The verdict in three sentences
A split payment collects the whole basket in one transaction then automatically allocates the amount to each vendor, minus the platform take-rate (10 to 20 %). The buyer sees a single charge, but your marketplace creates several settlement lines, each rounded to the whole naira. Without split automation, every mixed-vendor order becomes a manual operation that erodes margin and vendor trust.
How split payments work on a multi-vendor basket
The rule is simple: collect first, allocate second. The customer pays the basket total; the platform keeps its fee and pushes the rest to each vendor. Two models coexist in 2026: instant split (each vendor credited on collection, native to Paystack Split Payments) and settlement split (allocation at the weekly payout). Paystack subaccounts let you attach a percentage or flat share per vendor so the gateway itself performs the split at charge time.
The tricky part is rounding. A 12 % fee on NGN 13,900 is NGN 1,668; the vendor keeps NGN 12,232. Since card settlement works in kobo but payouts land in whole naira, everything must resolve cleanly. The Kolonell rule: round the platform fee down and leave the residual to the vendor, never the other way around — a vendor should never lose a naira to rounding.
| Split model | Vendor credit | Advantage | Risk to manage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instant (subaccount) | On charge | Fast vendor cash flow | Refund = fund clawback |
| Settlement (weekly) | At payout | Simple reconciliation | Vendor waits for cash |
| Hybrid | Reserved then paid | Balances cash/risk | More complex logic |
Allocation table: an NGN 42,000 basket
Take a real basket split across three vendors, with a 12 % platform take-rate and Paystack charges of about 1.5 % (capped at NGN 2,000) borne by the platform (2026 order of magnitude).
| Vendor | Sub-total | Fee 12 % | Net to vendor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vendor A (fashion) | NGN 18,000 | NGN 2,160 | NGN 15,840 |
| Vendor B (cosmetics) | NGN 15,500 | NGN 1,860 | NGN 13,640 |
| Vendor C (accessories) | NGN 8,500 | NGN 1,020 | NGN 7,480 |
| Total | NGN 42,000 | NGN 5,040 | NGN 36,960 |
The platform collects NGN 42,000, keeps NGN 5,040 in fees, absorbs roughly NGN 630 in Paystack charges and settles NGN 36,960 across three subaccounts. Net platform margin on this order: about NGN 4,410.

A partial refund is the real test of a split engine. If vendor B refunds a NGN 4,000 item, you must claw back NGN 3,520 (net) from the vendor and NGN 480 from platform fees, then return NGN 4,000 to the customer. With instant split, if the vendor already withdrew funds, the platform fronts the refund and deducts it from the next payout. This is why many Lagos marketplaces prefer settlement split: you never release a naira before the return window closes.
Mini case study
Chidi runs a fashion marketplace in Lagos with 18 active vendors. He handles 320 orders a month, 40 % of them mixed (2+ vendors). Average basket: NGN 24,000. Monthly volume: NGN 7,680,000. At a 12 % take-rate, he earns NGN 921,600 in platform revenue. By automating split and payouts, he moves from 6 hours of manual allocation per week to zero, and his payout error rate drops from 3 % to under 0.2 %. Time saved, valued: about NGN 96,000/month.
FAQ
Does the customer see they are paying several vendors? No. They make a single card charge for the total. The allocation is invisible to the buyer; it happens through your subaccount configuration and back office.
How do I handle transaction charges? You choose who bears them. The healthiest 2026 practice: the platform absorbs the ~1.5 % Paystack charge and bakes it into its take-rate, so the vendor's promised net is never reduced.
What if a vendor must be refunded after payout? The platform fronts the customer refund and deducts it from the vendor's next weekly payout. A negative vendor balance carries forward until cleared.
Does split work with bank transfers too? Yes. Paystack subaccounts support card and bank-transfer collection; the same percentage allocation applies regardless of the buyer's payment channel.
Can I set a different fee per vendor? Yes. The take-rate is configured per subaccount or per category (say 10 % on electronics, 15 % on fashion) and the engine applies the right calculation per basket line.
