Instant SEPA payments with automatic reconciliation for B2B e-commerce in Amsterdam

E-commerce

The verdict in three sentences

Since October 2025, every bank in the euro area must offer instant SEPA credit transfers at the same price as a regular transfer, with verification of payee. For a B2B e-commerce business in Amsterdam, that makes account-to-account payments (iDEAL, its successor Wero, or payment initiation) at 0.20 to 0.50 EUR per transaction far more attractive than cards at 1.5 to 2.5 %, provided bank reconciliation is automated. Budget 8,000 to 20,000 EUR for integration, recovered within months from 2 to 3 million EUR in annual collections.

The real cost of regular transfers

Bank transfer remains the preferred method for business buyers: no card limits, no fees for them, a clean audit trail. The pain is on the seller side. The customer pays with a vague reference ("INV 2026", the director's name, a truncated order number), funds land the next day, and an accountant spends mornings matching statements. Meanwhile the order waits or ships on credit without guarantee.

In the Netherlands, buyers already know iDEAL, which is migrating to Wero from 2026. With these flows, the buyer picks their bank at checkout, approves in their app, and the instant transfer carries a unique order reference generated by the store. Confirmation arrives in under 10 seconds, the order is released, and matching is automatic.

What to integrate and what it costs

A full project touches three blocks: the licensed payment provider (Mollie, Adyen, Buckaroo or an Open Banking aggregator), the store checkout, and the accounting software or ERP (Exact Online, AFAS, Twinfield, SAP Business One). Provider subscriptions usually range from 0 to 300 EUR per month depending on volume.

Total8,000 - 20,000 EUR6 - 10 weeks

These amounts are a 2026 order of magnitude for Dutch and Benelux projects, not an official price list. Dutch e-invoicing via Peppol is spreading among businesses, and a structured invoice carrying the same reference as the payment makes reconciliation even cleaner.

The math on 5 million EUR collected

On 5 million EUR of online collections, cards at 1.5 to 2.5 % would cost 75,000 to 125,000 EUR. At 0.35 EUR per transaction and a 900 EUR average basket, account-to-account payments cost about 1,950 EUR for 5,560 transactions. The real saving depends on the share you would have collected by card: on a typical mix, it lands between 50,000 and 100,000 EUR per year, plus the matching time removed.

Mini case study

Sarah, CFO of a technical supplies distributor in Amsterdam (illustrative persona), collects 5 million EUR per year online: 70 % by regular transfer, 30 % by card. She handles 3,900 transfers per year at 5 minutes of matching each.

You are :
  • Cards today: 1,500,000 EUR x 1.8 % = 27,000 EUR in fees.
  • Manual matching: 3,900 x 5 min = 325 hours x 45 EUR = 14,600 EUR.
  • After moving 60 % of card volume and 90 % of transfers to iDEAL / Wero: card fees 10,800 EUR, account-to-account about 1,600 EUR, residual matching 1,500 EUR.
  • Annual saving: 41,600 EUR - 13,900 EUR = 27,700 EUR.

With a 14,000 EUR integration, payback comes in about 6 months, before counting working capital gained from funds received in 10 seconds.

FAQ

Is an instant transfer more expensive than a regular one in 2026?

No. The EU regulation has required equal pricing since January 2025, and all euro area banks must send instant transfers since October 2025. The cost comes from the payment provider, about 0.20 to 0.50 EUR per transaction.

Will business buyers accept this payment method?

Yes for small and mid-size orders, up to 10,000 to 50,000 EUR depending on their bank limits. Key accounts will stay on 30 or 60-day transfers, which automatic reconciliation also handles.

What does integration cost on an existing store?

From 8,000 to 20,000 EUR depending on platform and ERP, over 6 to 10 weeks. A Shopify or WooCommerce store with an existing Mollie or Adyen plugin sits at the low end.

What happens if the payee name does not match?

Verification of payee warns the payer before sending. Make sure your account name matches your legal entity exactly, or 5 to 10 % of customers may abandon.

Should we keep card payments?

Yes, for buyers outside the euro area and purchasing cards. Cards simply become the second option at checkout.
