Instant SEPA Transfer at B2B Checkout: Cost and Integration (2026)

E-commerce

The verdict in three sentences

For a B2B webshop whose average basket exceeds EUR 500, instant SEPA transfer via payment initiation costs 20 to 100 times less than cards, with funds credited in under 10 seconds. Since the EU instant payments regulation, eurozone banks must offer instant transfers at the same price as a standard transfer, which removed the last barrier for buyers. With an integration budget of EUR 4,000 to 12,000 excl. VAT, the investment usually pays back in one to four months.

What changed in 2025 and 2026

Regulation (EU) 2024/886 requires eurozone payment service providers to receive instant transfers since January 2025 and to send them since October 2025, priced identically to standard transfers and with a payee verification check (name and IBAN) before approval. In practice, your buyer, whether an SME accountant or a group purchaser, can pay a EUR 1,500 invoice from their banking app in seconds at no extra cost.

On the webshop side, the flow relies on payment initiation (PIS, defined by PSD2): the customer picks their bank at checkout, authenticates in their banking app and approves a prefilled transfer (amount, IBAN, order reference). No IBAN to copy, no wrong reference.

What integration costs

Three options coexist in 2026. The fastest is enabling payment initiation from your existing payment provider, if it supports it. The most common goes through a specialised open banking aggregator connected to 2,000 to 3,000 European banks, billed per payment. The heaviest, for large volumes, relies on a licence or direct access through your bank.

The most underestimated item is reconciliation. Each payment carries a unique reference generated by the shop; the confirmation webhook marks the order as paid, triggers fulfilment and matches the invoice in the accounting tool. That is where the CFO wins back the most time.

Annual savings by volume

Assumptions: EUR 1,500 average basket, 60% of customers switch from card to instant transfer, average card fees of 1.9%, instant transfer fee of EUR 0.50 per payment.

Orders per monthCurrent card fees / yearFees after 60% switch / yearAnnual savingsPayback on a EUR 8,000 integration

250EUR 85,500EUR 35,100EUR 50,4001.9 months

2,000EUR 684,000EUR 280,800EUR 403,2001 week

These are 2026 orders of magnitude: they depend on your card contract, the share of commercial cards (more expensive) and the actual switch rate, which mostly depends on how prominently the method is shown at checkout. A 1% discount for instant payment clearly speeds up adoption while staying profitable.

Mini case study

Claire, CFO of an industrial supplies distributor in Lyon, processes 400 orders a month with a EUR 1,500 average basket, i.e. EUR 600,000 monthly. Her card fees at 1.9% amount to EUR 11,400 a month. After integrating an aggregator (EUR 6,500 excl. VAT checkout + EUR 3,000 excl. VAT reconciliation), 55% of orders move to instant transfer: 220 payments at EUR 0.50, i.e. EUR 110, and card fees drop to EUR 5,130. Monthly savings: EUR 6,160, or EUR 73,900 a year, for a EUR 9,500 investment repaid in seven weeks. Her accounting team also saves around 25 hours a month of manual matching.

FAQ

Is instant transfer really free for the buyer?

Since 2025 their bank must charge the same price as a standard SEPA transfer, which is free in most business plans. The few accounts that charge for transfers pay around EUR 0.20 to 1 per transaction.

Is there an amount ceiling?

The SEPA Instant scheme has had no technical cap since 2023, but each bank can set default limits, often EUR 15,000 to 100,000 per day for business accounts. Customers can usually raise them in their banking app.

What happens with a dispute or a return?

The transfer is irrevocable: refunds are made through a return transfer you initiate, which removes card chargebacks. Set up a 48-hour refund procedure to reassure buyers.

Should we drop cards?

No: keep them for small baskets and new customers. Aim for 50 to 70% instant payments on baskets above EUR 500, which captures most of the savings.

How long to go live?

Allow 4 to 6 weeks with an aggregator, including reconciliation testing. Bank approval and PSD2 compliance are handled by the licensed provider.

Let's scope your project. We price the instant transfer integration on your B2B shop, checkout and accounting reconciliation included, in a EUR 4,000 to 12,000 excl. VAT range with a 4 to 6 week timeline. Detailed quote within 48 h. WhatsApp +221 77 596 93 33.
