The verdict in three sentences
For a small architecture atelier in Oslo, the choice turns less on price than on one question: do your clients mostly read Norwegian or English? If the client base is largely Norwegian and your partners like working in person, a local agency wins by a small margin; if a large share of enquiries comes from international clients or foreign second-home owners, a remote studio becomes the best balance of quality, speed and cost. Either way, get it in writing that the domain, code and photo licences are in your name.
This guide is written for architecture leaders in Oslo; pure price analysis is covered in a separate article.
How do you score the two options objectively?
Rather than comparing impressions, give each criterion a weight from 1 to 3 for your practice, then score each option from 1 to 5. Here is a typical grid for a two-partner atelier designing cabins (hytter) and house extensions.
| Criterion | Weight | Local Oslo agency | Remote studio (Kolonell) |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-person workshops | 2 | 5 | 2 |
| Norwegian copy (bokmål) | 3 | 5 | 2 |
| English copy for international clients | 2 | 4 | 5 |
| Delivery time | 2 | 2 | 5 |
| 3-year cost | 3 | 2 | 5 |
| Clarity of ownership (domain, code) | 3 | 4 | 4 |
| On-site photo and drone coordination | 2 | 4 | 2 |
| Weighted total out of 85 | 63 | 61 |
The result is close on purpose: it depends on your weights. If Norwegian only weighs 1 because most enquiries come from abroad, the local agency drops to 53 and the remote studio rises to 57. Run the exercise with your own weights before requesting quotes.
The remote studio works with a project manager reachable in your time zone (Central European Time), native English or French copywriting and delivery in 3 to 4 weeks. Norwegian pages are written by your team or a translator.
When is a local Oslo agency the better choice?
- Norwegian public clients and developers who expect a bokmål-first site using the exact vocabulary of building permit procedures.
- Monthly in-person meetings to evolve the site in step with competitions.
- A full identity overhaul with logo, stationery, site hoardings and website.
- A large content budget: if you want an agency to interview your partners, write long Norwegian copy and produce video, proximity becomes a real asset.
On the other hand, if the core need is a fast portfolio, a CMS to add projects and English pages, paying a local structure for meetings you do not need makes little sense.
What does each route cost over three years?
Local quotes are issued in Norwegian kroner; the amounts are converted to euros at a rounded rate. These are 2026 ballpark figures drawn from typical agency quotes and public agency rate pages.
| Cost item | Local agency | Oslo freelancer | Remote studio, Growth plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design and build | EUR 8,000 to 25,000 | EUR 3,500 to 8,000 | EUR 4,500 |
| Norwegian copy | Included or EUR 1,000 to 3,000 | EUR 800 to 1,500 (translator) | EUR 800 to 1,500 (translator) |
| Maintenance, 36 months | EUR 7,200 to 14,400 (200 to 400 per month) | EUR 3,000 to 6,000 | 3 months included, then on quote (assumed EUR 100 to 200 per month) |
| Timeline | 8 to 16 weeks | 6 to 12 weeks | 3 to 4 weeks |
| 3-year total | EUR 15,200 to 42,400 | EUR 7,300 to 15,500 | EUR 8,600 to 12,600 |
Kolonell offers three plans: Starter EUR 2,700, Growth EUR 4,500 and Premium EUR 8,200, with 3 months of support included. See the international offer. Search work and custom applications are quoted separately.
Oslo-specific site needs and rules to know
- Seasonal photography: winter days in Oslo are short. Schedule exterior shoots between March and October, and plan snow images for cabins. The photographer will be local whoever builds the site.
- Drone: check the pilot's operator registration and flight zones, especially near airports and the city centre.
- Image rights: a written licence covering web, press and award entries.
- A filterable portfolio by type (cabin, extension, multi-unit housing), location and status, with AVIF or WebP images and lazy loading.
- A qualification form: plot, municipality, budget band, timeline.
- Personal data: Norway applies GDPR through the European Economic Area and the supervisory authority is Datatilsynet. Privacy notice, consent for non-essential cookies, retention period for enquiries.
- Accessibility: Norway has universal design rules for digital solutions that also cover many private websites aimed at the public. Aim for WCAG 2.1 level AA as a minimum and check the exact scope of the obligations for your practice.

Questions to ask both providers: are the domain and code repository in our name? How long does it take to add a project ourselves? Who writes the Norwegian? What is the monthly cost after the support period? How do we get the site back if we switch provider?
Mini case study
*Illustrative example.* Ingrid Solberg co-runs a two-architect atelier in Oslo with her partner, focused on cabins and extensions. About 40% of her enquiries come from foreign owners. She fills in the grid with Norwegian at weight 2 and cost at weight 3. Result: 58 for the local agency, 59 for the remote studio.
On budget, the local agency quotes EUR 12,000 plus EUR 300 per month. Over 3 years: 12,000 + 300 × 36 = EUR 22,800. The Growth plan: EUR 4,500, plus EUR 1,000 of translation, plus EUR 150 per month after the 3 included months: 4,500 + 1,000 + 150 × 33 = EUR 10,450. The gap, EUR 12,350, funds a winter and a summer shoot. Ingrid picks the remote studio.
FAQ
Are Norwegian pages included?
Kolonell's native copywriting is in English or French. For 10 to 15 bokmål pages, budget EUR 800 to 1,500 of translation or write them in-house.
How many projects do we need at launch?
Eight to twelve well-photographed projects are enough. You add the next ones yourselves through the CMS, in 20 to 30 minutes per project.
Does universal design apply to a small practice?
The Norwegian rules cover many public-facing sites, including private ones. Targeting WCAG 2.1 AA usually adds little to the budget when planned from day one, unlike a retrofit.
Is the time difference a problem?
No: the project manager is reachable in your time zone. Expect 2 to 3 one-hour video calls over a 3 to 4 week project.
What if we switch provider later?
Require in the contract the handover of code, hosting access and a CMS export within 10 working days. That is the best insurance whichever route you pick.
