The verdict in three sentences
For a St Helier studio fitting out boutique hotels, restaurants, bars and wellness spaces, the question is not only local or remote: on an island, any physical presence from outside costs a flight or a ferry. A Jersey agency is the best choice if your site has to follow seasonal projects and frequent shoots closely; a remote studio works if an island photographer produces your images and you want a fixed price. The 2026 Kolonell grid is £2,300 (Starter), £3,900 (Growth) and £6,900 (Premium).
What does being on an island actually change?
In Jersey three kinds of provider compete: island agencies, mainland UK agencies that fly in occasionally, and remote studios. The table compares what genuinely depends on location.
| Factor | Jersey agency | Mainland agency | Remote studio (Kolonell) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visiting a project in St Aubin or Gorey | within the hour | flight or ferry, roughly £150 to £400 return | no, remote coordination |
| Photographer available on the island | local network | often sent from the mainland | Jersey photographer you hire |
| Sign-off meetings | in person | video, or billed travel | video |
| Time-zone overlap | full | full | full, UK hours |
| Knowledge of Jersey data protection law | usually good | varies | to set out in the brief |
| Build price | £5,000 to £16,000 | £6,000 to £18,000 | £2,300 to £6,900 |
| Timeline | 8 to 12 weeks | 10 to 14 weeks | 3 to 4 weeks |
The mainland agency often combines the drawbacks: more expensive, and no more present day to day than a remote studio. The real contest is between the island agency and the remote studio.
When the island agency is clearly preferable
Jersey hospitality runs on the season. If you deliver several venues between autumn and Easter, with openings that must be photographed and published before visitors arrive, a St Helier agency that walks your Waterfront site on Tuesday and updates the website on Thursday has real value. The same applies if your operator clients want to attend meetings, or if you also need visual identity and print material for their venues.
The remote studio is the right option when you already hold professional images with a licence, operators have given written consent, and you want to be live in 3 to 4 weeks. Each tier is detailed on the Kolonell international offer.
A Jersey hospitality interiors site: requirements and cost
Your site speaks to operators and investors, not hotel guests. It should therefore present:
- case studies by venue type (boutique hotel in St Brelade's Bay, harbour restaurant, bar, spa), with scheduling and operating constraints, never the operator's figures without written consent;
- light galleries in WebP or AVIF, lazy loading, usable on mobile;
- photo credits and licences for every image, and consent from anyone identifiable;
- a qualifying form: venue type, number of rooms or covers, fit-out budget band, target opening date;
- a method and fees page in general terms, a press page limited to real coverage, links to Instagram, Pinterest or Houzz, and craft or supplier partners described plainly.
Three-year cost, 2026 ballpark from typical quotes; market maintenance is an assumption.
| Option | Build | Travel (third party) | Maintenance months 4 to 36 (market assumption) | 3-year total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jersey agency | £5,000 to £16,000 | none | £90 to £250 a month, i.e. £2,970 to £8,250 | £7,970 to £24,250 |
| Mainland agency | £6,000 to £18,000 | 2 trips, £300 to £800 | £80 to £250 a month, i.e. £2,640 to £8,250 | £8,940 to £27,050 |
| Freelancer | £2,500 to £7,000 | varies | £40 to £120 a month, i.e. £1,320 to £3,960 | £3,820 to £10,960 |
| Kolonell Growth | £3,900 | none | on quote | £3,900 + maintenance on quote |
| Kolonell Premium | £6,900 | none | on quote | £6,900 + maintenance on quote |
Ask each one: will the domain and hosting be in your name? Who owns the code? Which files are handed over at the end of the contract? Who negotiates photo rights with the operator?

Jersey does not apply UK GDPR directly: the island has its own Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2018, close to GDPR in its principles, overseen by the Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner. Your privacy notice, cookie banner and form data handling should refer to it. The title architect is protected in the UK and many other jurisdictions: your site should speak of an interior design studio and never present the team as architects unless someone is actually registered. For accessibility, aim for WCAG 2.2 AA. This is not legal advice.
Mini case study
Illustrative example: Sophie, founder of a hospitality interiors studio in St Helier, has four venues photographed a year. With a mainland photographer, each day costs about £750 plus £350 of travel and £180 of accommodation, i.e. £1,280. With a Jersey photographer at the same day rate, she saves £530 per shoot: £2,120 a year.
For the website, she compares a £10,500 island agency quote with Growth at £3,900 plus four days from an independent local photographer (4 × £750 = £3,000 of third-party cost): £6,900, a £3,600 gap. Since her images are produced on the island anyway, she goes with the remote studio.
FAQ
Is a mainland UK agency a good compromise?
Rarely: it typically charges £6,000 to £18,000 and every visit adds £150 to £400 of travel. Day to day it is no more present than a remote studio.
Does UK GDPR apply to my Jersey website?
The local reference is the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2018, under the JOIC. If you also target clients in the UK or EU, have your notices checked by an adviser, usually a 1 to 2 hour job.
