Here is the estimated monthly cost for 1,000 orders at GHS 500 (turnover GHS 500,000), 2026 order of magnitude.
| Scenario | Effective rate | Fixed (1,000 × GHS 0.10) | Total monthly cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 % MoMo via Flutterwave (1.4 %) | GHS 7,000 | GHS 0 | GHS 7,000 |
| 100 % local card via Paystack (1.5 %) | GHS 7,500 | GHS 100 | GHS 7,600 |
| Mix 80 % MoMo / 20 % intl card | GHS 12,600 | GHS 100 | GHS 12,700 |
| Domestic + Stripe for diaspora only | GHS 8,200 | GHS 60 | GHS 8,260 |
International card at ~3.9 % is where cost explodes: keep it strictly for diaspora buyers who have no other option. For domestic MoMo, Flutterwave and Paystack sit within a rounding error of each other — pick on payout speed and dashboard fit.
Mini case study
Ama runs an online cosmetics shop in Accra: 900 orders/month, average basket GHS 550, i.e. GHS 495,000. All-in on international-card rails at 3.9 % she would pay GHS 19,305/month. Routing 75 % of payments through Flutterwave MoMo at 1.4 %, she pays GHS 5,197 on that share, plus GHS 4,826 on the 25 % via local card at 1.5 %, totalling about GHS 10,023. Saving: roughly GHS 9,282/month, over GHS 111,000/year. The cost of switching: a few days wiring the correct rails per payment method.

FAQ
Is an aggregator always more expensive than direct?
On rate, usually — but Paystack and Flutterwave are the aggregators for local rails, so the real question is which one and which mix. Stripe is only cheaper conceptually when you genuinely need international cards.
When should I add Stripe?
Only when a meaningful share of buyers pay with non-African international cards that Paystack/Flutterwave can't process well. For pure domestic MoMo, Stripe's 3.9 % is simply the wrong tool.
Does the GHS 0.10 fixed fee matter?
On small baskets, yes. On a GHS 20 ticket it adds 0.5 %; on a GHS 500 basket it is negligible. Low average baskets favour a percentage-only structure.
Paystack or Flutterwave for MoMo?
They sit within a rounding error on rate. Decide on payout speed (both around T+1), dashboard usability, reconciliation exports and local support quality.
How long to integrate an aggregator?
With a ready API key, a standard site takes a few days. Add time to test MoMo callbacks and card 3-D Secure flows before going live.
