Online shop course for women food processors in Dakar: hibiscus, cereals and juices

Digital Marketing

The verdict in three sentences

A woman food processor or women's cooperative (GIE) in Dakar selling hibiscus juice (bissap), thiakry, cereals and juices only at fairs and on WhatsApp quickly hits a ceiling: a stand costs 50,000 to 150,000 FCFA for a few days, and WhatsApp orders get lost in the chat. An online shop with a catalogue, mobile money payment and delivery zones lets you sell all year, including to the diaspora and to offices in the Plateau. The Kolonell Academy Online store course, taught in French, costs 75,000 FCFA (about 115 EUR) for 20 hours, payable with Wave or Orange Money, and teaches you to build and run one without being a developer.

Fair, WhatsApp or online shop: the real costs

Fairs (FIDAK, neighbourhood fairs, Christmas and Tabaski markets) remain good selling moments. But they last only a few days, and the rest of the year orders arrive on WhatsApp with no catalogue or tracking. An online shop does not replace the stand: it takes over between fairs.

Sales channel (2026 order of magnitude, Dakar)CostStrengthsLimits
Fair stand50,000 to 150,000 FCFA per eventTastings, direct contactA few days a year, stock to carry

Delivery within Dakar1,000 to 2,500 FCFA per orderCustomer receives at homeMust be built into prices or shipping fees

For processed food products, a few rules matter: clear photos of each format (1-litre bottle, 500 g bag of thiakry, jar of jam), the best-before date, the ingredients and a clear delivery zone. The shop's legal pages must also comply with Senegal's data protection law 2008-12, which the course covers.

What the course has you build

The course has 6 modules, 20 hours and 96 corrected exercises, with a practical workshop, a PDF handout and a quiz per module. Two projects are graded: your pre-launch shop with 20 products, then your live shop with its first orders.

ModuleWhat you doExample for a food processor

It is an intermediate level, level 3 of the E-commerce and online selling track. If you have never sold online, level 2, "E-commerce: selling online in Senegal", lays the groundwork. The full 5-level track costs 350,000 FCFA instead of 450,000.

How much a cooperative can sell online

A well-run small online shop in West Africa commonly reaches 20 to 60 orders a month after 3 to 6 months, or 400,000 to 2,000,000 FCFA in revenue depending on the average basket. For local products at 1,500 to 5,000 FCFA a unit, the basket depends mostly on bundles.

These are 2026 estimates for Dakar, to be adapted to your recipes and suppliers. No result is guaranteed: revenue depends on product quality, photos and consistency.

Mini case study

Learn this skill with Kolonell Academy

Short, practical online courses (taught in French), graded exercises, certificate. Pay with Wave or Orange Money.

Adama, 38, president of an 8-woman cooperative in Grand Yoff. The group currently sells at fairs and on WhatsApp, paying for two stands a year at 100,000 FCFA each.

  • Investment: 75,000 FCFA course, plus a 20,000 FCFA monthly platform subscription.
  • After 4 months, the shop gets 30 orders a month with a 9,000 FCFA average basket, so 270,000 FCFA in sales.
  • Gross margin of about 45%: 121,500 FCFA. Minus the 20,000 FCFA subscription, about 101,500 FCFA a month remains, with delivery charged to the customer.
  • At that level, the course pays back in less than one month of sales.

If the shop only gets 10 orders a month, monthly margin drops to about 20,500 FCFA after the subscription, and payback takes nearly 4 months. That is why the module on attracting visitors matters.

FAQ

Do I need to code to build the shop?

No, the course relies on platforms such as Shopify, WooCommerce or Wix, which you configure without code. You do need to be comfortable with a smartphone or computer and set aside the 20 hours of work.

How do customers pay on the shop?

Module 4 shows you how to connect mobile money, such as Wave and Orange Money, and cash on delivery. Card payment can be added for the diaspora depending on the platform you choose.

How much does the shop cost each month?

Usually 15,000 to 25,000 FCFA a month for the platform subscription, plus the domain name and delivery, charged 1,000 to 2,500 FCFA per order within Dakar. Module 1 has you calculate this cost over 12 months.

Can several cooperative members take the course?

Enrolment is individual, at 75,000 FCFA. In practice, one or two members take the course and then train the others in the weekly routine from module 6.

Can I sell to the diaspora in France or the United States?

An online shop is visible everywhere, and the diaspora often orders for family in Dakar with local delivery. Shipping food products abroad involves health and customs rules you should check before starting.
