SEO in 2026: why the same service ranges from 80€ to 30,000€/month
The SEO market is one of the most opaque in digital. An SME may receive 5 quotes for "exactly the same service" ranging from 250K FCFA/month to 4M FCFA/month — a 16× factor. The legitimate question: what justifies the gap? And from what price does it become a scam in one direction (too expensive) or the other (too cheap = no real work)?
This article is the most complete and honest SEO pricing grid I can produce in 2026, based on 30+ quotes compared in 2024-2026 and on what I myself charge via Kolonell.
The 4 SEO pricing models
Model 1 — One-shot audit: one-time service (full SEO audit delivered once), no recurring commitment. For whom: before redesign, before signing consulting, before internal decision. Pricing: 150K-2.5M FCFA (400-8,000€).
Model 2 — Fixed monthly (retainer): monthly subscription with defined scope (X articles, Y backlinks, position tracking, reporting). Dominant agency model. Pricing: 200K-3M FCFA/month (500-9,000€/month).
Model 3 — Performance-based: payment partially indexed on results (positions achieved, traffic gained, conversions). Risky for client (agency may short-term over-optimize), rarely practiced seriously. Pricing: variable, often 30-50% fixed base + 50-70% bonus on KPIs.
Model 4 — Per project / package: package for a precise mission (site redesign with SEO, new activity launch, domain migration). Pricing: 800K-15M FCFA (2,000-45,000€) by scope.

What justifies the price of an SEO service
Direct costs of a serious agency:
- Tool licenses (~150-400€/month/consultant) — Ahrefs (200€), SEMrush (140€), Screaming Frog (180€/year), AccuRanker (60-200€), Surfer SEO or Frase (60-120€), additional licenses if volume.
- Senior consultant salary — France: 50-90K€ gross/year. Senegal: 1.5-4M FCFA gross/month (2,300-6,100€/year). USA: 70-120K$/year.
- Writer cost — 1 SEO article 1,500 optimized words: 80-300€ in France, 25-100€ in Senegal, 100-400$ in USA.
- Qualified backlink cost — Guest post DR 30+: 200-1,500€/link in France, 50-300$ in Senegal (local network), 150-2,000$ in USA.
- Structure costs — Premises, accounting, legal, sales, margin (20-40%).
On these direct costs, here is the calculation for a France senior agency monthly retainer at 6,000€/month:
- 4 articles at 200€ = 800€
- 6 DR 30+ backlinks at 400€ = 2,400€
- 8h senior consultant at 80€/h = 640€
- Allocated tools = 200€
- Total direct costs: 4,040€
- Agency margin (~33%): 1,960€
- Total billed: 6,000€/month — coherent.
If the agency charges 6,000€/month but you see only 2 published articles and no real backlink, the math does not add up — it is a scam.

When it becomes a scam (both directions)
"Too expensive" scam
- France: agency charging >12,000€/month without dedicated named team, without 6+ published articles/month, without 10+ DR 30+ backlinks/month, without detailed Looker Studio reporting.
- Senegal: agency charging >2M FCFA/month without 4+ published articles/month, without 5+ backlinks/month, without shared GSC/GA4 access.
"Too cheap" scam
- France: "SEO agency" charging <800€/month — economically impossible to pay charges + consultant + tools. Either symbolic service or poorly managed offshore subcontracting.
- Senegal: "SEO agency" charging <200K FCFA/month — except symbolic one-shot audit service, impossible to pay a junior part-time consultant + tools.
- Everywhere: "rank 1 guarantee in 30 days for 99€/month" — outright scam. Block and report.
Performance-based: useful or trap?
Performance-based SEO seduces (pay only if it works). Three real traps:
Trap 1 — Short-term over-optimization. The agency pushes aggressive techniques (anchor text over-optimization, PBN backlinks) that work 3-6 months then generate a Google penalty 12 months later. Agency cashed bonuses, you inherit a penalized site.
Trap 2 — Vague KPI definition. "Positions on 10 keywords" — but which? Agency picks 10 easy keywords afterward that it managed to rank. Real business gain: zero.
Trap 3 — Fixed base + disproportionate bonus. "500€/month fixed + 50€ per top 10 keyword" — agency can earn 5,000€/month ranking 90 long-tail keywords with no business value.
When it is honest: business KPIs (organic revenue, organic leads) measured by third party, 60-70% fixed base to cover agency costs, 30-40% bonus on verifiable results.

FAQ
Why does SEO cost less in Senegal than in France?
Cost of living ÷3, social charges ÷4, rents ÷5 in Dakar vs Paris. SaaS tools cost the same everywhere (Ahrefs 200€/month as expensive in Senegal as in France), but human costs pull pricing down. With equivalent method and tools, a Dakar senior SEO consultant charges ÷3 to ÷5 their Paris equivalent.
Do you have to pay more for better quality?
Not linearly. In Senegal, the sweet spot is 600K-1.2M FCFA/month (senior consultant or senior agency). Beyond, marginal gains diminish. In France, the sweet spot is 3,000-6,000€/month. Beyond 9,000€/month, you often pay for brand image more than execution quality.
How long before SEO ROI?
Typical break-even: 9-18 months on the retainer. At 600K FCFA/month over 18 months = 10.8M FCFA invested. You must generate 10.8M FCFA additional net margin via organic over 18 months to break even, i.e. ~600K FCFA/month additional net margin. Achievable for most B2B services SMEs and mid-market e-commerce.
Internal or external SEO: which to choose?
Internal (dedicated employee): cost 1.5-4M FCFA gross/month in Senegal, 3,500-7,000€ gross/month in France, plus charges. Relevant if continuous high SEO volume (big e-commerce, media site). External (agency or freelance): flexible, cheaper if moderate volume, broader expertise.
Can you do SEO without budget?
Yes but slowly. Free tools (GSC, GA4, Screaming Frog 500 URLs, free Ubersuggest), self-training (Ahrefs, Backlinko, Search Engine Journal blogs), 5-15h/week for 6-12 months. Real but long ROI. Relevant for solopreneur or micro-business.
