The verdict in three sentences

An app that optimizes route order adds 20 to 30 % more deliveries per rider per day with not a litre of extra fuel. Photo proof-of-delivery and reconciled COD kill disputes and cash gaps. Cost per delivery falls, capacity rises: this is the last-mile profit lever.

More drops, less fuel

The core is route optimization: from the day's addresses it computes the shortest order and assigns each rider to a zone. The rider follows the route on a mobile app that works offline, takes a photo at each handover, and collects COD (cash on delivery).

Reconciled COD and cost per delivery

Cash on delivery remains dominant, but it is also the first source of leakage. The app matches each collection to a parcel, and the rider remits at day-end an amount the system knows to the cedi. Combined with mobile money, COD can migrate to MoMo, cutting handled cash further.

Kwame runs a fleet of 10 riders in Accra, 18 drops/day each, i.e. 180 deliveries at GHS 18. With optimization each rider reaches 24 drops: the fleet delivers 240 parcels/day, +33 %, with no new hires. At GHS 18 service margin that is GHS 1,080 more per day, over GHS 27,000 a month. The app pays for itself in under six weeks.

FAQ

Does the app work with no signal in poorly covered zones? Yes: route, addresses and proofs of delivery are stored locally and sync once signal returns. The rider is never blocked.

How does proof-of-delivery avoid disputes? Every handover is timestamped and geo-tagged with a photo (parcel, door, or signature). In a dispute the proof is irrefutable and settles it in seconds.

Is COD really secure? Yes: the expected amount is known per parcel, the app totals the cash to remit and flags any gap the same day, against a usual 2 to 5 % leakage.

Can the end customer track their delivery? Yes, via a live tracking link with ETA, cutting support calls and failed deliveries.

How many riders can it manage? From 3 to several hundred; zone assignment and optimization stay performant at scale.
