The verdict in three sentences
For a kitchen, bath and joinery design studio in Gatineau working with Outaouais craftsmen, the real question is less the price than the split of work: who gets the photos, who writes in French and English, who looks after the site after launch. A Gatineau or Ottawa agency takes on coordination in the field, which helps if you deliver a lot and have no time to direct a photographer. A remote studio such as Kolonell, at USD 4,900 for Growth with a French-only site or USD 8,900 for Premium (the multilingual tier, languages set in the quote), fits when you keep control of the imagery and want a fixed cost, a clean handover and a launch in 3 to 4 weeks.
Who does what, stage by stage?
Gatineau's market straddles two provinces: Old Hull matchbox houses, 1960s bungalows in the Gatineau sector, newer builds on the Plateau and in Aylmer, renovated cottages toward Chelsea and Wakefield, and Ottawa clients who cross the river. The table shows what each provider brings and the time you should set aside.
| Stage | Gatineau or Ottawa agency | Remote studio (Kolonell) | Your time to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scoping | In-person workshop at your studio | 60 to 90 minute video call in Eastern Time | 2 to 3 hours |
| Copywriting | Agency copywriter | Native French or English copywriting included | 2 hours of review per language |
| Project photos | Shoot coordinated on site | Your photos, or a local photographer hired separately (third-party cost) | 0 to 8 hours depending on option |
| Maker pages | Possible meeting with the cabinetmaker | Written questionnaire sent to each craftsman | 1 hour |
| Build and reviews | Review in person or by video | Two screen-shared reviews | 3 hours |
| After launch | Monthly retainer is common | 3 months of support included, then on quote | Varies |
Questions to ask both: will the domain, hosting and code be in our name? Who reviews the English version? How do you credit a craftsman? What is the process if we leave the provider?
What does a bilingual site cost over three years?
A typical example as a 2026 ballpark, based on typical quotes and public agency rate pages in the region, in CAD converted at roughly USD 0.72. Maintenance is a market assumption of CAD 200 a month over 33 months, applied to both columns for comparison.
| Line item | Gatineau or Ottawa agency | Kolonell Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Build of a 15 to 25 page bilingual portfolio | CAD 24,000, about USD 17,300 (common range CAD 18,000 to 35,000) | USD 8,900 |
| Native French and English copywriting | Included | Premium (the multilingual tier, languages set in the quote) |
| Photos of 4 projects by a local photographer | Coordinated, about USD 2,900 | Third-party cost, about USD 2,900 |
| Support for the first 3 months | Included | Included |
| Maintenance, months 4 to 36 (market assumption) | About USD 4,800 | On quote, USD 4,800 used for comparison |
| Time to launch | 8 to 14 weeks | 3 to 4 weeks |
| 3-year total, approx. | USD 25,000 | USD 16,600 |
If your clients are entirely French-speaking, Growth at USD 4,900 replaces Premium and the gap widens. Tiers are detailed on the Kolonell international offer.
When is the local agency clearly the better choice?
If you deliver two kitchens a month, your cabinetmakers in Buckingham or Masson-Angers have never been photographed and nobody at the studio has time to direct a shoot, an Outaouais agency that sends its crew on site will serve you well. The same goes if you want a single contact for the site, your business profile, social media and print for a home show, or if you want to approve material samples in person. A remote studio is enough when you have photos and a clear message and mostly want a fast portfolio, bilingual if needed, and a form that filters.
What the site must include, and the Quebec frame
Need a professional website?
Kolonell builds websites that attract clients, optimized for the Sénégalese market. Free quote in 2 minutes.
- Portfolio by room and house type: a kitchen in a matchbox house, a bungalow bathroom, custom built-ins, in WebP or AVIF with lazy loading.
- Partner craftsmen: named with their consent, exact role described, workshop photos credited.
- Discretion: written homeowner consent, neighborhood rather than address, no family photos.
- Qualified form: room, budget range, timeline, Quebec or Ontario side, nothing more.
- Process and fees page in general terms, a press page for real coverage only, links to Houzz, Instagram and Pinterest.
In Gatineau, Law 25 applies: a clear privacy policy, published contact details for the person in charge of protecting personal information, non-essential cookies off by default, and an assessment before personal information is communicated outside Quebec. The Charter of the French language requires the site to be available in French. If you showcase partner contractors, check that they hold the Régie du bâtiment du Québec license required for their work. For the interior designer title, check with the provincial association, and never present the studio as architects. CASL governs your newsletter. This is not legal advice.
Mini case study
Illustrative example. Julien runs a kitchen and joinery studio in Aylmer. He gets about 25 inquiries a month, 15 of them out of budget or out of area, and each first call lasts 30 minutes: 7.5 hours lost every month. Working assumption: a form with a budget range and service area cuts unqualified inquiries to 5 a month, or 5 hours recovered monthly, 60 hours a year.
That leaves the tier. About 40% of his inquiries come from English speakers in Ottawa and Aylmer. Growth at USD 4,900 in French only, or Premium at USD 8,900, the multilingual tier: the USD 4,000 difference, spread over 10 English-language inquiries a month, works out to about USD 33 per inquiry over 12 months. Julien picks Premium.
FAQ
Does a Gatineau studio need a bilingual site? French is required by the Charter of the French language. If 30 to 40% of your clients come from Ottawa, an English version is justified: Premium at USD 8,900 is the multilingual tier, with languages set in the quote.
Do Ontario rules apply too? Your studio is based in Quebec, so Law 25 is your main frame for the site. AODA targets Ontario organizations, but aiming for WCAG 2.1 AA, roughly 5 to 10% of build effort as a ballpark, remains good practice.
Can I show the craftsmen I work with? Yes, with their written consent and an exactly described role. A page of 4 to 6 partners, with RBQ licenses checked for contractors, reassures clients on both sides of the river.
Who owns the site at the end? Your studio: domain, hosting, code and CMS access in your name, written into the contract. Require a full handover within 10 business days if you leave.
How long until launch? Allow 3 to 4 weeks with Kolonell, against the 8 to 14 weeks often quoted locally. Add 1 to 2 weeks if the photos still need to be taken.
Let's scope your project. A kitchen and joinery portfolio in French or bilingual, USD 4,900 to 8,900, live in 3 to 4 weeks. See the international offer or request a free quote: detailed reply within 48 hours.
