The verdict in three sentences
If you already sell on WhatsApp or Instagram in Mbour, an online store saves time on every order and opens you up to customers in Dakar, Thiès and the diaspora. The entry cost is low, 15,000 to 30,000 FCFA a month (about 23 to 46 EUR) for a hosted store, but most stores fail for lack of method: an empty catalogue, blurry photos, badly priced delivery. A 20-hour practical course is enough to open a store that runs, with Wave and Orange Money payments connected.
WhatsApp, Instagram or an online store: what do you really gain?
On the Petite-Côte, selling happens mostly through WhatsApp statuses and Instagram stories. It works to get started, then it plateaus: you answer the price question ten times a day, you forget orders, and tourists or the diaspora find nothing on Google.
| Criterion | WhatsApp / Instagram only | Online store + WhatsApp |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost (2026) | 0 FCFA apart from data plan | 15,000 to 30,000 FCFA hosting |
| Time spent per order | 15 to 25 min of messages | 3 to 5 min, price and stock displayed |
| Google visibility | Almost none | Indexed product pages |
| Payment | Wave or OM by hand, screenshots | Wave, Orange Money and card built in |
| Diaspora customers | Hard, no card payment | Card payment and delivery to a relative |
| Order tracking | Memory and notebook | Dashboard, status per order |
| Realistic capacity | 5 to 10 orders a day | 20 to 50 orders a day |
The store does not replace WhatsApp, it complements it: the customer browses the catalogue, chooses, pays, and WhatsApp remains the channel for confirmation and delivery.
What a working store in Mbour costs in 2026
Before training, cost out the real monthly budget. Here are the items to plan for a small fashion, cosmetics or craft store.
| Item | Indicative 2026 cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Platform or hosting | 15,000 to 30,000 FCFA/month | Depending on product count and options |
| .sn or .com domain name | 10,000 to 25,000 FCFA/year | Optional at first |
| Wave payment fees | 1% per transaction | Orange Money: 1 to 2% depending on contract |
| Local delivery Mbour, Saly, Somone | 1,000 to 2,500 FCFA per parcel | Motorbike courier, built into price or billed |
| Shipping to Dakar | 2,500 to 4,000 FCFA | Bus or carrier, 24 to 48 h |
| Product photos | 0 to 50,000 FCFA | Phone + light background, or a photographer once |
| Launch advertising | 20,000 to 60,000 FCFA/month | Meta Ads targeting Mbour, Thiès, Dakar |
So count 45,000 to 100,000 FCFA a month in total for an active store, advertising included. At a margin of 4,000 FCFA per item, you need 12 to 25 sales a month to cover these costs.
Training: the options compared
| Option | 2026 price | Duration | What is missing or included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free YouTube tutorials | 0 FCFA | Unlimited | Foreign platforms, no Wave or local delivery |
| In-person workshop in Mbour or Thiès | 50,000 to 150,000 FCFA | 1 to 2 days | No follow-up after launch |
| Contractor who builds the store for you | 250,000 to 800,000 FCFA | 2 to 4 weeks | You do not know how to run it afterwards |
| Kolonell course Online store: create, stock and run it | 75,000 FCFA (about 115 EUR) | 20 h online | Platform, 20 products live, payment, delivery, weekly steering |
| Full E-commerce and online selling track (5 levels) | 350,000 FCFA instead of 450,000 | About 120 h | From WhatsApp selling to running an e-commerce business |
The course Online store: create it, stock it and keep it running is level 3 Advanced of the E-commerce and online selling track. It is taught in French. By the end, your store is open with 20 products, mobile money payment connected and your first orders tracked in a simple sheet. If you are a complete beginner, levels 1 and 2 of the track (selling on WhatsApp, e-commerce basics in Senegal) are a better fit.

Fatou, 31, makes wax bags and dresses in Mbour. She sells about 25 pieces a month on Instagram, at an average margin of 4,500 FCFA, i.e. 112,500 FCFA of monthly margin. She takes the course (75,000 FCFA, paid with Orange Money) and opens her store: 22,000 FCFA of hosting, 30,000 FCFA of advertising a month. Three months later, with customers in Dakar and two diaspora orders a week, she sells 55 pieces a month.
Calculation: 55 × 4,500 = 247,500 FCFA of margin, minus 52,000 FCFA of costs, leaves 195,500 FCFA. The gain is 83,000 FCFA a month compared with before: the course pays for itself in just under a month. This figure is an illustration; sales depend on the product, the photos and consistency.
FAQ
Do I need to code to create my store?
No. The course uses no-code platforms set up in a few hours. You need to be comfortable with a smartphone and a computer, and plan about 3 h a week for 6 to 7 weeks to complete the 20 h.
How many products do I need to open?
Twenty well-photographed products are enough to start. A store with 5 products inspires little trust, and neither does one with 200 badly filled listings.
Can I accept Wave and Orange Money directly in the store?
Yes, with fees of about 1% for Wave and 1 to 2% for Orange Money in 2026. The course also shows how to accept bank cards for the diaspora.
How do I handle delivery to Saly, Somone or Dakar?
Plan 1,000 to 2,500 FCFA for the Petite-Côte and 2,500 to 4,000 FCFA to Dakar. You learn to set zones and rates in the store so you never lose your margin.
How do I pay for the course?
By Wave or Orange Money: 75,000 FCFA for this level, or 350,000 FCFA for the 5 levels of the track instead of 450,000. A Kolonell Academy certificate is issued at the end.
