The verdict in three sentences
In Victoria, a CPA firm rarely chooses between just two options: there is the Island agency, the Vancouver agency that takes the ferry for key meetings, and the remote studio. If your clients are mostly retirees, provincial public servants and small tourism businesses, your site mainly needs clear service pages, excellent readability and a simple contact path, which a fixed-price studio delivers well. The local agency keeps the edge if you want in-person marketing support all year.
Victoria's market has its own traits: a large share of older clients (estates, T3 trust returns, pension income splitting), short-term rental owners, and cross-border clients with ties to Washington State. Those topics belong in your site structure.
Which criteria separate the three options?
Each criterion is scored from 1 (weak) to 5 (strong) for a 3 to 12 person firm. Treat it as a reading grid and weight it by your priorities.
| Criterion | Victoria agency | Vancouver agency | Remote studio (Kolonell type) |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-person meetings | 5 | 3 (ferry) | 1 (video) |
| Time zone overlap | 5 (Pacific Time) | 5 | 4 (project manager reachable in your time zone) |
| Native English or French copywriting | 3 | 4 | 5 (included) |
| On-site partner photos | 5 | 3 | 2 (local photographer to book) |
| Price for a defined scope | 2 | 2 | 5 |
| Clarity on domain and code ownership | varies | varies | 5 if written into the contract |
| Delivery time | 3 | 3 | 5 (3 to 4 weeks) |
Whatever you choose, have the contract state that the domain, hosting and code are in the firm's name.
How much should you budget over three years?

When is the Victoria agency the better choice?
- You want quarterly meetings at your office and a contact who knows your clients and your neighbourhood.
- You plan short partner videos explaining estate planning, filmed on your premises.
- You want a partner who also runs local advertising and your presence in Island business associations.
- Your team has no time to review copy and prefers in-person interviews.
A remote studio is enough once the scope is stable: pages per service (bookkeeping, payroll, T1, T2 and T3 returns, estate planning, Canada and US cross-border tax), a team page with CPA designations, a qualification form and a seasonal blog.
Accounting firm needs and the British Columbia frame
- Readability for older clients: a base font size of at least 18 px, strong contrast, a visible phone number. Target WCAG 2.1 AA; the provincial accessibility law focuses first on the public sector, but the standard remains the right benchmark.
- Data protection: in British Columbia, private organizations are generally covered by the provincial PIPA (Personal Information Protection Act). The form collects only what is needed (name, email, type of need); no tax documents and no SIN.
- Professional rules: CPA BC oversees members' conduct, including how designations are presented. Show "CPA" only for people who hold it and avoid numeric refund promises.
- Seasonality: April 30 for T1 returns, June 15 for self-employed individuals, and generally 90 days after year end for T3s. Go live between October and January.

- How many meetings are included, and in what format?

- What does an update cost in the middle of tax season?
Mini case study
Illustrative example: James, managing partner of a 5-person firm in James Bay, with 60% retired clients. A Vancouver agency quotes CAD 26,000 plus CAD 350 a month, or CAD 38,600 over three years, travel included. He picks Growth at USD 4,900 (about CAD 6,700), books a Victoria photographer for CAD 800 and budgets CAD 120 a month of support after the 3 included months, or CAD 3,960. Total: about CAD 11,460, some CAD 27,000 less, part of which funds a series of articles on estates.
FAQ
Does a remote studio understand Canadian tax?
It does not need to do your tax work: you validate the substance, the studio structures and writes. Plan 2 review rounds by a partner on each service page.
Do we need a French version in Victoria?
Rarely essential. It makes sense if 10% or more of your clients are francophone, for example military families from CFB Esquimalt or federal public servants.
How many pages should we plan?
A 3 to 12 person firm usually lands around 10 to 20 pages: home, 5 to 8 services, team, resources, contact.
Does the site meet WCAG 2.1 AA?
That is the delivery target: contrast, keyboard navigation and alt text, checked before launch. A full external audit remains optional.
Can we launch during tax season?
Not advisable: in March and April your partners will not have the 6 to 10 hours needed for approvals. Aim to launch before the end of January.
Let's scope your project. Describe your services, client base and launch window, and we will price a scope between USD 2,900 and USD 8,900 delivered in 3 to 4 weeks. See the international offer or request a free quote: detailed reply within 48 hours.
