2026 francophone Africa tech VC: a consolidating ecosystem

Francophone Africa (Senegal, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, francophone Egypt, DRC) receives 18-25% of continental VC deals in 2026, but only 8-12% of capital (vs 65-75% for Big 4: Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt).

Three reasons: more fragmented markets (multiple currencies CFA/MAD/TND), younger seed ecosystem, fewer local funds. But 2024-2026 sees a new generation of francophone-focused funds emerging.

Here is the active 2026 top 20.

How to approach a 2026 VC

Step 1: warm intro via portfolio founder. Open Crunchbase/LinkedIn, identify 3-5 founders in VC portfolio, ask warm intro from 1-2 of them. VC response rate on warm intro: 75-90%. On cold email: 5-15%.

Step 2: qualify fit upfront. Did VC invest in your stage? Sector? Geography? If no on 3: skip. Don't waste time on misaligned funds.

Step 3: partner meeting, not associate. Always aim for decision-maker partner. Associates filter: relevant for pre-qualification, but decision-maker = partner.

Step 4: due diligence 6-12 weeks. Data room (financials, customer contracts, team), customer references, founder ex-colleagues references, 5-year financial model, cohort projections.

FAQ

How many VCs to approach for Series A?

Rule: 40-80 VCs contacted, 15-25 take meeting, 5-10 show serious interest, 1-2 lead investor signs term sheet. Conversion: 2-5% from cold to closing.

Lead investor needed or club deal possible?

2026: lead investor remains standard for Series A+ (40-70% of ticket). Lead negotiates term sheet, drives due diligence, takes board seat. Club deal possible at seed (3-8 angels/seed funds equal ticket).

Francophone or anglophone VC: which to prioritize?

If your market is francophone (Senegal, IC, Cameroon, Morocco): francophone VCs facilitate market understanding. If targeting anglophone Big 4 (Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt): anglophone VCs more relevant. Ideal mix: 60% francophone + 40% anglophone pan-African.

Average Series A VC dilution?

2026 Africa standard: 15-22% for $3-8M Series A, 20-28% for $8-15M Series A. Above 30%: valuation too low, negotiate or wait 6-12 months extra traction.

Sign NDA to send pitch deck?

No in 2026. No serious VC signs NDA to review deck (volume too high, legal risk). If you insist on NDA: you cut 95% of funds. Deck must tease without revealing secret sauce.
