Cameroon e-commerce: a tough but openable market in 2026
Cameroon (28 M inhabitants) remains a challenging e-commerce market: low bank card penetration rate (8-12% adults), mistrust of online payment, fragmented logistics infrastructure, unpredictable CEMAC customs. But: MTN MoMo (12 M active users) + Orange Money CM (8 M) = 20 M active mobile money accounts, or ~71% of adult population.
Cameroon 2026 e-commerce market: ~120-180 billion FCFA (CAMSEC + GSMA estimates). Players: Jumia CM (historic leader, weakened), Glotelho, Kerawa Shopping, plus emerging multitude of niche pure players (fashion, electronics, cosmetics, agri).
ShopCameroun.cm (fashion + accessories + cosmetics, founded 2022), contacted me in February 2025. 850 orders/year. Fourteen months later: 4,800 orders/year (×5.6), 95 M FCFA revenue. Here is the mechanism.
H2: Payment, delivery, customs — the 3 pillars
Payment. Smobilpay is the reference aggregator in Cameroon (single integration to MTN MoMo CM + Orange Money CM + Express Union Mobile + YUP + Visa/Mastercard cards). REST API + SDK. Fees: 1.5-2.2% per transaction by volume. Alternative: SOCIETE GENERALE Cameroun YUP Pay, or direct integration MTN MoMo Open API + Orange Money Web Payment (more complex but 0.8-1.2% cheaper).
Douala + Yaoundé delivery. Cover these 2 cities first (60% of solvent market). Options:
- Glovo CM (same-day rapid delivery, 28-35% merchant commission, practical for light + food categories)
- Express Union Cameroon (agency network, 24-48h, 1,500-3,500 FCFA / parcel)
- DHL Express CM (premium, 24h, 4,500-12,000 FCFA / parcel by weight)
- Partner riders (contracted motorbikes): 1,800-3,000 FCFA / Douala delivery, 2,200-3,500 FCFA Yaoundé
CEMAC customs. For import from China / Dubai / Europe: Port Autonome Douala (PAD) clearance. Duties: 5-30% by category + VAT 19.25% + various fees. Clearance time: 5-15 days average. Mandatory freight forwarder (Bolloré, GETMA, MSC). For drop-shipping: de facto legally prohibited (formalities). 2026 strategy: local stock in Cameroon + drop-ship via registered Dubai reseller.

Smobilpay or direct MTN/Orange integration?
Smobilpay: aggregator, 1 integration, multi-providers, 1.5-2.2%. Ideal launch and <500 orders/month volumes. Direct integration MTN MoMo Open API + Orange Money Web Payment: 0.8-1.2% per transaction (50-60% savings vs Smobilpay), but 2 distinct integrations + average documentation + 6-12 weeks dev time. Recommended switch around 1,000-2,000 orders/month.
Jumia CM or own marketplace?
Jumia CM: massive audience but 12-18% commission + algorithm unfavorable to small merchants in 2026. Own marketplace (Shopify, Next.js custom): full control + full margin, but traffic acquisition cost (Meta Ads, TikTok, influencers) 12-22% of revenue. Hybrid strategy: Jumia for visibility + own site for loyalty conversion + WhatsApp commerce for relationship.
WhatsApp commerce: still relevant in Cameroon in 2026?
Yes, massively. 60-75% of Cameroonian e-commerce purchases transit via WhatsApp (catalog + chat + Smobilpay payment link). WhatsApp Business API + Smobilpay integration + responder bot = light stack that converts better than classic site for certain categories (women fashion, cosmetics, premium accessories). Cost: 380-850 KFCFA setup + 95-280 KFCFA/month.
CEMAC customs: how much to plan for 1 × 20-foot container?
Variable by content. Fashion / textile: 20-30% duties + 19.25% VAT + freight forwarder 850 KFCFA-1.5 M FCFA + port handling 1.2-2.5 M FCFA + warehouse transport 280-580 KFCFA. Total: 30-45% of declared value. 5-15 day delay. Plan 6-10 week cash flow between Chinese supplier payment and Douala sale launch.
Riders or Glovo for delivery?
Recommended mix. Glovo: orders <8 KFCFA, same-day urgency, expat / affluent classes Bonanjo/Bonapriso/Bastos (salty 28-35% commission). Own riders (3-5 contracted motorbikes): orders 8-50 KFCFA, extended Douala + Yaoundé zones, 1,800-3,500 FCFA fixed cost (much cheaper at volume). Express Union: bulky orders or outside Douala/Yaoundé (Bafoussam, Bamenda, Garoua).
