The verdict in three sentences
For most Lucerne firms of 2 to 10 lawyers serving English-speaking or international clients, a remote studio with a fixed grid (2 700 to 8 200 CHF at Kolonell) covers the need well, while a Lucerne or Zurich agency at 15 000 to 50 000 CHF earns its premium when the site must be German-first, with on-site portraits and face-to-face workshops. The decision comes down to three questions: which language your clients search in, whether you need someone in your meeting room, and who owns the domain and the code at the end. Settle those before comparing quotes and the choice usually makes itself.
What actually differs between a Lucerne agency and a remote studio?
Lucerne has a compact agency scene, and many firms also brief Zurich studios 45 minutes away by train. These agencies work German-first, know Central Switzerland well and will happily come to your office. A remote studio sells a defined scope at a fixed price and works over video calls. For a Lucerne firm advising expatriate families, holding companies or private clients from abroad in English, the difference matters less than it seems.
| Criterion | Lucerne / Zurich agency | Swiss freelancer | Kolonell (remote studio) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time-zone overlap | Same zone (CET) | Same zone | Team based in Dakar (GMT): 1 h behind in winter, 2 h in summer, shared working day |
| Meetings | On site at your office | On site or video | Video only, no on-site meetings |
| Languages | Native German, English often via translators | Mostly German | Native English or French copywriting, German not included |
| Price for a 10-page firm site | 15 000 to 50 000 CHF | 5 000 to 15 000 CHF | 2 700 / 4 500 / 8 200 CHF, fixed |
| Delivery | 8 to 16 weeks | 4 to 12 weeks depending on availability | 3 to 4 weeks |
| On-site photo and video | Offered or subcontracted | Sometimes | Not offered: book a local photographer |
| Support after launch | Often a paid maintenance contract | Case by case | 3 months included |
These ranges are a 2026 ballpark built from public Swiss agency price pages, minimum project sizes shown on Clutch.co profiles and day rates published by freelancers on Malt and similar platforms. They are not quotes.
When is a Lucerne agency the better choice?
To be straight about it, in several cases a Lucerne agency is the right answer.
- Your clients search in German. If most mandates come from cantonal SMEs and private individuals, the site should be conceived in German from day one. Kolonell writes in English or French, not German.
- You want portraits and a video shot in your office. Kolonell does no photo or video shoots.
- The partners want in-person workshops around a table before signing off the site structure.
- You are planning a budget above 30 000 CHF with a multi-year relationship and a contact ten minutes' walk away.
Conversely, the remote studio fits when the site is mainly English or French, partner photos already exist and the budget has to stay under control.
What does the 3-year budget look like?
To compare fairly, add what each option leaves out and apply the same hosting and maintenance hypothesis on every side.
| Item | Lucerne agency | Swiss freelancer | Kolonell Growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website build | 25 000 CHF (mid-range) | 9 000 CHF | 4 500 CHF |
| Partner portraits | Included (hypothesis) | 1 500 CHF | 1 500 CHF (local photographer) |
| German version of key pages | Included | 1 200 CHF | 1 200 CHF (external translator) |
| Hosting and maintenance, years 1 to 3 (same hypothesis: 1 800 CHF/year) | 5 400 CHF | 5 400 CHF | 5 400 CHF |
| 3-year total | 30 400 CHF | 17 100 CHF | 12 600 CHF |
At Kolonell the first 3 months of support are included and maintenance afterwards is quoted on request, hence the identical hypothesis in the table. Payment is by bank transfer, 50 % at kickoff and 50 % at delivery. Custom applications (client portal, booking with payment, integration with case-management software) are quoted on request. The three tiers are detailed on the international website offer.
What must a Lucerne law firm site do, and which rules apply?
Need a professional website?
Kolonell builds websites that attract clients, optimized for the Sénégalese market. Free quote in 2 minutes.
A good Lucerne firm site has one page per practice area (corporate, succession, employment, immigration), lawyer profiles showing admission to the cantonal register, a contact form that asks for a short summary without inviting confidential documents, and fast mobile display.
On compliance, the revised Federal Act on Data Protection (nFADP, or nLPD) has been in force since 1 September 2023: a clear privacy notice, a duty to inform when collecting data through forms, a contract with the host, transparency about analytics tools. If you target clients in the EU, the GDPR may also apply. Lawyer advertising is governed by article 12 of the Federal Act on the Free Movement of Lawyers (BGFA): it is allowed as long as it is objective and meets the public's need for information, under the cantonal supervisory authority. For accessibility, aim for WCAG 2.1 AA. This is not legal advice.
Which questions should you ask both types of provider?
- Who writes the copy, in which language, and does a lawyer from the firm review it?
- Is the domain registered in the firm's name?
- Do we receive the code and admin access at delivery?
- Where is the site hosted (Switzerland, EU) and is there a data processing agreement?
- What is included after launch, and for how long?
- Who is my project manager, and during which hours can I reach them?

Mini case study
Illustrative example. Andrea M., managing partner of a four-lawyer firm in Lucerne, advises English-speaking families settled in Central Switzerland on corporate and succession matters. A Zurich agency quotes 28 000 CHF. She picks Kolonell's Growth tier at 4 500 CHF in English instead, adds 1 800 CHF for a German translation of the key pages and 1 400 CHF for portraits by a Lucerne photographer, for 7 700 CHF in total. The gap is 20 300 CHF. If an average mandate brings 6 000 CHF in fees, that gap equals just over 3 mandates.
For reference, Kolonell built the bilingual FR/EN site of TR Signing Group (trsigninggroup.com), a notary and apostille service in New Jersey, with verified quote requests per file and an appointment calendar: a structure close to that of a firm taking structured mandates remotely.
FAQ
Can a remote studio write my site in German? Kolonell's grid includes native English or French copywriting, not German. Budget 1 000 to 2 500 CHF for a professional translator on 8 to 12 pages, or choose a German-speaking local agency.
How long does a law firm site take? Allow 3 to 4 weeks at Kolonell once the core content is supplied. Lucerne agencies typically quote 8 to 16 weeks depending on their workload.
How does payment work? By bank transfer in CHF, 50 % at project kickoff and 50 % at delivery. The tier price (2 700, 4 500 or 8 200 CHF) is fixed before work starts.
Is a client portal included? No. A client portal, booking with payment or an integration with your case software is quoted on request, on top of the 2 700 to 8 200 CHF grid.
Does the nFADP require Swiss hosting? No, the nFADP in force since 1 September 2023 does not require hosting in Switzerland. Transfers abroad do require an adequate level of protection, which you should check with each provider.
