Hairdresser Google Maps Dakar 2026: 47 weekly bookings from an optimised GBP

Why Google Maps is now the top salesperson of any Dakar salon

When Awa opened her salon in Sicap-Liberté in 2023, she handed out flyers near the mosque on Saturdays and posted 2 photos a month on Instagram. The result: 12 weekly appointments, mostly friends of friends. In January 2026 we audited her Google Business Profile (GBP) — empty, no photos, no precise hours, zero reviews. Six weeks of methodical work later she is at 47 weekly bookings, 31 of which come straight from Google Maps.

In Senegal more than 8 million people use Google Maps monthly. Based on internal data from our beauty clients, around 73 % of "hairdresser + neighbourhood" searches happen on mobile between 6pm and 10pm — exactly when women head home from work and plan their weekend. If your profile isn't in the local pack top 3, you don't exist for those prospects.

Hairdressing is one of the niches where Google Maps performs best in Senegal, for 3 reasons: decisions are fast (under 5 minutes), visuals matter enormously (before/after shots), and geographic proximity is non-negotiable. Nobody travels from Almadies to Pikine for a haircut.

Optimal GBP setup for a hair salon

The classic mistake: rushing the profile in 10 minutes, uploading 2 blurry photos, ignoring attributes. Here is what we deploy for every salon we work with.

Photos: 40 minimum, ideally 80

Google rewards visually active profiles. Bare minimum:

  • 1 cover photo (clean storefront with visible signage)
  • 1 square 250x250 logo
  • 15 interior shots (stations, washing area, waiting room, decor)
  • 20 work shots (before/after cuts, braids, weaves, relaxers, treatments)
  • 4 team photos (Awa and her 2 staff, smiles required)

Upload cadence: 3 new photos per week minimum, gently tagged with a natural keyword (e.g. "African braids in Sicap").

Rich description, 750 full characters

The description must fit: the neighbourhood, 3-4 flagship services with FCFA price ranges, spoken languages (French + Wolof), peak hours, and a clear promise. Example for Awa: "Unisex hair salon in Sicap-Liberté since 2023. Specialties: African braids (15-35k FCFA), hand-sewn weaves (25-50k FCFA), natural hair care, men's cuts (3-5k FCFA). Quick service, family vibe, French and Wolof spoken. WhatsApp booking 7 days a week."

Categories: primary + 3 secondary

CategoryTypeObserved effect
Hair salonPrimaryCore target
Hairdresser for womenSecondaryCaptures "hairdresser women Dakar"
African hairdresserSecondaryCaptures "braids + neighbourhood"

Don't add 10 categories — Google dilutes ranking. Three secondary is the sweet spot.

Attributes and services to enable

Tick: "Unisex salon", "Wheelchair accessible", "Free Wi-Fi", "Wave payments accepted", "Orange Money payments", "WhatsApp booking". List 8 to 15 individual services with prices: "Box braids - 25,000 FCFA", "Hand-sewn weave - 35,000 FCFA", "Classic men's cut - 3,000 FCFA". Each service is an indexable keyword.

Review strategy: the social proof machine

Across 38 Dakar salons we studied in 2025-2026, those with 50+ reviews and a 4.5+ rating capture 4 to 6 times more clicks than profiles with 5-10 reviews. Reviews aren't a bonus — they are the oxygen of ranking.

Request cadence

Ask each client right after the service, while she is checking herself in the mirror and feeling great. Not by email later — via WhatsApp within 2 hours. Response rate jumps from 8 % (email J+2) to 42 % (WhatsApp same day).

WhatsApp message template to send after a service

"Hi Aminata, it was a pleasure styling you today! If you like your braids, it would mean a lot if you left us a quick Google review: [short GBP link]. It takes 30 seconds and helps us welcome more clients like you. Thank you so much - Awa."

Generate the short link from the GBP dashboard (pa.google.com URL). Never send a long URL, click rate collapses.

Handling negative reviews

Reply within 24 hours, always, even to unfair reviews. Format: empathy + name + concrete action. Example: "Hi Fatou, we're really sorry your weave didn't hold as expected. Could you come back this week so we can redo it for free? Call us on 77 596 93 33. - Awa." Google rewards profiles that respond.

Weekly GBP posts, Q&A, attribution

Weekly posts: 2 per week minimum

What works: 1 work photo + short caption + "Book" button linking to WhatsApp. Topics: trendy new style, weekend promo, client testimonial with photo, extended hours reminder (Friday night, Sunday morning for ceremonies).

Pre-filled Q&A section

Anticipate the 8 classic questions: braid pricing, appointment duration, do clients bring their own hair, Wave payment, do you style children, do you do men, parking available, Tabaski hours. Ask and answer yourself from a secondary Google account. Google indexes Q&A as content.

Track every GBP click with ?utm_source=gbp&utm_medium=organic. Without this you don't actually know whether Google Maps drives revenue, and you'll mis-allocate budgets.

FAQ

How long before I see first results on Google Maps?

Early signals (impressions rising, clicks 2-3x) appear within 3 to 5 weeks of optimisation. Top 3 local pack ranking takes 60 to 90 days depending on neighbourhood competition.

Do I need Google Ads on top of GBP?

Not mandatory for a salon. Across 38 salons studied, those combining optimised GBP + 30,000 FCFA / month geo-targeted Google Ads convert 25 % better, but GBP alone already produces strong returns. Start with GBP, add Ads to accelerate.

My salon already has a profile but zero reviews — how do I restart?

Ask 20 past clients via WhatsApp in one week. With a 40 % response rate you collect 8 reviews in one shot. Google reads this spike as a positive signal and the profile climbs mechanically.

Does Google Maps work for salons in the suburbs (Pikine, Guédiawaye)?

Yes, often better than central Dakar. Digital competition is thinner, so reaching the local pack top 3 takes 6 weeks instead of 12. Mariama, salon owner in HLM Grand-Yoff, tripled her bookings in 8 weeks with exactly this playbook.
