The verdict in three sentences
In Queenstown, the choice is not really between a local agency and a distant studio: the local agency pool is small, and most firms actually compare a freelancer in town, an agency in Dunedin, Christchurch or Auckland, and a remote studio. The deciding factor is the seasonal calendar: your operator and hospitality clients are unreachable at the height of winter and summer, so the site has to be built in the shoulder season. A fixed-price remote studio (Starter at USD 2,900, Growth at USD 4,900) fits that short window; a provider on the ground remains the better option if you want to film at clients' premises.
What are the real options in a small market?
2026 ballpark based on public agency rate pages and typical agency quotes for an 8 to 12 page brokerage site; approximate conversion NZD 1 ≈ USD 0.59.
| Option | Build price | On-site presence | Usual lead time | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Queenstown freelancer | NZD 3,000 to 8,000 (≈ USD 1,770 to 4,720) | Yes | 4 to 10 weeks | Limited availability in peak season |
| Dunedin or Christchurch agency | NZD 8,000 to 22,000 (≈ USD 4,720 to 12,980) | Occasional trips | 6 to 10 weeks | Travel costs to budget |
| Auckland agency | NZD 12,000 to 35,000 (≈ USD 7,080 to 20,650) | Rare | 6 to 12 weeks | Price and distance |
| Remote studio (Kolonell) | USD 2,900, 4,900 or 8,900 | No, local photographer as a third-party cost | 3 to 4 weeks | Narrower live window |
| Maintenance after launch, market assumption | NZD 100 to 350 a month (≈ USD 59 to 207) | Kolonell: on quote after 3 included months |
A freelancer in town is often the best choice for a small, simple site, provided they are available and the contract settles ownership of the code and domain. Kolonell tier details are on the international offer page.
When in the year should you run the project?
The winter season (skiing at Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and towards Cardrona) runs roughly from June to September, and summer peaks from December to February. Your clients are then busy running their businesses, and so are you, with renewals and claims.
| Period | Client workload | Website project fit |
|---|---|---|
| April to May | Low, shoulder season | Ideal: workshops, content, photos |
| June to September | High, winter season | Avoid client interviews, small tweaks only |
| October to November | Low, shoulder season | Ideal for a redesign or a new section |
| December to February | High, summer season | Launch not advised |
| March | Medium | Scoping and quotes |
With a studio delivering in 3 to 4 weeks, one shoulder season is enough. With a provider working to 8 or 10 weeks, the project risks spilling into the next peak.
When does the provider on the ground win?
To be straight about it: if your site needs to show clients in action (a jet boat run on the Shotover, a bungy jump, a lodge in Arrowtown), a provider who can film on location is a real asset. The same goes if your principals want someone in Frankton who can drop into the office. A remote studio is enough when part of your client base lives outside town, which is common for holiday home owners based in Auckland, Australia or elsewhere: they read you online anyway. On hours, the project manager is reachable in your business hours under the offer, but check the slots around the daylight saving switch in late September.
To ask every provider: will the .co.nz domain and hosting be in your name? How many compliance review rounds are included? Who writes the copy, in New Zealand English? What does a change cost in peak season?
Site needs and the regulatory frame
Pages to plan: adventure activity operators (liability, property, business interruption, in general terms), hospitality, holiday homes and short-term rentals, personal lines, a claims guide, complaints and team pages. Adventure operators have their own safety regime overseen by WorkSafe: the site can mention it without going into detail or promising cover. A quote form limited to useful data, with secure document upload on quote.
Since 2021, insurance advice has fallen under the Financial Markets Authority's licensing regime for financial advice providers, with disclosure duties to be reproduced as approved by your compliance lead. The Privacy Act 2020 and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner govern your forms; the Fair Trading Act prohibits misleading claims. Aim for WCAG 2.2 AA. No page should promise a premium, a saving or a claim outcome. This is not legal advice.

Mini case study
Illustrative example. Olivia Bremner runs a small fictional brokerage in Frankton. She wants the site live on 1 June, before the winter season.
Working backwards with a remote studio: 2 weeks of compliance review, 4 weeks of build, 1 week of scoping, so 7 weeks: start by mid-April at the latest. With a Christchurch agency at 8 weeks plus 2 of review, she would have to start in late March, at the tail of summer. On budget: agency at NZD 18,000 (≈ USD 10,620) plus NZD 1,200 (≈ USD 708) of recharged travel, about USD 11,328; studio on Growth at USD 4,900 plus a Queenstown photographer at NZD 900 (≈ USD 531, third-party cost), USD 5,431. Gap: about USD 5,897. Olivia chooses the remote studio and books the photographer in April, during the shoulder season.
FAQ
Are there enough agencies in Queenstown?
The pool is small: a few freelancers and studios, often fully booked in season. Most firms also compare 1 or 2 agencies in Dunedin, Christchurch or Auckland.
Which tier for a small firm?
Starter at USD 2,900 covers 5 to 6 pages and a form. Growth at USD 4,900 suits you if you want separate pages for adventure operators, hospitality and holiday homes.
Do we need pages in other languages for overseas owners?
Rarely for a broker, as English covers most of the client base. If needed, Premium at USD 8,900 is the multilingual tier, languages set in the quote.
How much time should we set aside?
Allow 7 weeks in total with a remote studio, compliance review included. Place them in April and May or in October and November.
What happens after the 3 months of support?
Kolonell maintenance is then on quote, with a written scope. On the local market, the usual assumption is NZD 100 to 350 a month.
