Business Website Cost by Feature: A 2026 Line-Item Breakdown

The verdict in three sentences

When a small or mid-sized business receives three quotes at USD 7,000, 16,000 and 38,000, the agencies are almost never pricing the same scope. The only reliable method is to break each quote down feature by feature and compare every line against a market grid. The gaps concentrate on four items: client portal, multilingual, initial SEO and maintenance, which alone can double the bill.

The 2026 market grid, line by line

The figures below are 2026 estimates for SMB projects in Europe and North America, excluding VAT or sales tax. Agencies in London and New York sit at the top of each range, often 20 to 40 % above mid-sized cities; freelancers sit at the bottom.

Why three quotes have nothing in common

The USD 7,000 quote usually relies on an existing WordPress theme, 8 to 10 pages, a basic form and no SEO. The USD 16,000 quote typically includes custom design, a blog, a CRM-connected form and an SEO audit. The USD 38,000 quote almost always adds a client portal, a second language and editorial support. A London or Manhattan agency could quote the same C scope at USD 55,000 or more.

None is necessarily overpriced or too cheap. The real question is which scope matches your 12-month commercial goal.

The forgotten lines that cost the most

Three items often go missing from low quotes: copywriting (USD 350 to 950 per page if the agency writes), migrating old content with 301 redirects (USD 600 to 2,400) and privacy compliance (cookie banner, policies, GDPR or state privacy laws). Leaving them out does not remove the need: the business pays later, on time and materials or in internal hours.

For reference, Kolonell publishes its own grid in FCFA: a Starter brochure website costs 800,000 to 1,200,000 FCFA (1,220 to 1,830 EUR), Growth 1,200,000 to 2,000,000 FCFA (1,830 to 3,050 EUR) and Premium 2,000,000 to 3,500,000 FCFA (3,050 to 5,340 EUR). A client portal is a custom application, from 2,500,000 FCFA (3,810 EUR) for a simple scope. Maintenance runs 35,000, 75,000 or 120,000 FCFA a month (53, 114 or 183 EUR); languages are set in the quote.

Mini case study

Daniel, owner of a 25-person industrial maintenance company in Columbus, Ohio, compares the three quotes. His goal: 8 qualified quote requests a month, with an average deal of USD 7,000 and a 25 % close rate.

He does not need a client portal in year one. He picks the Quote B scope (USD 16,000) and adds copywriting for 6 service pages (6 x 550 = USD 3,300), for USD 19,300. If the site hits its goal, it generates 8 x 0.25 x 7,000 = USD 14,000 in monthly revenue. At a 35 % gross margin, payback is 19,300 / (14,000 x 0.35) = about 4 months.

FAQ

How do I get comparable quotes?

Send the same feature list to all three agencies, with page count and languages, and ask for a price per line. This typically narrows the spread between quotes by 50 to 70 %.

Can a USD 3,500 website be enough?

For a tradesperson or solo consultant with 5 pages and a form, yes. For a business that wants B2B leads, missing SEO and weak content often cap the site at a handful of enquiries a year.

Does multilingual double the price?

Rarely: expect 20 to 40 % more, with or without professional translation. Human translation runs around USD 0.12 to 0.18 per word in 2026.

Should maintenance start in month one?

Yes if the site runs on a CMS: security updates ship monthly. USD 75 to 300 a month costs less than a post-hack clean-up, often billed USD 1,000 to 3,000.

What deposit is normal?

The market standard is 30 to 40 % upfront, 30 to 40 % at design sign-off and the balance at launch. A 100 % upfront request is a red flag.
