Senegal marketplace / SaaS development: a specialized market in 2026

Developing complex platforms (e-commerce marketplaces, vertical SaaS, B2B platforms) requires multidisciplinary teams (front, back, infra, product). In Senegal, few players have capacity to deliver projects > 100 M FCFA. Annual market: ~5-12 billion FCFA.

Build Studio Dakar, founded 2019, contacted me in April 2024. 5 projects/year. Fourteen months later: 14 projects delivered, 580 M FCFA revenue. Here is the mechanism.

Frontend. Next.js 14 + TypeScript + Tailwind. SSR/SSG for SEO + perf. Framer Motion for animations.

Backend. Next.js API routes + Prisma + PostgreSQL Neon. For most projects. For projects > 50K active users: custom Node.js (Fastify, NestJS).

Auth. Custom JWT or NextAuth (by complexity). For B2B: SSO (SAML, OIDC).

Payments. Stripe + PayDunya (Wave, OM, Free Money). For high volumes: direct Wave Business API integration.

Storage. AWS S3 or Cloudflare R2.

Hosting. Vercel (frontend), Railway/Render (backend + DB), AWS if enterprise project.

Monitoring. Sentry (errors), Datadog or Logflare (logs), Plausible (privacy analytics).

H2: Project pricing

  • Simple e-commerce marketplace (~5 categories, 50 sellers): 18-45 M FCFA
  • Medium e-commerce marketplace: 45-95 M FCFA
  • Complex e-commerce marketplace (multi-country, multi-currency): 95-280 M FCFA
  • Vertical B2B SaaS MVP: 22-65 M FCFA
  • Mature B2B SaaS with multi-tenant: 65-180 M FCFA
  • B2B platform (catalog, RFQ, procurement): 38-120 M FCFA

Post-delivery maintenance: 12-25% of project cost / year.

Upfront investment: 9.6 M FCFA. Annual recurring: 446 M FCFA. For 14 projects × 41 M FCFA average basket + maintenance ~80 M FCFA = 660 M FCFA / year. Net margin 22-30% = 145-200 M FCFA / year.

FAQ

How long to develop a marketplace?

Simple: 4-6 months. Medium: 6-12 months. Complex (multi-country, scaling marketplaces): 12-22 months. Required team: 3-12 developers by complexity.

Next.js + Prisma stack vs others?

Next.js + Prisma: excellent productivity/performance ratio for most projects. Alternatives: Rails (productivity), Django (Python ecosystem), Laravel (PHP, many Senegal devs know). Case-by-case evaluation.

Should you develop your own marketplace or use existing platform (Shopify, WooCommerce)?

For mono-brand e-commerce: Shopify or WooCommerce largely sufficient. For multi-vendor marketplace with local specificities: custom development recommended.

Dakar developer 2026 hourly rate?

Junior: 8-15 KFCFA/h or 1.8-3 M FCFA/month. Mid: 15-28 KFCFA/h or 3.5-6 M FCFA/month. Senior: 28-55 KFCFA/h or 6-12 M FCFA/month. Lead: 40-85 KFCFA/h or 10-22 M FCFA/month.

Agile or waterfall methodology?

2026 standard: agile (2-week sprints, client demos). Waterfall reserved for highly regulated sectors (banking, defense). For startups: agile with successive MVPs.
