The verdict in three sentences
A Series A startup in Zug rebranding after a pivot is buying two different things: a new positioning and a website that carries it without breaking what already ranks and gets linked. For the positioning, a Zug or Zurich agency you can sit with every week is often worth the premium; for the build, a remote studio working from an approved brand is usually faster and far cheaper. The smartest setup for many teams is a split: brand strategy close to home, site delivery remote, with code, domain and accounts in the company's name throughout.
Why is a post-pivot rebrand different from a first website?
Crypto Valley, described broadly, spans blockchain infrastructure, digital asset services, fintech and commodity trading tech, with Zurich under half an hour away by train. German is the local language, but English is the working language in most startups here, and the investor, partner and hiring audiences are international. After a pivot, your site already has history: press articles linking to old product pages, search rankings on terms you no longer target, partner listings, maybe a token or consumer app page that must be retired carefully.
| Rebrand workstream | Why it matters after a pivot | Local agency | Remote studio (e.g. Kolonell) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Positioning and messaging | Investors and customers must understand the new model in one screen | Strong: weekly in-person workshops with founders and board | Good by video once the direction is set |
| Visual identity | Signals the break with the old product | Strong, usually the agency's core skill | Works from an approved identity |
| Redirect map for old URLs | Protects links from press and partners | Varies by agency | Included in the build plan |
| English and German copy | English for investors, German for Swiss institutional buyers | Native German, English varies | Native English included, German via a third-party native translator |
| Careers, investor and press pages | Series A hiring and fresh press kit | Standard | Standard |
| Developer docs and API reference | Needed if the new product is infrastructure | Often subcontracted | On quote |
| Launch speed | Rebrand often tied to an announcement date | 10 to 16 weeks typical | 3 to 4 weeks from approved brand |
Retainer or fixed scope: what does three years cost?
Zug and Zurich agencies commonly pair a rebrand with a monthly retainer. That is efficient if you ship campaigns every month and have no in-house designer; otherwise, it quietly becomes your largest marketing line. The figures below are 2026 ballparks drawn from typical agency quotes and public agency rate pages. Update hours are a market assumption (40 hours a year at CHF 160), not a Kolonell price.
| Model | Year 1 | Year 2 | Year 3 | 3-year total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local agency, brand and site CHF 45,000, retainer CHF 2,500 a month from month 4 | CHF 67,500 | CHF 30,000 | CHF 30,000 | CHF 127,500 |
| Local agency, brand and site CHF 45,000, ad hoc updates | CHF 51,400 | CHF 6,400 | CHF 6,400 | CHF 64,200 |
| Local freelancer, site CHF 15,000, ad hoc updates | CHF 21,400 | CHF 6,400 | CHF 6,400 | CHF 34,200 |
| Local brand studio CHF 20,000 plus Kolonell Premium CHF 8,200, ad hoc updates | CHF 34,600 | CHF 6,400 | CHF 6,400 | CHF 47,400 |
| Kolonell Growth CHF 4,500 on an in-house refreshed brand, ad hoc updates | CHF 10,900 | CHF 6,400 | CHF 6,400 | CHF 23,700 |
Kolonell's international grid runs Starter CHF 2,700, Growth CHF 4,500 and Premium CHF 8,200 (the multilingual tier, languages set in the quote). Every tier includes a project manager reachable in your time zone, native English or French copywriting, delivery in 3 to 4 weeks and 3 months of support; maintenance after that is on quote.
When should you keep everything local?
Be honest about where your risk sits. Keep the whole project with a Zug or Zurich agency if the pivot is still being argued at board level and you need a facilitator in the room every week, if the rebrand includes an event launch, video shoots and office signage, or if you want one accountable partner rather than two. Also stay local if Swiss German-speaking institutional buyers are your first market and every page must read natively in German from day one.
A remote studio, alone or in a split model, makes sense once the new positioning is signed off, when English is the primary language and the launch date is fixed. It also suits teams planning to hire an in-house brand designer within a year, since a fixed-scope build leaves no long retainer to unwind.
Questions to ask both providers before you sign:
- Will you deliver a full redirect map of old URLs and test it before switch-over?
- Are the domain, DNS, hosting, repository and analytics in our company's name today, and will they stay there?
- How will claims about digital assets or financial services be reviewed by our compliance lead before publication?
- How do you handle the privacy notice under the Swiss nLPD and GDPR consent for EU visitors?
- Which accessibility target (WCAG 2.1 AA or 2.2 AA) do you build and test to?
On the regulatory frame: the revised Federal Act on Data Protection (nLPD/revFADP) has applied since 1 September 2023, supervised by the FDPIC, and the GDPR is relevant whenever you target EU residents. Activities around digital assets may fall under FINMA supervision, so marketing copy should go through whoever owns compliance. This is not legal advice.

Mini case study
Illustrative example: Jonas leads marketing at a 28-person Series A startup in Zug that has moved from a consumer crypto wallet to tokenization infrastructure for asset managers. A Zurich agency quotes CHF 52,000 for brand and site together. He splits the work: a local brand studio delivers identity and messaging for CHF 18,000, Kolonell builds the English and German site on Premium at CHF 8,200 (the multilingual tier, languages set in the quote), and an independent native German reviewer adds CHF 2,000 as a third-party cost. Total: CHF 28,200, CHF 23,800 below the single-agency quote. The trade-off is coordination: Jonas becomes the bridge between two providers for about six weeks.
FAQ
Can we run the rebrand and the site in parallel?
Partly. Wireframes and the redirect map can start while the identity is finalised, but final design needs an approved brand; plan 3 to 4 weeks of build after sign-off.
How many old URLs should we expect to redirect?
Pivoted startups often carry 30 to 150 indexed URLs from the old product. Each one should map to the closest new page or a clear explanation page.
Is German mandatory for a Zug startup?
No, English works for most investors and international partners. If 20% or more of your pipeline is Swiss German-speaking institutions, native German pages are worth the third-party translation cost.
What do Zug agency retainers usually cost?
A 2026 ballpark is CHF 2,000 to 6,000 per month depending on hours and seniority. Compare that with a fixed build and occasional updates before committing for 12 months.
Who should own the brand files and code?
The company, at 100%, including source design files. Write it into both contracts so the brand studio and the site builder hand everything over.
