Three months later, 14 new mandates were coming from Google Search at an average acquisition cost of 18,500 FCFA — knowing a divorce mandate bills between 350,000 and 1.2 million FCFA.

Google Ads is underused in Senegal because it scares people: a technical account, vocabulary (Search, Display, PMax), CPC pricing that feels opaque. In reality, for consumer services and local B2B, it is often the best-ROI channel on the Senegalese market — ahead of Meta. This guide is the method we apply when an SME starts Google Ads with less than 200,000 FCFA per month.

The Google Search market in Senegal in 2026

Google dominates search in Senegal (> 96 % market share across all platforms). Commercial queries come mostly in French, sometimes in English for export. Mobile accounts for 78 % of queries.

French CPCs on equivalent keywords like "digital agency" are 10 to 25 times more expensive (3 - 8 EUR). The Senegalese market remains a warm ocean where you can buy a lot of attention for little.

Three Google formats and which one to pick

Search — the base for 80 % of SMEs

Commercial intent lives in search. Someone typing "create company website Dakar" is 30 days from buying. Search is almost always the right first format. Start with 5 to 15 ultra-targeted keywords, in exact and phrase, never in broad at first.

Performance Max — powerful but tricky

Performance Max (PMax) is Google's new pivot: one campaign, all inventory (Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail, Maps). Very effective if you have:

  • A site with clean conversion tracking
  • A product feed (e-commerce) or well-defined lead objectives
  • At least 300,000 FCFA per month in budget

Without those three conditions, PMax burns cash on irrelevant inventory. For an SME starting with 100,000 FCFA, skip PMax and stay on Search.

Display and YouTube — to scale, not to start

Display (banners on partner sites) and YouTube (in-stream skippable, 6s bumper) are awareness channels, not direct conversion. Activate them once the brand has recurring traffic and you want to widen the funnel.

First Search campaign method — step by step

Step 1: prepare the landing page

No dedicated page = wasted budget. The landing must exactly answer the search intent, load in under 3 seconds on 3G, have a WhatsApp CTA or form above the fold, and a local phone number clearly visible.

Step 2: build the keyword list

For a Dakar law firm we would start with:

  • cabinet avocat Plateau (exact)
  • procédure divorce amiable Dakar (phrase)

5 to 12 keywords are enough to start. Always add negative keywords: free, job, internship, student, university.

  • 1 campaign per service or business line
  • 1 ad group per keyword theme

Step 4: budget and bidding

Typical mistakes that sink an account

  • Broad-match keywords by default — Google adds off-topic variants, budget evaporates.
  • No negative keywords — without a negative list, you pay for "free", "job", "tutorial".
  • Enabling all Google recommendations — half are Google revenue levers, not yours (auto extensions, search partners, broad match).
  • Single ad per group — no A/B testing possible.
  • Budget too diluted — 5 campaigns at 1,000 FCFA per day learn nothing, better one campaign at 5,000.

Where Google Ads beats Meta

Ideal for: consumer services (lawyer, doctor, school, plumber), local B2B (web design, accountant, business insurance), e-commerce with explicit product searches. Meta still wins for: impulsive visual retail, trendy training, fashion and cosmetics.
