The verdict in three sentences
For a European wholesaler invoicing 900 trade customers, SEPA B2B direct debit is the most direct lever to bring a 58-day DSO down to 35 to 40 days. The choice between GoCardless and Stripe depends on your average invoice: a capped percentage gets expensive on EUR 1,000 invoices, a flat EUR 0.35 per debit far less so. The real work lies elsewhere: collecting B2B mandates, wiring them into your B2B store and reconciling automatically in the ERP.
Cheque, transfer, direct debit: what each method costs in 2026
Cheques remain common among wholesalers in France and Belgium, especially with tradespeople, hospitality and small retailers. They cost time (posting, depositing, clearing), reconciliation effort and chasing. Transfers depend on the customer's goodwill. SEPA direct debit flips the logic: you trigger collection on the due date.
| Criterion | Cheque | Customer-initiated transfer | SEPA B2B direct debit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average collection delay after due date | 10 to 20 days | 5 to 25 days | 0 to 2 business days |
| Reconciliation time per payment | 3 to 5 minutes | 2 to 4 minutes | Automatic |
| Payer can dispute | No | No | No under a B2B mandate, 8 weeks under CORE |
| Incident rate | Bounced cheques rare but costly | Frequent late payment | 1 to 3% failures |
| Indicative bank cost | Deposit and handling fees | Low | EUR 0.35 to about EUR 4 depending on provider |
| Effect on DSO | Neutral to negative | Neutral | 15 to 25 day reduction observed |
The decisive legal point: a B2B mandate (SEPA Business to Business) does not let the debtor dispute an authorised debit, unlike a CORE mandate that allows 8 weeks of no-questions refunds. In return, the customer's bank must register the mandate, which adds an onboarding step.
GoCardless or Stripe: the numbers
The fees below are 2026 orders of magnitude from public standard pricing. Both providers negotiate above a few thousand transactions a month.
| Criterion | GoCardless | Stripe (SEPA Direct Debit) |
|---|---|---|
| Fee per successful debit | Around 1% + EUR 0.20, capped around EUR 4 on standard plan | EUR 0.35 |
| Cost on a EUR 1,000 invoice | About EUR 4 | EUR 0.35 |
| Cost on a EUR 150 invoice | About EUR 1.70 | EUR 0.35 |
| B2B mandates | Supported | Supported, check by customer country |
| Automatic retry after failure | Yes, built-in retry logic | To configure |
| Key strength | Direct debit specialist, collections tooling | One account for cards, SEPA and transfers |
| Failure or dispute fees | A few euros per incident | A few euros per incident |
For a wholesaler with a EUR 1,000 average invoice, Stripe costs about 10 times less per transaction. GoCardless regains the edge if your invoices are small and numerous, or if you value its fine-grained failure handling. The right answer comes from your own invoice distribution.
Integration: B2B store, ERP and mandates
A payment provider does not run the project for you. You need:
- a mandate signing flow inside the B2B store's customer area, with reminders to existing customers;
- collection on due date triggered from ERP invoices, with advance notice sent to the customer;
- automatic reconciliation of successful debits and failure handling (retry, account hold above a threshold);
- a dashboard for DSO, mandate signature rate and failures per customer.
At Kolonell, this kind of integration sits in our custom application grid: simple 2,500,000 to 4,000,000 FCFA (EUR 3,810 to 6,100) if the store and ERP already expose clean APIs, medium 4,000,000 to 7,000,000 FCFA (EUR 6,100 to 10,670) in most cases, complex 7,000,000 to 15,000,000+ FCFA (EUR 10,670 to 22,870+) for a legacy or multi-entity ERP. The rest is on quote. Timeline: 6 to 10 weeks.

Pieter, CFO of a hygiene and packaging wholesaler in Antwerp, turns over EUR 18 million with 900 customers and 1,500 invoices a month at an average EUR 1,000. Goal: 70% of invoices on SEPA B2B direct debit.
- DSO cut from 58 to 38 days: 20 days x (18,000,000 / 365) = about EUR 986,000 of cash freed
- Short-term financing avoided at 4.5%: about EUR 44,400 a year
- Reconciliation removed: 1,050 payments x 4 min = 70 hours a month, EUR 29,400 a year at EUR 35 an hour
- Stripe fees: 1,050 x EUR 0.35 x 12 = EUR 4,410 a year (versus about EUR 50,400 with a EUR 4 cap)
- Medium-tier project: 7,000,000 FCFA (EUR 10,670), maintenance 75,000 FCFA a month (EUR 114)
First-year net gain: about EUR 56,000 after fees, failures and the project. Provider choice alone is worth more than EUR 45,000 a year.
FAQ
Will our customers accept direct debit?
In practice, 50 to 70% of regular customers sign if you offer something in return, such as a 0.5% discount or a lower free-delivery threshold. Large accounts refuse more often and stay on transfer.
What happens when a debit fails?
Expect 1 to 3% failures, mostly for insufficient funds. The system retries automatically 3 to 5 days later and can hold new orders after a second failure if you wish.
Can a customer dispute a B2B debit?
No, an authorised debit under a B2B mandate is not refundable without cause. Under a CORE mandate, the debtor has 8 weeks to request a refund.
Do we need to change banks?
No, both GoCardless and Stripe pay out to your existing account, usually within 2 to 7 business days. Your bank is only involved for the SEPA creditor identifier, which is free or nearly so.
How long until we are live?
Provider setup takes a few days. Full integration with the B2B store and ERP takes 6 to 10 weeks, then 2 to 3 months to collect most mandates.
Let's scope your project. Send us your invoice volume, ERP and B2B platform, and we will price the SEPA integration, the mandate flow and a 6 to 10 week plan. Detailed quote within 48 h. WhatsApp +221 77 596 93 33.
