Changing domain during a website redesign in Toronto: 301 redirect costs and SEO risks in 2026

SEO

The verdict in three sentences

Changing domain during a redesign is the riskiest SEO project a mid-sized company can launch: even when well prepared, it causes a temporary 10 to 30% drop in organic traffic for 8 to 12 weeks. A 301 redirect plan and SEO QA cost EUR 3,000 to 7,000 (about USD 3,200 to 7,500) for roughly 4,500 indexed URLs. Without that preparation, losses can exceed 50% and last six months or more, with a commercial cost in the tens of thousands.

What a well-prepared migration costs

The marketing director of a company merging three brands under a new domain is really running three migrations at once. Each old site has its ranking pages, backlinks and history. The job is to let nothing fall between the three.

StepEffort2026 cost (EUR)Deliverable
URL inventory (crawl, Search Console, analytics, backlinks)2 to 3 days800 to 1,500Master file of 4,500 URLs with traffic and links
One-to-one mapping old to new3 to 5 days1,000 to 2,200Mapping table validated by business teams
Server rules and staging tests1 to 2 days400 to 900Rules file, zero redirect chains
Pre-launch SEO QA1 to 2 days400 to 900Tags, canonicals, hreflang, sitemap, robots
Switch-over, change of address tool, day 1 to 7 monitoring1 day300 to 700Search Console notice for all 3 domains
12-week follow-up and fixes1 to 2 days100 to 800Weekly report on 404 errors and rankings
Total9 to 15 days3,000 to 7,000Documented migration

This budget comes on top of the redesign itself. It must be written into the brief from day one, not discovered two weeks before launch.

The cost of not preparing, in figures

In our example, organic search drives 38% of total traffic. Assume 60,000 organic visits a month, a 1.2% conversion rate to contact requests and an average sales opportunity value of EUR 900.

ScenarioOrganic traffic lossDurationLeads lostPipeline value lost (estimate)

Prepared migration, high loss30%12 weeks648EUR 583,200

Chains of 3 or more redirects15 to 20% extra4 to 8 weeks200 to 400Slower indexing

Pipeline is not revenue, but even at a 15% close rate, the unprepared scenario wipes out nearly EUR 290,000 of potential sales. EUR 7,000 of preparation weighs little.

Rules that protect your traffic

Redirect each URL to its closest equivalent page, never mass-redirect to the home page: Google treats those as soft 404 errors. Keep redirects live for at least 12 months, ideally indefinitely, and keep ownership of the three old domains so no third party buys them. Contact the 20 to 50 sites sending your strongest backlinks and ask them to update their links. Finally, avoid changing URL structure, content and domain all at once if you can stagger them: each simultaneous change adds variables when traffic drops.

Sarah, marketing director of a 600-employee manufacturer near Toronto, brings three brands under a single domain. She budgets EUR 6,200 for the inventory of 4,500 URLs, mapping and follow-up. After 10 weeks, the drop stabilises at 14% instead of the 50% seen at a competitor during an unprepared migration. On 60,000 monthly visits, the 36-point gap means about 21,600 visits preserved each month, or nearly 260 leads protected every month. At EUR 900 per opportunity, the investment is covered by the first 7 leads.

FAQ

How long should 301 redirects stay in place?

Google recommends at least one year, but we advise keeping them indefinitely. The cost is close to zero, a few euros a year for domain renewal.

Is traffic loss unavoidable?

A 10 to 30% drop for 8 to 12 weeks is common even with a clean migration. In the best cases, traffic returns to its initial level within 3 months, then exceeds it thanks to consolidated authority.

Should all three domains move on the same day?

Not necessarily. Migrating the smallest site first and the other two 3 to 4 weeks later lets you validate the process on 10 to 20% of traffic.

Do 301 redirects pass backlink value?

Yes, a clean 301 passes most of the authority. Updating the 20 to 50 strongest links directly is still better.

Which monitoring tools should we use?

Search Console for the three old domains and the new one, a crawler to check the 4,500 URLs, and weekly tracking of 100 to 300 priority keywords.
