The verdict in three sentences
For an NGO with several funders, the website is no longer a brochure: it is the accountability tool that reassures USAID, AFD, the European Union, FCDO or a private foundation. Budget 4,000,000 to 8,500,000 FCFA excl. VAT (about 6,100 to 13,000 EUR) for a bilingual site with a project map, a report library and a named-access funder space, then 100,000 to 200,000 FCFA (150 to 305 EUR) per month for maintenance and hosting. The good news: this budget can be written into your next grant application as a "communication and visibility" line.
What funders actually expect in 2026
Major funders have tightened their visibility requirements. The European Union enforces its communication and visibility rules, AFD and FCDO expect public reporting of results, and most foundations want to check interim reports without waiting for an email. A director handling six funders spends on average 6 to 10 hours per month resending PDFs, answering data requests and checking which version was shared with whom. This is true for an NGO headquartered in Dakar and for a London-based charity running programmes in West Africa.
A well-designed funder space solves this: each funder gets a named login, only sees the projects it funds, downloads narrative and financial reports, and every access is logged. On the public side, the project map displays intervention regions (Kolda, Matam, Kaffrine…), key indicators and partner logos in line with the required brand guidelines.
| Feature | Role for funders | Indicative 2026 budget (excl. VAT) |
|---|---|---|
| Bilingual FR/EN website (12 to 20 pages) | Presentation, governance, team, transparency | 1,800,000 to 3,000,000 FCFA |
| Interactive project map | Location, indicators, funder per project | 600,000 to 1,300,000 FCFA |
| Public report library | Annual reports, audits, evaluations | 400,000 to 800,000 FCFA |
| Named-access funder space | Per-project access, access log | 900,000 to 2,200,000 FCFA |
| Online donations (Wave, Orange Money, card) | Diaspora and individual giving | 500,000 to 900,000 FCFA |
| Editorial back office with approval | Publishing controlled by management | 300,000 to 600,000 FCFA |
| Full project total | 4,000,000 to 8,500,000 FCFA |
Agency, "tech for good" offer or free tool: the real comparison
Many NGOs start with a WordPress site set up by a volunteer or a discounted "tech for good" offer. These options help in the short term, but they often fail on two points: security of confidential documents and continuity when the volunteer leaves. A poorly protected financial report indexed by Google can cost you a funder relationship.
| Option | Initial cost (2026 order of magnitude) | Annual cost | Secure funder space | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volunteer WordPress + free theme | 0 to 500,000 FCFA | 150,000 FCFA hosting | No, or fragile plugin | Abandonment, unpatched flaws |
| No-code platform (Wix, Squarespace) | 300,000 FCFA setup | 250,000 to 450,000 FCFA | Pages behind a single shared password | No named tracking |
| Subsidised "tech for good" offer | 1,000,000 to 2,500,000 FCFA | Variable | Partial | Long delays, fixed scope |
| Local custom agency (Kolonell) | 4,000,000 to 8,500,000 FCFA | 1,200,000 to 2,400,000 FCFA | Yes, per project and logged | Budget must be planned in the grant |
| International agency (London) | 15,000,000 to 35,000,000 FCFA (25,000 to 50,000 GBP) | 3,000,000 FCFA and more | Yes | Disproportionate cost |
Custom development makes sense as soon as you have at least three funders and documents that must not be public. Below that, a simple bilingual site around 2,000,000 FCFA is enough.
Writing the website into the grant application
Most funders accept a "communication, visibility and accountability" line representing 2 to 5% of a project's total budget. On a 300,000,000 FCFA three-year programme, that is 6,000,000 to 15,000,000 FCFA: enough to fund the website, its maintenance over the project's lifetime and part of the content (field photos, testimonial videos). Word the line in terms of outcomes: "public results reporting platform and secure document space for partners", with a detailed quote attached.

Aïssatou, director of a maternal health NGO in Dakar, manages 6 funders and 11 projects. Her team spends 8 hours a month sending reports, valued at 15,000 FCFA per hour, i.e. 1,440,000 FCFA per year. She orders a 6,200,000 FCFA site excl. VAT with a funder space and a Wave donation module, plus 150,000 FCFA a month of maintenance. The project is 80% funded by the visibility line of a new EU programme: remaining cost 1,240,000 FCFA, plus 1,800,000 FCFA a year of maintenance. Online diaspora donations, estimated at 2,500,000 FCFA in year one, cover the maintenance and free up those 8 monthly hours for field work.
FAQ
How long does it take to deliver an NGO website with a funder space?
Allow 8 to 12 weeks, including 3 weeks of content gathering on the NGO side. The timeline mainly depends on the availability of approved reports and field photos.
Can funders see only their own projects?
Yes, each account is linked to one or more projects and only sees the matching documents. Every download is timestamped, which proves that a report was made available on a given date.
Can we accept donations through Wave and Orange Money?
Yes, a donation module accepts Wave, Orange Money and bank cards, with an automatic receipt. Fees are around 1% on Wave and 1.5 to 3% on cards depending on the provider.
Is the site compliant with data protection law?
It is designed for Senegal's Law 2008-12 and the GDPR: consent, processing register, documented hosting. A filing with Senegal's CDP takes 2 to 4 weeks.
What does maintenance at 100,000 to 200,000 FCFA per month cover?
Hosting, daily backups, security updates, new funder accounts and 2 to 4 hours of changes per month. The upper range includes uptime monitoring and priority support.
