The verdict in three sentences
If you can already build a page in HTML and CSS, JavaScript is the step that turns a static page into a website a client pays more for: a calculator, a form that checks entries, a filterable catalog. The Kolonell course JavaScript: make a website lively and interactive costs 75,000 FCFA for 16 hours online (level 3 of the track, intermediate, taught in French), four to eight times less than a bootcamp in Dakar. From Thiès, you also avoid transport and housing, which weigh heavily on a student budget.
What learning JavaScript from Thiès costs in 2026
| Option | Indicative price | Duration | Extra costs from Thiès |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kolonell course, level 3 | 75,000 FCFA (115 EUR, about 125 USD) | 16 h online, 4 to 5 weeks | Internet connection only |
| In-person bootcamp in Dakar | 300,000 to 600,000 FCFA (457 to 915 EUR) | 3 to 6 months | 2,000 to 3,000 FCFA transport per day, or housing |
| Private tutor | 10,000 to 20,000 FCFA per hour | As needed | Varies |
| Free tutorials (YouTube, documentation) | 0 FCFA | 40 to 100 scattered hours | Mobile data, high dropout rate |
| International subscription platform | 15,000 to 30,000 FCFA per month | 3 to 6 months | Content often in English |
| Full Web development track (5 levels) | 350,000 FCFA instead of 450,000 | Several months | From HTML basics to applications |
The syllabus has six modules: language basics, functions, arrays and objects, the DOM and events, forms, validation and local storage, asynchronous code with fetch and APIs, then organizing, debugging and publishing. You need a computer with VS Code and Chrome, and about 4 hours per week. No prior JavaScript knowledge is required, but level 2 of the Web development track, covering HTML and CSS, is recommended first.
What JavaScript earns in freelance work in 2026
In Thiès, many shops, private schools and small construction firms only have a Facebook page. Clients in Dakar and Abidjan readily work with a remote freelancer who can show completed projects.
| Type of assignment | Without JavaScript | With JavaScript | 2026 order of magnitude |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple showcase site (5 pages) | 100,000 to 200,000 FCFA | 150,000 to 300,000 FCFA | First assignments |
| Site with calculator or simulator | Not possible | 200,000 to 400,000 FCFA | Works estimates, school fees |
| Advanced form with validation | Basic form | 50,000 to 150,000 FCFA as a module | Registrations, bookings |
| Filterable catalog (shop, menu) | Static list | 150,000 to 350,000 FCFA | Shops and restaurants |
| Maintenance and small additions | Little demand | 25,000 to 75,000 FCFA per job | Recurring income |
| Internship or junior position | Rare | 100,000 to 250,000 FCFA per month | Dakar agencies and startups |
These amounts are estimates: your portfolio, reliability and network place you in the range, and nothing is guaranteed. First contracts often come through word of mouth, two or three months after finishing the course.
Mini case study
Ibrahima, 22, a computer science undergraduate at Iba Der Thiam University in Thiès, can build pages in HTML and CSS but sells nothing. He takes the 16 hours over five weeks, then builds three portfolio projects: a school fees simulator, a filterable restaurant menu and a booking form.
Calculation: 75,000 FCFA for the course, versus about 450,000 FCFA for a Dakar bootcamp plus 2,500 FCFA of transport per day over 3 months of classes at 4 days per week, about 120,000 FCFA. He saves nearly 495,000 FCFA. His first assignment, a site with a simulator for a Thiès driving school billed at 200,000 FCFA, pays back the course more than two and a half times.

FAQ
Can I take the course on a smartphone?
The videos can be watched on a smartphone, but you need a computer to code the exercises in VS Code. A used laptop at 120,000 FCFA is more than enough.
Do I need a good internet connection in Thiès?
A 4G connection or a home box is enough. Plan on about 3 to 5 GB of data for the 16 hours of video and resources.
Is JavaScript enough to get a job?
Not on its own. With HTML, CSS and JavaScript, you can target freelance assignments and internships; levels 4 and 5 of the track add the frameworks and applications expected for junior positions.
How long before my first assignment?
As an order of magnitude, 2 to 4 months after the course if you publish 3 solid projects and prospect every week. It depends a lot on your consistency.
How do I pay?
The 75,000 FCFA enrollment is paid with Wave or Orange Money, no bank card needed.
