The verdict in three sentences
For a Dublin SME taking 600,000 EUR a year online, the gap between payment providers comes down to three lines: the fee (1.2 to 1.9% plus 0.25 EUR per transaction as a 2026 ballpark), the payout delay (2 to 7 days) and dispute fees (15 to 20 EUR per chargeback). Stripe wins on speed of integration, Adyen on acceptance rates and interchange++ pricing for growing volumes, Worldpay on negotiated rates through an acquiring relationship. A well-prepared renegotiation or switch saves 2,000 to 5,000 EUR a year, without hurting your conversion rate.
Fee comparison in 2026
Public price lists change and can be negotiated above a few hundred thousand euros processed. The figures below are 2026 ballparks for European cards, to be confirmed by quote.
| Criterion (2026 estimate) | Stripe | Adyen | Worldpay |
|---|---|---|---|
| European card fee | 1.5% + 0.25 EUR | interchange++ (about 1.0 to 1.4% all-in) + 0.11 EUR | 1.2 to 1.7% + 0.10 to 0.25 EUR |
| Non-European cards | 3.25% + 0.25 EUR | interchange++ (2 to 3% all-in) | quote-based |
| Monthly fee | 0 EUR | minimum invoice often 1,000 EUR | 15 to 50 EUR |
| Payout delay | 2 to 7 days | 1 to 3 days | 1 to 3 days |
| Dispute fee | 20 EUR | 15 to 20 EUR | 15 to 20 EUR |
| Negotiation possible | from about 1 M EUR | built into interchange++ | through the acquiring contract |
| Developer integration | excellent | very good | fair |
Real cost depends on basket size. With a 120 EUR basket, the 0.25 EUR fixed fee weighs only 0.2%; with a 25 EUR basket, it rises to 1%. A B2B SME with large baskets should negotiate the percentage; one with small baskets should negotiate the fixed part. Note that Adyen's minimum monthly invoice makes it a better fit above roughly 1 M EUR a year.
Beyond fees: payouts, 3D Secure and risk
The cheapest provider on paper can cost more if its acceptance rate is low or its dispute handling is slow. Three indicators deserve monthly tracking.
| Indicator | Good 2026 level | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Payment acceptance rate | 92 to 96% | below 88% |
| Drop-off at 3D Secure | 3 to 6% | over 10% |
| Dispute rate | below 0.3% | over 0.7% |
| Average payout delay | 2 days | over 5 days |
| Funds held in reserve | 0% | over 10% of volume |
| B2B payments by SEPA transfer or direct debit | available | cards only |
For a B2B SME, offering SEPA transfer or direct debit alongside cards sharply cuts fees on large amounts: a direct debit often costs 0.35 to 0.80 EUR regardless of the amount.
Mini case study
Hypothetical example: Ciara, managing director of a healthcare equipment SME in Dublin, takes 600,000 EUR a year with a 150 EUR average basket, or 4,000 transactions. With her current provider at 1.9% plus 0.25 EUR, she pays 11,400 EUR plus 1,000 EUR, or 12,400 EUR a year.
Moving to 1.4% plus 0.25 EUR after negotiation, and shifting 30% of volume (her clinic customers) to SEPA direct debit at 0.50 EUR, she pays 5,880 EUR in card fees, 700 EUR in fixed card fees and 400 EUR in direct debits, or 6,980 EUR. The saving reaches 5,420 EUR a year, for an integration cost of about 1,500 to 3,000 EUR.

FAQ
Should we switch provider or just renegotiate?
Start by renegotiating with a costed competing offer in hand: above 500,000 EUR processed per year, a cut of 0.2 to 0.4 points is often achieved. Switching makes sense if acceptance rates or payout delays are a problem.
How much does integrating a new provider cost?
On an existing site with an official plugin, allow 1 to 3 days of work, or 800 to 3,000 EUR. On a custom platform with subscriptions and refunds, more like 3,000 to 8,000 EUR.
Does 3D Secure reduce sales?
It adds a step, with 3 to 6% drop-off on average. Exemptions for low amounts and returning customers limit friction while shifting fraud liability to the bank.
Can we use two providers at the same time?
Yes, many SMEs keep a main provider and a backup. It costs an extra 10 to 40 EUR a month and protects against an outage or a funds freeze.
Are Wave and Orange Money useful for an Irish SME?
Only if you sell to customers in West Africa or the diaspora. In that case, they can account for 10 to 30% of those customers' payments.
