Instant bank transfer for B2B order payments in Amsterdam: costs (2026)

The verdict in three sentences

For a B2B wholesaler, cards are expensive: 1.2 to 1.8% of the amount on business cards, versus a fixed EUR 0.20 to 0.50 per transaction for instant bank transfer payment initiation. Since the EU Instant Payments Regulation, every eurozone bank must send and receive instant transfers at the same price as a standard transfer, which makes them free at most Dutch banks. Integrating it into a B2B store costs EUR 4,000 to 9,000 excluding VAT over 5 weeks, and often pays back in under two months.

Why cards weigh heavily on a wholesaler's margin

The CFO of a hygiene and cleaning products wholesaler in Amsterdam Westpoort processes 5,000 orders a month, with an average basket of EUR 380 excluding VAT. 40% of customers pay by card online, the rest on 30-day terms by standard transfer. Two problems: card fees, higher on business and non-EU cards, and 30 to 45 days to collect on credit terms, with 2.5% late payments.

Payment methodCost per transaction 2026Time to receive fundsChargeback or dispute risk

Payment initiation works like this: at checkout, the buyer picks their bank, authenticates in their banking app and approves a prefilled instant transfer (amount, wholesaler IBAN, order reference). The PSD2-licensed provider confirms payment to the store in real time. No IBAN re-keying, no reference errors, and automatic reconciliation. In the Netherlands, iDEAL already covers most business accounts and is migrating to the European Wero scheme, so the integration should rely on a provider that supports both.

What integration costs in 2026

Several payment initiation providers operate in the Netherlands (Mollie, Adyen, Buckaroo, Stripe, GoCardless). The choice depends on volume, deferred payment needs and ERP integration.

ItemScopeBudget excl. VAT 2026
Scoping and provider selectionfee comparison, contract, PSD2 complianceEUR 600 to 1,200
Checkout integration"Pay by instant transfer" button, bank redirect, returnEUR 1,500 to 3,500
Webhooks and order statusesconfirmation, failure, expiry, refundEUR 800 to 1,800

Payment on due datepayment link sent 3 days before due date, reminderEUR 400 to 1,000
Total integrationEUR 4,000 to 9,000

The 5-week timeline breaks down into one week of scoping and contract, three weeks of development and sandbox testing, and one week of acceptance with a few pilot customers.

Mini case study

Sanne, CFO of the Amsterdam wholesaler, runs the numbers on the 2,000 monthly orders paid by card (average basket EUR 380, average fee 1.5%).

  • Current card fees: 2,000 x 380 x 1.5% = EUR 11,400 per month.
  • Assumption: 70% of those customers switch to instant transfer, i.e. 1,400 orders. Card savings: 1,400 x 380 x 1.5% = EUR 7,980. Cost of the new method: 1,400 x EUR 0.35 = EUR 490. Net gain: EUR 7,490 per month.
  • Cash flow bonus: by sending an instant payment link on the due date to 30-day customers, average days to pay drop from 41 to 33 on EUR 1.14M of monthly invoices, freeing about EUR 300,000 of cash.

FAQ

Is instant transfer really free in 2026?

EU Regulation 2024/886 has required eurozone banks to charge the same as a standard transfer since October 2025. As standard transfers are free at most Dutch banks, instant ones are too, but the initiation provider charges EUR 0.20 to 0.50.

Will business customers accept this payment method?

Yes for smaller firms that pay themselves. Large accounts with approval workflows often prefer 30-day terms, hence the value of a payment link sent on the due date.

Is there a limit per instant transfer?

The regulatory cap was removed, but each bank sets a default limit, often EUR 15,000 to 100,000 for business accounts, which the customer can change.

What if the customer makes a mistake or wants a refund?

The transfer is irrevocable, so there is no chargeback. Refunds are made by a return transfer triggered from the back office, usually in under a minute.

Does Verification of Payee change anything?

Since October 2025, the payer's bank checks that the name matches the IBAN. With payment initiation, IBAN and name are prefilled, so the check passes without friction.
