EU GDPR-Compliant Hosting for a Business Website: Berlin SME Guide

The verdict in three sentences

As soon as a website collects data through forms and a client portal, hosting becomes a compliance decision as much as a performance one. For an SME in Berlin, a managed VPS from a European provider (OVHcloud, Scaleway, Hetzner) at EUR 40 to 150 a month, or a PaaS configured in an EU region, covers most needs in 2026. US clouds remain an option, but they require you to document transfers outside the EU and accept exposure to extraterritorial laws.

The four hosting models and their 2026 prices

The right choice depends on traffic, data sensitivity and in-house resources. A brochure site with 2,000 visits a month does not have the same needs as a client portal where users upload supporting documents.

GDPR: what changes between a European host and a US cloud

GDPR does not ban US providers. Since the 2023 EU-US Data Privacy Framework, transfers to certified companies are allowed, but the framework is contested and could be struck down like its predecessors. A European subsidiary of a US group also remains subject to the CLOUD Act. For a client portal holding identity or health data, a host under European law simplifies your record of processing and your answers to large corporate clients.

99.9% or 99.95% SLA: what is the difference worth?

A 99.9% SLA allows about 8 h 45 of downtime a year, against 4 h 20 for 99.95%. For a brochure site, the gap is negligible. For a client portal used continuously, it is justified if every hour of outage triggers support calls. Check what the contract provides if the SLA is missed: often just a credit of 5 to 10% of the monthly bill.

Mini case study

Sophie, managing director of a 25-person HR consultancy in Berlin, launches a site with forms and a client portal where 400 companies upload documents. She compares a US cloud (EUR 110 a month in resources plus EUR 1,500 for a legal transfer assessment) with a managed VPS from a European host (EUR 55 a month), both with managed services at EUR 250 a month. Over 3 years, the first option costs EUR 5,460 before managed services, plus EUR 9,000 of equivalent managed services, or EUR 14,460. The second costs EUR 1,980 plus EUR 9,000, or EUR 10,980, and removes the transfer assessment. She saves EUR 3,480 and answers her clients' compliance questionnaires more easily.

FAQ

How much does SME website hosting cost in the EU in 2026?

EUR 5 to 15 a month for shared, EUR 40 to 150 for a managed VPS and EUR 20 to 300 for PaaS. Managed services add EUR 150 to 600 excl. VAT a month.

Is hosting on AWS or Azure GDPR-compliant?

It can be, with an EU region, a data processing agreement and documented transfers. That usually takes EUR 1,000 to 2,000 of legal support.

OVHcloud, Scaleway or Hetzner for a client portal?

All three work. A 4 vCPU, 8 GB VPS costs EUR 30 to 60 a month with any of them; choose based on the managed services (database, object storage) you need.

Do we need a 99.95% SLA?

Only if the client portal is critical. The gain is about 4 h 25 more availability per year compared with 99.9%.

Are managed services essential?

For an SME without in-house developers, in practice yes: updates, tested backups and monitoring for EUR 150 to 600 a month cost less than a single security incident.

Let's scope your project. We recommend the right hosting for your forms and client portal, EUR 40 to 600 excl. VAT a month including managed services, set up within 2 weeks. Detailed quote within 48 h. WhatsApp +221 77 596 93 33.
