The verdict in three sentences
E-invoicing is becoming the standard in France: mandatory reception for all businesses since September 1, 2026, mandatory issuance for large companies and mid-caps from that date, then for SMEs and micro-businesses from September 1, 2027. A B2B online store must therefore connect its back office to an approved platform through a connector, for a budget of 2,000 to 8,000 EUR excl. VAT, then pay 0.10 to 0.50 EUR per invoice depending on volume. The most common trap is mixed sales: B2B invoices go out in a structured format, while consumer sales fall under e-reporting.
What actually changes for a B2B store
A PDF sent by email will no longer be a valid invoice between VAT-registered businesses established in France. The invoice must be issued in a structured format (Factur-X, UBL or CII), sent through an approved platform and include new mentions: the customer's SIREN number, the delivery address if different, the nature of the transaction (goods, services or mixed) and the VAT-on-debits option where relevant.
For an online store, this touches three areas: the account creation form (collect and check the SIREN), the invoicing engine (generate the right format with the right mentions) and the status flow (submitted, rejected, paid), which the platform returns and which should appear in the customer area.
| Deadline | Who is affected | Obligation |
|---|---|---|
| September 1, 2026 | All businesses | Receiving electronic invoices |
| September 1, 2026 | Large companies and mid-caps | Issuing invoices and e-reporting |
| September 1, 2027 | SMEs and micro-businesses | Issuing invoices and e-reporting |
| From the mandate date | B2C and international sales | Transmitting sales data (e-reporting) |
| From the mandate date | Service payments received | E-reporting of payment data |
What compliance costs
The budget depends on your e-commerce platform and invoicing software. Stores on Shopify, PrestaShop or WooCommerce often use an app or connector module. Custom sites or stores tied to an ERP need API development.
| Item | Standard store (existing module) | Custom store or ERP | 2026 ballpark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Invoicing flow audit | 1 day | 2 to 4 days | 600 to 2,400 EUR |
| Connector to the approved platform | Module setup | API development | 1,000 to 5,000 EUR |
| Customer SIREN collection and check | Field and validation | Customer base sync | 300 to 1,500 EUR |
| B2B vs B2C split in checkout | Simple rule | Rules per channel and country | 300 to 1,200 EUR |
| Status display in customer area | Optional | Recommended | 500 to 2,000 EUR |
| Approved platform subscription | 20 to 80 EUR per month | 100 to 400 EUR per month | By volume |
| Cost per invoice | 0.25 to 0.50 EUR | 0.10 to 0.25 EUR | Volume-based |
For most SME B2B stores, total compliance work fits between 2,000 and 8,000 EUR excl. VAT, before subscription. The penalties make waiting expensive: 15 EUR per invoice not issued electronically and 250 EUR per e-reporting failure, each capped at 15,000 EUR per year.
Foreign sellers shipping to French businesses
Sellers not established in France are not required to issue French e-invoices, but their French customers must report those purchases through e-reporting, and many buyers' accounts payable teams now ask for Factur-X invoices to automate processing. In practice, a foreign B2B store that sells regularly in France gains from offering a structured invoice: it shortens payment approval and avoids manual re-entry on the buyer's side.
For merchants established in France with mixed sales, the rule to code looks simple: if the customer provided a SIREN and buys for business use, the invoice goes through the platform electronically; otherwise the sale is aggregated in e-reporting. Edge cases (a consumer account later asking for a company invoice, a foreign buyer without a SIREN) must be settled during the audit, not discovered in production.

Need a professional website?
Kolonell builds websites that attract clients, optimized for the Sénégalese market. Free quote in 2 minutes.
Thomas is e-commerce manager at an SME selling packaging supplies online near Nantes (illustrative persona). His store issues 1,400 B2B invoices a month and records 600 B2C sales. Today an accountant spends 3 days a month sending, chasing and reconciling PDFs, about 24 hours at 40 EUR loaded: 960 EUR per month.
Compliance costs 5,500 EUR, the subscription 90 EUR a month and 1,400 invoices at 0.20 EUR add 280 EUR. Recurring cost: 370 EUR a month. If the platform and automatic statuses halve processing time, the saving is 480 EUR a month, a net gain of 110 EUR monthly. The real benefit lies elsewhere: with a paid status reported automatically, average payment time drops from 52 to 45 days on 180,000 EUR of monthly billing, freeing about 42,000 EUR of cash.
FAQ
Must my store be ready in September 2026 if I am an SME?
For reception, yes: you must have chosen an approved platform to receive supplier invoices since September 1, 2026. For issuance, the SME deadline is September 1, 2027, but a project takes 2 to 4 months.
Is a stamped PDF still valid?
Not between VAT-registered businesses established in France once the mandate applies. Factur-X, a hybrid PDF plus XML format, stays human-readable while being structured, which eases the transition.
Do I need to change e-commerce platform?
Rarely. Shopify, PrestaShop and WooCommerce have connector modules at 20 to 80 EUR per month. Only custom sites need development, often 2,000 to 5,000 EUR.
How are sales to foreign customers handled?
Sales to foreign businesses do not go through French e-invoicing but fall under e-reporting. The connector must classify each sale by country and customer status.
What does each invoice cost?
Approved platforms usually charge 0.10 to 0.50 EUR per invoice, with volume tiers. At 1,000 invoices a month, expect 150 to 350 EUR monthly including subscription.
