The verdict in three sentences
For an architecture firm in Stockholm, the right provider is the one that can present projects photographed to the centimetre, not necessarily the one based in Södermalm. A local agency makes sense if your site is part of a full identity overhaul or a competition entry with a tight schedule and in-person meetings; a remote studio is enough if your photos exist, you know which projects to show and you want a fixed budget of EUR 2,700 to 8,200. The most underrated criterion is enquiry qualification: a form asking for budget, plot and timeline saves more architect hours than a spectacular design.
What does a sustainability-focused practice really need?
Take a common Stockholm case: an 8 to 12 person practice specialising in timber construction, energy retrofits and passive houses. Its clients are affluent homeowners, housing cooperatives (bostadsrättsföreningar), developers and sometimes public clients. The site therefore needs to:
- present a filterable portfolio by type (housing, public buildings, renovation), material and energy performance level;
- display heavy images without hurting speed: AVIF and WebP formats, lazy loading, a mobile LCP target under 2.5 seconds;
- showcase awards, competitions and publications on an up-to-date press page;
- offer a CMS where a partner can add a project in under 20 minutes;
- exist in Swedish and English, since part of the competitions and clients are international.
How do you score a local agency against a remote studio?
Here is a grid scored out of 5, to adapt to your practice. It reflects a firm whose visual identity is already in place.
| Criterion | Weight | Stockholm local agency | Remote studio (Kolonell) |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-person workshops | Medium | 5 | 2 |
| Time-zone overlap (CET) | Medium | 5 | 4 (1 to 2 h difference) |
| Native English copywriting | High | 3 | 5 |
| Native Swedish copywriting | High | 5 | 2 (on quote) |
| Photo and drone logistics | Medium | 4 | 2 (local photographer) |
| Price and predictability | High | 2 | 5 |
| Code and domain ownership | High | To negotiate | In the client's name |
The reading is simple: if native Swedish and physical presence weigh most, the local agency wins. If English, a fixed budget and clear ownership dominate, the remote studio comes out ahead.
What does each option cost over 3 years?
2026 ballpark figures based on public rate pages of local agencies and typical agency quotes, converted from Swedish kronor.

| Maintenance and hosting | EUR 2,700 to 7,200 | EUR 1,500 to 4,000 | 3 months included, then as needed |
| Updates (competitions, new filters) | EUR 1,500 to 5,000 | EUR 1,000 to 3,000 | On quote |
| Indicative total | EUR 20,200 to 62,200 | EUR 10,500 to 29,000 | EUR 8,500 to 18,000 depending on options |
Kolonell tiers: Starter EUR 2,700, Growth EUR 4,500, Premium EUR 8,200, with a project manager in your time zone, native English or French copywriting, delivery in 3 to 4 weeks and 3 months of support. More on the international offer page.
When is a local agency clearly preferable?
Honestly, in three situations: your practice is changing its name or identity and wants full brand work; you are preparing a competition entry with daily exchanges in Swedish; or your clients are almost exclusively Swedish and the site must first be written in flawless Swedish. Otherwise, a remote studio working with a local photographer does the job very well.
What should you check before signing, whatever the provider?
- Image rights: architectural photos and drone footage usually belong to the photographer. Get a written licence covering web, press and competition use, ideally without a time limit. Drone flights are governed by EU rules and the Swedish Transport Agency; use a registered operator.
- Titles and credits: describe qualifications, affiliations and project credits accurately, especially for projects delivered jointly with other practices.
- Personal data: GDPR applies to the enquiry form, supervised by IMY (Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten). Collect only what is needed and publish a privacy notice; non-essential cookies require consent.
- Accessibility: aim for WCAG 2.1 AA or 2.2 AA, with alt text that genuinely describes projects. It helps public clients reviewing your references.
- Ownership: domain, code and content in the firm's name, with export possible.

Mini case study
Illustrative example: Johan Ek, partner at a 10-person timber and passive house practice in Stockholm, receives 120 enquiries a year, 55 percent of them off-target (small jobs, budgets too low). Each off-target enquiry costs about 1.5 hours of architect time at EUR 95, so 120 × 55% × 1.5 × 95 = EUR 9,405 a year. A form asking for budget, plot size and timeline halves those off-target enquiries, saving about EUR 4,700 a year. With the Growth tier at EUR 4,500 and EUR 6,000 of local photography, the EUR 10,500 investment is covered in just over 2 years by that gain alone, before counting better-targeted projects.
FAQ
Can a remote studio write in Swedish?
Included native copywriting is in English or French; Swedish is quoted separately or supplied by your team. For a firm with 80 percent Swedish clients, this can tip the balance toward a local agency.
How many projects should the portfolio show at launch?
Between 8 and 15 well-documented projects is usually enough. Ten projects with professional photos, plans and key figures beat 40 thumbnails without context.
Do heavy images slow the site down?
Not if they are served as AVIF or WebP with lazy loading. The target is a mobile LCP under 2.5 seconds, even with 30-image galleries.
How much does an architecture firm website cost at Kolonell?
EUR 2,700 for Starter, EUR 4,500 for Growth and EUR 8,200 for Premium, delivered in 3 to 4 weeks once content is ready. Photography remains the firm's cost.
Who owns the photos used on the site?
Usually the photographer, who grants a licence. Check that it covers at least web, press and competitions for the whole lifetime of the site.
