The verdict in three sentences
For a Rotterdam food supplements brand selling direct to consumers and through pharmacies and drugstores, a solid store maintenance contract costs 400 to 2,000 EUR a month excluding VAT as a 2026 market ballpark. The price gap comes down to response time, included development hours and whether the agency runs health claim checks on Dutch and English product pages. A contract without numbered response times and included hours protects neither revenue nor compliance.
What the contract must cover
A bilingual supplements store gathers moving parts quickly: a pharmacy reseller area with its own price list, subscriptions for consumers, iDEAL and card payments, PostNL or DHL connectors, and translations that must stay aligned. Every platform or plugin update can break one of them. The contract must state who tests, when, and how fast fixes happen.
| Clause | Essential | Enhanced | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly fee (2026 market ballpark, excl. VAT) | 400 to 700 EUR | 800 to 1,300 EUR | 1,400 to 2,000 EUR |
| Security and plugin updates | monthly | monthly, tested on staging | monthly, staging plus automated tests |
| Response time, blocking incident | 24 business hours | 4 business hours | 2 hours, 7 days a week |
| Backups | daily, kept 30 days | daily, 30 days, quarterly restore test | daily, 30 days, monthly restore test |
| Included development | 4 hours a month | 8 hours a month | 12 hours a month |
| Health claim checks | not included | new pages reviewed | every edited page reviewed |
| Language sync Dutch and English | on request | both versions checked at each change | automated missing translation alerts |
Health claims and the pharmacy channel
In the EU, supplements may only carry health claims authorised under Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 and listed in the EU Register of nutrition and health claims; in the Netherlands, the Keuringsraad also reviews public advertising for health products under its own code. A product page edited in a hurry for a promotion, or a translation that strengthens a claim, can slip through. The agency is not your regulatory team, but the contract can require a consistency check: compare every edited text in both languages against an approved claims list and hold publication when it differs. Budget 1 to 3 hours a month for this.
The pharmacy reseller area needs its own service level: if pharmacists cannot log in to reorder, you lose wholesale volume that rarely shows up in consumer analytics.
Severity levels and out of scope costs
| Severity | Example | Response time (market) | Billing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blocking | checkout down, store offline | 2 to 4 hours by tier | included |
| Major | pharmacy area unavailable, subscriptions failing | 4 to 8 hours | included |
| Minor | wrong display on one product page | 24 to 72 hours | included |
| Enhancement | new plugin, new range page | scheduled | included hours, then 80 to 120 EUR per hour |
| Major platform upgrade | new core version | separate project | 2,500 to 9,000 EUR |
Insist on reversibility: full admin access, code and database handed over within 5 business days at the end of the contract, with no exit fee. Also sign a GDPR data processing agreement covering customer and pharmacy account data.
As a nearshore benchmark, Kolonell's maintenance prices are 53 EUR a month (Basic), 114 EUR (Standard) and 183 EUR (Premium), or 35,000, 75,000 and 120,000 FCFA, with scope confirmed after reviewing the store.

Illustrative example, fictional company: Femke, e-commerce director of a Rotterdam supplements brand, sells 2.4 million EUR a year online, about 6,600 EUR a day. Her current 500 EUR contract promises a 24 hour response. Last year, 3 blocking incidents took the store down for 18 hours in total, costing about 4,950 EUR in lost sales, and 12 out of scope hours cost 1,200 EUR. The enhanced tier at 1,000 EUR a month costs 6,000 EUR more per year. With a 4 hour response, losses would drop to around 1,100 EUR and the extra hours would be included, so the net extra cost is roughly 950 EUR a year for staging tests and claim checks in two languages.
FAQ
Which tier suits a supplements store?
Above roughly 600,000 EUR of yearly online sales, the enhanced tier usually pays for itself. Below that, the essential tier works if the store runs fewer than 20 plugins.
Do unused hours roll over?
That is negotiable, and many agencies accept a 1 to 3 month rollover. Get it in writing or the hours are lost.
Who is liable for an unauthorised claim?
The store operator remains responsible for its product pages. The agency can run a consistency check, usually 1 to 3 hours a month, but not legal sign off.
How long should backups be kept?
Thirty days covers most incidents. Add a monthly copy kept 12 months if subscriptions or pharmacy prices change often.
Should major upgrades be in the monthly fee?
Rarely, since they are projects of 2,500 to 9,000 EUR. The contract should still include a yearly plugin compatibility audit.
