EU Website Hosting under GDPR: Choosing a Provider for Your Business Site in Dublin (2026)

The verdict in three sentences

For a Dublin SME working with German or French corporate buyers, website hosting is chosen first on legal criteria: data location inside the EU, exposure to the US Cloud Act and a signed GDPR data processing agreement. Price gaps are modest at SME scale: 5 to 20 EUR a month on shared hosting, 15 to 80 EUR on a VPS, 150 to 600 EUR on managed cloud. A European provider such as OVHcloud, Scaleway or Hetzner covers most client requirements, and US clouds in the Dublin region remain an option if your contracts explicitly accept them.

Why your EU clients ask the question

Large German and French buyers increasingly send supplier questionnaires asking where data collected by your web forms is hosted, who can access it and under which jurisdiction. Your data processing agreement (Article 28 GDPR) must list your hosting providers. A US provider, even with servers in Dublin, remains subject to the Cloud Act, which lets US authorities request access to data. The EU-US Data Privacy Framework has provided a legal basis for transfers since 2023, but some buyers still require a provider governed by EU law. Ireland matters here: the Data Protection Commission in Dublin is the lead regulator for many large tech firms and is closely watched.

Provider comparison for a Dublin SME

Prices are 2026 orders of magnitude for a business site of 50 to 200 pages with forms and 10,000 to 50,000 visits a month.

Before signing, check four points in the contract: the list of sub-processors, where backups are stored (often forgotten), the breach notification procedure within 72 hours and the terms for getting your data back at the end of the contract.

Mini case study

Illustration: Aoife, IT lead at a 120-employee engineering services SME in Dublin, sees her main German client, worth 1,200,000 EUR in annual revenue, require hosting under EU law. She moves from a 15 EUR a month shared plan with a US provider to a managed European cloud at 300 EUR a month. The extra annual cost is (300 minus 15) x 12 = 3,420 EUR, or 0.29 % of the revenue from that client. The compliance file is cleared within a week.

You are :

Is a US provider with servers in Dublin GDPR-compliant?

It can be, especially if the company is certified under the Data Privacy Framework and a data processing agreement is signed. The Cloud Act risk remains, and roughly 1 in 3 German industrial buyers excludes it contractually according to IT leads.

Do we need a certified sovereign cloud?

Only for sensitive data or public-sector work. These offers usually cost over 1,000 EUR a month and are overkill for a standard business site.

What should the record of processing include for the website?

Each form (contact, quote, job application) with its purpose, its retention period, typically 3 years for a prospect, and the hosting provider involved. GDPR fines can reach 4 % of worldwide turnover.

How much does a hosting migration cost?

For a 50 to 200 page site, allow 1 to 3 days of work and under 30 minutes of downtime if DNS is prepared. At Kolonell, the switch is included in managed hosting from 25,000 FCFA a month (about 40 EUR).

Which SLA should we require?

99.9 % means about 8 hours 45 minutes of downtime a year, fine for a brochure site. Aim for 99.95 % or more with contractual penalties if the site runs a client area.

Let's scope your project. Send us your client requirements (supplier questionnaire, GDPR clauses), your traffic and your forms, and we will recommend a European hosting architecture, a monthly budget and a zero-downtime migration plan. Detailed quote within 48 h. WhatsApp +221 77 596 93 33.
