Choosing an Online Payment Provider for SMBs in West Africa: Fees, Settlement and Integration

E-commerce

The verdict in three sentences

For an SMB in Dakar or Abidjan, the right online payment provider depends first on the share of local customers paying by mobile money (Wave, Orange Money) and the share of foreign customers paying by card. Fees range from 1 to 3.5%, settlement from D+1 to D+7 and integration costs 800,000 to 3,000,000 FCFA excl. VAT (about EUR 1,220 to 4,570). In most cases the right answer is a local aggregator for mobile money, complemented by an international player if more than 20% of revenue comes from abroad.

Provider families in 2026

A CFO comparing offers should separate three families. Direct integrations with an operator (Wave Business, Orange Money Webpay) offer the lowest fees on their own channel but cover only one method. Regional aggregators (PayDunya, CinetPay, Paytech, Bictorys, Intouch) combine mobile money and cards in a single integration. International players such as Stripe accept cards worldwide but do not open merchant accounts for companies registered in Senegal without an entity abroad, which often means using an aggregator for cards.

Payment methodMerchant fee 2026 (order of magnitude)Settlement timeCoverage
Wave Business (direct)1%D+0 to D+1Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Burkina Faso
Orange Money (via Webpay or aggregator)1.5 to 2.5%D+1 to D+3Orange countries in the WAEMU zone
Free Money (via aggregator)1.5 to 2.5%D+1 to D+3Senegal
Local Visa or Mastercard (via aggregator)2.5 to 3.5%D+3 to D+7WAEMU and international cards
International card (Stripe via foreign entity)about 2.9% + EUR 0.25D+2 to D+7Worldwide
Bank transfer0 to 0.5%D+1 to D+3B2B, large amounts

These rates are negotiable. Above 20 to 30 million FCFA in monthly volume, most aggregators grant a 0.3 to 0.8 point discount.

Integration cost and KYC requirements

Integrating a payment module is more than a button. It covers the mobile payment flow, webhook handling (confirmation, failure, expiry), reconciliation with accounting, refunds and testing. The budget depends on the number of methods and the level of automation.

Integration scope2026 budget (FCFA excl. VAT)Timeline
One aggregator, existing site, simple payment800,000 to 1,200,0002 to 3 weeks
Direct Wave + aggregator for cards and Orange Money1,400,000 to 2,000,0003 to 5 weeks
Multi-provider with automatic failover2,000,000 to 3,000,0005 to 8 weeks
Subscriptions and recurring payments+ 500,000 to 900,000+ 2 weeks
Automatic accounting reconciliation+ 400,000 to 800,000+ 1 to 2 weeks

For KYC, prepare the trade register extract (RCCM), the tax ID (NINEA in Senegal), articles of association, the manager's ID, a company bank account and sometimes a description of the business and online terms of sale. Merchant account opening takes 3 days to 4 weeks. Training, travel and remote sales of regulated products face enhanced checks.

Mrs Sow, CFO of a training company in Dakar, collects 15 million FCFA per month online, 65% via mobile money and 35% by card (diaspora). With a single aggregator at 3% on everything, her fees are 450,000 FCFA per month. By routing Wave directly at 1% for 45% of volume, Orange Money at 2% for 20% and cards at 3.2% for 35%, fees drop to 67,500 + 60,000 + 168,000 = 295,500 FCFA. Savings reach 154,500 FCFA per month, or 1,854,000 FCFA (about EUR 2,830) per year, for a 1,600,000 FCFA integration: payback in just over 10 months.

FAQ

Can a Senegalese company open a Stripe account?

Not directly in 2026: Stripe does not onboard companies registered in Senegal. SMBs use a local aggregator that accepts international cards at 2.5 to 3.5%, or an entity abroad.

Which provider settles fastest?

Wave usually settles the same or next day. Aggregators settle between D+1 and D+7 depending on the method, often with a minimum withdrawal of 5,000 to 50,000 FCFA.

Should we keep cash on delivery?

For consumer distribution, yes: it still represents 30 to 60% of online orders in Senegal. A 2 to 5% discount on upfront mobile payment grows its share quickly.

Are fees subject to VAT?

Yes, provider fees carry 18% VAT in Senegal, which must be included in the real cost calculation.

What if a provider goes down?

With two providers and automatic failover, the site offers the other channel within seconds. One hour of downtime on a peak day can cost 5 to 10% of daily revenue.
