The verdict in three sentences
For a Stellenbosch architecture practice, choosing between a local agency and a remote studio turns less on price than on two questions: who will be on site when the drone goes up over a cellar under construction, and who will own the files afterwards. A remote studio with a fixed grid (USD 2,900 to 8,900 at Kolonell) handles strategy, design, copy and build well, provided you hire a local photographer separately and write ownership into the contract. A local agency remains the better option if you want monthly in-person workshops, Afrikaans copy written by a native speaker, or one team that also handles brochures and signage.
Which criteria actually decide it?
A Winelands practice designing tasting rooms, estate hotels and homes for overseas owners has different needs from a workplace firm in Sandton. Your clients are often in London, Munich or Amsterdam, your projects are spread between the Jonkershoek Valley, Franschhoek and Paarl, and your site has to reassure an investor who does not know the region yet. So the criteria below carry different weights.
| Criterion | Local agency (Stellenbosch, Cape Town) | Remote studio | Weight for a Winelands practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time zone | Same zone (SAST, UTC+2) | Kolonell works on UTC+0 (Dakar): 2 h offset, about 6 h overlap | Low |
| In-person meetings | Easy, 20 to 60 min drive | Video calls, travel on quote | High if workshops are frequent |
| Languages | English, Afrikaans often native | Native English or French, Afrikaans via a reviewer | Medium |
| On-site photo and drone | Supplier network often included | You hire a local photographer and drone pilot | High |
| Price of a portfolio site | USD 6,000 to 15,000 ballpark | USD 2,900 to 8,900, fixed price | Medium |
| Ownership of domain, code, images | Varies, check it | Varies; at Kolonell, in the client's name | High |
| Maintenance and CMS | Monthly retainer common | 3 months included, then on quote | Medium |
Local quotes are in rand; the figures below are converted to dollars at roughly 17 to 19 rand to the dollar, rounded. They are 2026 ballparks drawn from public local agency rate pages and typical agency quotes, not a survey.
| Option | Typical scope | 2026 ballpark |
|---|---|---|
| Winelands freelancer | Adapted theme, 6 to 10 pages | USD 1,500 to 4,000 |
| Small local studio | Custom design, portfolio CMS | USD 5,000 to 10,000 |
| Established Cape Town agency | Strategy, custom build, content | USD 10,000 to 25,000 |
| Kolonell Starter | Polished showcase site, contact form | USD 2,900 |
| Kolonell Growth | Filterable portfolio, CMS, qualification form | USD 4,900 |
| Kolonell Premium | Bilingual, advanced animation, press and awards | USD 8,900 |
| Photo and drone (any option) | 1 to 2 shoot days per project set | USD 800 to 2,500 |
All three Kolonell tiers include a project manager reachable in your time zone, native English or French copywriting, delivery in 3 to 4 weeks and 3 months of support. Details are on the international offer page.
When is a local agency clearly the better choice?
To be honest, a remote studio is not always the answer. The local agency wins if the partners want to sign off every mockup around a table, if most of your clients read Afrikaans first and expect a very local tone, or if you want a single partner for the website, site hoardings, tender brochures and opening-day videos. It also has the edge when a heritage project means documenting a Cape Dutch building quickly before works start: a supplier twenty minutes away reacts faster.
A remote studio is enough when the main need is a fast, well-written, high-performing portfolio, you already manage your own photographers, and your conversations with overseas clients happen on video anyway.
Questions to ask both types of provider:
- Will the domain, hosting and analytics accounts be in our name from day one?
- Who holds the rights to the code, copy and visuals, and does the photo licence cover web, press and award entries?
- How many projects can we add ourselves in the CMS, and how long does one take?
- What page weight and LCP do you target on mobile for a 40-image gallery?
- What happens when support ends: rates, response time, handover of access?
- Does the enquiry form filter by project type, plot and budget?
What does a Winelands architecture site need?
Whoever builds it, the brief stays the same: a filterable portfolio (wine estate, hospitality, residential, heritage; location; year), images served as AVIF or WebP with lazy loading, an LCP under 2.5 seconds on mobile, an awards and competitions page, a press page, a CMS to publish a project without a developer, and a form that asks for project type, plot location, budget band and timeline.
On the local frame: the profession is regulated by SACAP (South African Council for the Architectural Profession) under the Architectural Profession Act of 2000; show your registration category and number accurately. POPIA requires a privacy notice, a clear purpose for form data and reasonable security safeguards. Commercial drone flights fall under SACAA rules: ask the pilot for their authorisations. For accessibility, target WCAG 2.2 level AA as good practice. This is not legal advice.

Mini case study
Illustrative example: Annelie, partner at a five-person Stellenbosch practice specialising in tasting rooms and estate hotels, compares two scenarios over three years.
| Item over 3 years | Local agency | Remote studio (Growth) |
|---|---|---|
| Website build | USD 11,000 | USD 4,900 |
| Photo and drone, 2 sets | USD 2,400 | USD 2,400 |
| Maintenance (assumption) | USD 250 x 36 months = USD 9,000 | USD 150 x 33 months = USD 4,950 |
| Total | USD 22,400 | USD 12,250 |
The gap is about USD 10,150, roughly the cost of a third photo set plus an international award entry. Annelie picks the remote studio but keeps a Stellenbosch photographer on contract with a written licence assignment. Had her partners insisted on monthly on-site workshops, the local premium would have been justified.
FAQ
Can a remote studio handle our project photography?
It can write the brief, the shot list and the required formats, but the shoot itself stays local. Budget USD 800 to 2,500 per project set depending on days and drone work.
Is the time difference a problem?
With a 2-hour offset, there are about 6 hours of overlap per working day. Approvals happen the same day.
Do we need an Afrikaans version?
Only if a large share of your clients reads it first. A full English site plus one key Afrikaans page reviewed by a native speaker is often enough, for a few hundred dollars extra.
What should the contract say about ownership?
Domain, hosting, code, copy and accounts in the practice's name, plus a photo licence covering at least web and press. A clause requiring access handover within 10 working days prevents lock-in.
How long does a Growth site take?
At Kolonell, 3 to 4 weeks once the photos and core copy are available. A local agency typically quotes 6 to 12 weeks for a custom scope.
