Dakar events ticketing: a digitalized market in 2026

The Senegal event ticketing market weighs roughly 12-18 billion FCFA / year in 2026: concerts (Wally Seck, Youssou N'Dour, Booba on tour, festivals), theater (Daniel Sorano, Kaddu Yaraax Company), comedy (one-man shows), sports events (Senegalese wrestling, BAL basketball), paid conferences.

Historical players: Yengo Tickets, Yamarou Tickets, physical sales (Comm'on, kiosks). Pain point: queues, cash payment, easily counterfeited paper tickets, no QR scan.

The DakarTickets project, web + app platform launched August 2024, contacted me in April 2024 for design. 12 months later: 185,000 tickets sold, 38 partner organizers, 195 M FCFA commission revenue, 2.4 billion FCFA GMV. Here is the mechanism.

H2: QR code + entry scan

Generation. Each ticket purchased receives a unique QR (UUID + HMAC signature) sent by WhatsApp + email. Downloadable PDF. Format: Apple Wallet + Google Pay compatible.

Entry scan. Mobile app for organizers (iOS + Android) scanning QR via camera. Offline verification (scanner syncs sold tickets at evening start, works without Internet). Real-time duplicate detection.

Anti-fraud. HMAC prevents counterfeiting (impossible to generate valid QR without server key). Optional bearer photo for premium events.

H2: Multi-channel payment

Wave. 65% of transactions in Senegal. Wave Business API integration, payment in 8 seconds. Wave commission: 1.5%.

Orange Money. 18% of transactions. Orange Senegal API. Commission: 2%.

Stripe / bank card. 12% (diaspora). Stripe commission: 2.9% + 0.30 USD.

Cash on-site (for general public concerts). 5%. Kiosk partner collects, takes 3% commission, remits to DakarTickets.

H2: Dynamic pricing + tiers

Organizers configure:

  • Early bird (D-60 to D-30): -25%
  • Normal rate (D-30 to D-7): reference price
  • Late (D-7 to D-1): +15%
  • Door: +25% (advance purchase incentive)
  • VIP: x3-5 (gold circle, lounge access, meet & greet)
  • Numbered gold circle: x2-3

Example Wally Seck concert Grand Théâtre 2,500 seats: normal 25 KFCFA, early 18.5 KFCFA, late 28.5 KFCFA, VIP 75 KFCFA, gold circle 50 KFCFA. Concert GMV: ~75-95 M FCFA.

H2: Commission + venue partnerships

H2: Investments

ItemUpfrontMonthly recurring
Web platform + organizer app development18,000,000 to 28,000,000 FCFA1,200,000 FCFA
Hosting (scaling for sales peaks)800,000 FCFA480,000 FCFA
Wave + Orange + Stripe integrations3,500,000 FCFA280,000 FCFA
Team (3 people: tech + commercial + support)800,000 FCFA recruitment3,200,000 FCFA
Marketing (Meta + influencers + venue relations)2,500,000 FCFA1,800,000 FCFA
Venue partnership deposits8,000,000 FCFA

Upfront investment: 33-43 M FCFA. Monthly recurring: 7 M FCFA. For 185,000 tickets × 13 KFCFA average = 2.4 billion GMV × 6.5% average commission = 156 M FCFA + 1 KFCFA / ticket service fee (185 M / 5) = 195 M FCFA / year. Net margin: 35-42% = 68-82 M FCFA / year.

FAQ

Why replace Yengo / Yamarou?

These historical players have aging UX (no native mobile app, sometimes buggy Wave payment, manual entry scan). A new platform with reliable QR + instant payment + real-time organizer dashboard wins shares quickly.

How much does platform development cost?

Web (Next.js + Postgres): 12-18 M FCFA. Organizer scanner app (Flutter or React Native): 6-10 M FCFA. Payment integrations: 3.5 M FCFA. Total MVP: 22-32 M FCFA.

How to convince a venue to sign exclusive?

Offer: 0% commission for the venue, its own admin interface, automated fiscal reporting, cash advance (D+2 vs D+15 from competition), counterfeit liability assumed. 2-5 M FCFA deposit helps credibility.

What if the event is canceled?

Automatic refund process in 5 business days (instant Wave, card 5d). DakarTickets keeps 1% service fee. Paid Wave/Stripe fees are non-recoverable — borne by organizer (contractual clause).

How many tickets to sell to be profitable?

Break-even: ~80,000 tickets / year with 13 KFCFA average basket and 6.5% commission. From 150,000 tickets, net margins 35-45% = very profitable activity.
