GoCardless vs Stripe SEPA for B2B subscriptions: cutting failed payments

E-commerce

The verdict in three sentences

For a B2B services company billing 1,800 monthly subscriptions and losing 6% of collections to expired or declined cards, SEPA Direct Debit is the most profitable way to push failed payments below 1%. Stripe SEPA (EUR 0.35 per debit) is cheapest if you already run on Stripe, GoCardless (1% + EUR 0.20, capped) has the best retry and mandate tooling, and a direct bank contract is cheapest at high volume but needs real engineering. Choosing between a B2B and a CORE mandate matters as much as choosing the provider.

Why cards create failed payments in B2B

A company card expires every two to three years, changes when an employee leaves, hits its monthly limit or gets stuck in strong customer authentication. On 1,800 subscriptions, 6% failures means 108 payments a month chased by hand. A SEPA mandate is tied to a company IBAN that rarely changes.

Main options for a eurozone business, as 2026 order-of-magnitude figures (standard public pricing, negotiable at volume):

OptionCost per debitCost of a failureTime to cashStrengths
Card via Stripeabout 1.5% + EUR 0.25 (European cards)0 to EUR 15 depending on disputeD+2 to D+7Simple, but cards expire
GoCardless standard1% + EUR 0.20, capped at EUR 4 domestica few euros per failure3 to 5 business daysSmart retries, mandate management, dedicated API
Stripe SEPA Direct DebitEUR 0.35about EUR 7.50 per disputeD+5 to D+14 for new accountsSame dashboard as cards
Direct bank contract (creditor ID + EBICS)EUR 0.10 to 0.40bank return fee EUR 2 to 15D+2 to D+3Cheapest at high volume

The CORE mandate is the standard scheme. The payer can claim a no-questions-asked refund for 8 weeks, and up to 13 months for an unauthorised debit. The B2B mandate removes the 8-week refund right, which protects the merchant. In exchange, the customer must register the mandate with its own bank before the first debit, which slows activation and lowers sign-up rates among small customers.

Most subscription businesses use CORE for the bulk of small plans and keep B2B mandates for strategic accounts. With CORE, abusive refunds stay rare in B2B: under 0.5% of debits are disputed according to field feedback.

Integration: what the switch costs

Moving from card to SEPA means changing the sign-up flow (IBAN capture, e-signed mandate), the customer portal (IBAN updates), invoicing (legal pre-notification at least 14 days ahead, shorter by contract) and return handling (AC04, AM04, MD01 codes...). Kolonell delivers this as a custom application project: 2,500,000 to 4,000,000 FCFA (3,810 to 6,100 EUR) for a simple integration on an existing platform, 4,000,000 to 7,000,000 FCFA (6,100 to 10,670 EUR) with migration of existing customers, a mandate portal and automated dunning.

Mini case study

Sarah, CFO of a B2B services company in Lyon, bills 1,800 subscriptions at EUR 120 excl. VAT per month, EUR 216,000 monthly, all by card.

You are :
  • Current card fees: 1,800 × (1.5% × EUR 120 + EUR 0.25) = 1,800 × EUR 2.05 = EUR 3,690 per month.
  • Failed payments at 6%: 108 payments, EUR 12,960 collected late, about 15% never recovered, so EUR 1,944 lost per month.
  • With Stripe SEPA: 1,800 × EUR 0.35 = EUR 630 per month. With GoCardless: 1,800 × (1% × EUR 120 + EUR 0.20) = EUR 2,520 per month.
  • If failures drop to 0.8%, or 14 debits, permanent losses fall to about EUR 250 a month.
  • Monthly gain with Stripe SEPA: (3,690 + 1,944) − (630 + 250) = EUR 4,754. An integration at 6,100 EUR pays back in under two months.

FAQ

Do we need our own creditor identifier for GoCardless or Stripe?

No, these providers collect under their own creditor ID. You only need one for a direct bank contract, and it is free to obtain through your bank within a few days.

How many customers will switch to direct debit?

On an existing B2B base, a well-run migration campaign converts 40 to 70% of customers in three months. Offering SEPA by default at sign-up pushes new-customer adoption above 80%.

Does SEPA work outside France?

Yes, across the 36 SEPA countries, in euros. UK customers need Bacs, which GoCardless also handles. Swiss customers paying in CHF need a local scheme.

What is the mandatory pre-notification period?

The default is 14 calendar days before the debit. It can be shortened, for example to 2 days, if your contract or terms say so.

Can we combine cards and SEPA?

Yes, and it is recommended. Cards stay useful for non-SEPA customers or instant activation, while SEPA takes over recurring billing from month two.
