The verdict in three sentences
For an interior design studio in Amsterdam, the choice between a local agency and a remote studio depends less on price than on one question: who produces the images of your projects, because your portfolio is your sales tool. If you need an agency to direct and shoot your realisations on site, a local Amsterdam agency is the better choice, at a 2026 ballpark of 10 000 to 40 000 EUR. If you already have good photography and want a precise, fast site, a remote studio like Kolonell builds it for a fixed 2 700, 4 500 or 8 200 EUR, with you keeping the domain and every access.
Which criteria actually separate a local agency from a remote studio?
Most Amsterdam interior studios we speak to hesitate on the same points: being able to meet in person, the photo shoot, and whether a team outside the Netherlands understands the Dutch market. This table sets them side by side.
| Criterion | Amsterdam agency | Local freelancer | Kolonell (remote) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Face-to-face meetings in your studio | Yes, usually included | Often possible | No, Google Meet calls at your hour |
| Photo or video shoot of your projects | Often offered or coordinated | Sometimes, if also a photographer | Not included: you supply images or book a local photographer |
| Time zone | Same | Same | Team in Senegal (GMT), 1 to 2 hours behind Amsterdam |
| Build price, 2026 ballpark | 10 000 to 40 000 EUR | 3 000 to 10 000 EUR | 2 700 / 4 500 / 8 200 EUR, fixed |
| Usual timeline | 8 to 14 weeks | 4 to 10 weeks | 3 to 4 weeks, Premium usually 4 to 6 |
| Dutch copy | Native, usually included | Native | Supplied by you or quoted separately |
| Ownership of domain and code | Check the contract | Check the contract | Domain in your name, all access handed over |
| Support after launch | Maintenance contract | Case by case | 3 months, 6 months on Premium |
The local price ranges are prudent orders of magnitude, built from public rate cards of Dutch agencies, minimum project sizes shown on Clutch.co profiles of Amsterdam studios, hourly rates commonly published (often 85 to 150 EUR per hour) and freelancer rates visible on Malt and Upwork. A design-led agency working for architecture and furniture brands usually sits in the upper half. Details of the remote offer are on our international website page.
When is a local Amsterdam agency the better choice?
We say it plainly: in some situations you should hire locally.
- You have no usable project photography and want the agency to art-direct shoots in apartments along the canals or in new builds in Amsterdam-Noord and Zuidas. A local team that coordinates stylist, photographer and timing on site saves you weeks.
- Dutch is your main sales language and you want an agency that writes and edits Dutch copy natively, round after round, without you checking it.
- You want a brand identity overhaul at the same time: logo, materials board, stationery and showroom signage, with workshops in person.
- Your site has to connect to an existing project tool or a product configurator: that is an application, and a local team you can sit with may be easier to manage.
When does a remote studio like Kolonell fit?
A remote studio fits when the creative raw material already exists. Typical profile: a studio of two to eight designers working on residential renovations, boutique hospitality and office fit-outs, with a professional photographer they already use, and an outdated site built on a template years ago.
- Your photography is ready or booked, and you want the site to show it at full quality and load fast on mobile.
- You work largely with international clients (expat families, foreign companies opening offices around Zuidas, hospitality groups), so English is the main language and Dutch can follow.
- You want a fixed price and a written scope rather than hourly billing.
- You are comfortable working by video call and written weekly updates.
Every tier includes a project manager reachable in your time zone, native English copywriting, delivery in 3 to 4 weeks (Premium: written schedule at kickoff, usually 4 to 6 weeks) and 3 months of support after launch (6 months on Premium). Payment is by bank transfer or Wise, 50 % at kickoff and 50 % at delivery. We do not do photo or video shoots on site and we do not hold physical meetings.
What does each tier include for an interior design studio?
| Item | Starter 2 700 EUR | Growth 4 500 EUR | Premium 8 200 EUR |
|---|---|---|---|

| Services | One page | One page per service: full design, styling, consultation, turnkey | Process page with phases and fee approach |
| Contact | Simple form | Qualified brief: address area, surface, budget band, start date | Qualified brief plus call booking request |
| Journal or press | No | Simple news section | Journal with categories, press mentions |

A client portal showing moodboards and purchase lists, a 3D room planner or a webshop for your own furniture line are custom applications, quoted on request. Ongoing SEO work is quoted on request as well.
What does an Amsterdam interior studio site need, and which rules apply?
The Amsterdam market mixes canal-house renovations with strict heritage constraints, new residential districts, hotels and restaurants that refresh their interiors regularly, and international offices. Buyers compare several studios online before calling, so the site must answer three things fast: what you design, at what scale, and how you work.
- Image rights: photographs of your projects belong to the photographer unless your contract transfers them. Check that web use, social use and press use are covered, and that the owners of private homes have agreed to publication.
- Credits: name the architect, photographer and stylist where your agreements require it.
- Language: Dutch is expected by many local private clients; English is enough for much international work. Dutch copy is supplied by you or quoted separately.
- Data protection: the GDPR applies, supervised in the Netherlands by the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens. A brief form that asks for a home address and budget needs a clear privacy notice and a lawful basis.
- Accessibility: the European Accessibility Act has applied since 28 June 2025 to certain services; whether it covers your studio depends on your activity and size. WCAG 2.1 AA is a sensible technical target in any case.
This is not legal advice.

Kolonell builds websites that attract clients, optimized for the Sénégalese market. Free quote in 2 minutes.
Which questions should you ask before signing?
- Who owns the domain, the hosting account and the design files at the end?
- How many revision rounds are included, and what does an extra project page cost?
- Who writes the copy, and in which languages?
- Will the images be compressed without visible loss on large screens?
- What happens after the support period, and at what rate?
Warning signs: a quote that does not mention image rights, a template sold as bespoke design, hosting locked in the supplier's name.
Mini case study
Illustrative example. Femke V. runs a five-person interior studio in Amsterdam-Oud-Zuid. She has 14 projects shot by a photographer she trusts. She compares two options:
- Amsterdam design agency: 24 000 EUR, Dutch and English, new art direction and two extra shoots included, 12 weeks.
- Kolonell Premium: 8 200 EUR bilingual FR/EN for the main pages, plus Dutch translation by her own copywriter at 1 400 EUR and one extra shoot booked directly at 1 600 EUR.
Remote route: 8 200 + 1 400 + 1 600 = 11 200 EUR, against 24 000 EUR, a gap of 12 800 EUR. In exchange, Femke coordinates the shoot and the Dutch copy herself. If she had no photography at all, the agency would have been the more sensible choice.
