The verdict in three sentences
For a Berlin manufacturer where 45 to 60% of B2B visits now come from mobile, a slow catalogue site drives buyers away before they ever reach the quote form. A Core Web Vitals audit at 2,000 to 6,000 EUR, followed by 4,000 to 15,000 EUR of fixes, usually pays for itself within a quarter once the site generates around twenty qualified enquiries a month. In most cases the priority is product images and third-party scripts, long before a full rebuild.
The Google thresholds to hit in 2026
Google assesses a site on the 75th percentile of real visits measured by Chrome (CrUX data over a rolling 28 days). In other words, if a quarter of your mobile visitors wait more than 2.5 seconds, the page counts as slow, even if it loads instantly on your office desktop.
| Metric | What it measures | Good | Needs improvement | Poor | Typical cause on a manufacturer site |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LCP | Rendering of the largest element | ≤ 2.5 s | 2.5 to 4 s | > 4 s | 3 MB machine photo, homepage slider |
| INP | Responsiveness to clicks and filters | ≤ 200 ms | 200 to 500 ms | > 500 ms | Heavy JavaScript catalogue filters and configurator |
| CLS | Visual stability | ≤ 0.1 | 0.1 to 0.25 | > 0.25 | Cookie banner, web fonts, images without dimensions |
| TTFB (indicative) | Server response time | ≤ 0.8 s | 0.8 to 1.8 s | > 1.8 s | Shared hosting, CMS without caching |
| Mobile page weight (indicative) | Data downloaded | < 1.5 MB | 1.5 to 3 MB | > 3 MB | Autoplay videos, embedded PDFs |
Manufacturer sites carry specific handicaps: catalogues with hundreds of SKUs, downloadable datasheets, demo videos, chat widgets, trade fair tags piled up in Google Tag Manager over the years. A typical audit finds 15 to 25 third-party scripts loading on every page, half of which nobody uses anymore.
German manufacturers have one more reason to act now. The BFSG (Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz), in force since June 2025, imposes accessibility requirements on consumer-facing digital services such as online shops. A pure B2B catalogue is often outside its scope, but many manufacturers also sell spare parts or accessories to consumers online. Combining the performance audit with an accessibility check avoids paying twice for the same template work.
What the audit and fixes cost in Berlin
The figures below are 2026 market estimates for an experienced agency or senior freelancer in Germany, excluding VAT. They vary with the number of templates and the stack (WordPress, TYPO3, Shopware, custom build).
| Service | Scope | 2026 price (EUR, excl. VAT) | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quick audit | Lighthouse and CrUX on 10 key pages, prioritised list | 2,000 to 3,000 | 1 week |
| Full audit | 30 to 50 templates, third-party scripts, server, costed action plan | 3,500 to 6,000 | 2 to 3 weeks |
| Image optimisation | WebP or AVIF, lazy loading, dimensions, CDN | 2,000 to 4,500 | 1 to 2 weeks |
| Third-party script clean-up | Tag manager triage, deferred chat and video loading | 1,500 to 3,500 | 1 week |
| Catalogue template rework | Lighter filters and configurator for INP | 4,000 to 10,000 | 3 to 5 weeks |
| Server and CMS | Caching, CDN, PHP or CMS upgrade | 1,500 to 5,000 | 1 to 2 weeks |
| Accessibility check (BFSG, WCAG 2.1 AA) | Templates and forms | 1,500 to 4,000 | 1 to 2 weeks |
| Monthly monitoring | CrUX dashboard, regression alerts | 200 to 500 per month | Ongoing |
A good audit delivers a costed, page-by-page action plan with the expected gain on each metric. Be wary of reports that simply export a Lighthouse score to PDF: they measure a lab test, not the experience of your buyers on a smartphone over 4G in an industrial park.
What speed is worth to a manufacturer
Rankings are only part of the story. Core Web Vitals mainly affect conversion: a procurement engineer browsing your catalogue between two meetings gives up if a product page takes 6 seconds to appear. The table below shows an illustrative scenario, to be validated against your own analytics.
| Metric (illustrative scenario) | Before fixes | After fixes |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile LCP (75th percentile) | 5.8 s | 2.3 s |
| INP on catalogue filters | 420 ms | 160 ms |
| Mobile bounce rate | 58% | 42% |
| Pages per mobile visit | 2.1 | 3.0 |
| Mobile quote request conversion rate | 0.8% | 1.3% |
| URLs rated good in Search Console | 18% | 85% |

Mini case study
Jonas, marketing lead at a pump manufacturer in Berlin (illustrative persona), tracks 6,000 visits a month, 52% of them on mobile, so 3,120 mobile visits. At 0.8% conversion, mobile brings 25 quote requests a month. If the fixes lift that rate to 1.3%, he gets 40 requests, 15 more. With 15% of quotes won, an average order of 6,000 EUR and a 30% gross margin, those 15 requests are worth about 2.25 orders, 13,500 EUR of revenue and 4,050 EUR of margin per month. Against an investment of 14,000 EUR (full audit 4,500 EUR, fixes 9,500 EUR), payback comes in about 3.5 months. Even if the real gain is only half the assumption, the spend is recovered within 7 months.
FAQ
Is a Lighthouse score of 90 enough?
No. Google relies on CrUX field data from the last 28 days, while Lighthouse simulates a single lab load. A site can score 92 in testing and still fail INP at 320 ms for real users.
Do we need a rebuild to pass the thresholds?
Rarely as a first step: images and third-party scripts often explain most of the delay, for 3,500 to 8,000 EUR of fixes. A rebuild at 15,000 to 40,000 EUR makes sense mainly when the CMS or PHP version is no longer supported.
How long before Search Console shows the result?
Allow 4 to 6 weeks after release, the time it takes for the 28-day CrUX window to refresh. The effect on quote requests, however, shows up in your analytics within the first month.
Do Core Web Vitals really improve rankings?
They are a secondary ranking signal that separates pages of similar relevance. The main gain is conversion: a few tenths of a point on quote request rate matter more than one or two ranking positions.
What annual budget keeps the site in the green?
Monthly monitoring at 200 to 500 EUR, so 2,400 to 6,000 EUR a year, is enough to catch regressions. Add a one-off check at 600 to 1,200 EUR after each major addition, such as a new configurator or marketing tool.
