Advanced Email Marketing in Africa: Deliverability, Segmentation, and Automations That Sell

Digital Marketing

People often say email is dead in Africa, that everything happens on WhatsApp. That is false. Email remains the only channel you truly own: no algorithm gets in the way, no account suspension cuts you off from your list. Done well, it shows the best return on investment of any channel. The problem is not email itself, it is that most SMEs do it badly: sending from a poorly configured address, bought lists, identical messages for everyone. This article fixes all that.

Deliverability first

An email that lands in spam does not exist. Deliverability is the technical foundation without which nothing else counts. Three DNS records are mandatory.

SPF, DKIM, DMARC explained simply

  • SPF (Sender Policy Framework): declares which servers are allowed to send emails on your behalf. Without correct SPF, Gmail and Outlook get suspicious.
  • DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail): cryptographically signs your emails to prove they were not tampered with in transit.
  • DMARC: tells inboxes what to do if SPF or DKIM fail (reject, quarantine, or let through), and sends you reports.

Since 2024, Gmail and Yahoo require all three records for any volume sender. Without them, your deliverability rates collapse. The good news: platforms like Brevo or Mailchimp walk you step by step through adding these records at your domain host.

List hygiene and reputation

  • Never send to a bought list: it is the surest way to burn your domain.
  • Clean addresses that bounce (hard bounces) immediately.
  • Use double opt-in: the person confirms their subscription with a click. Smaller list, but far healthier.
  • Warm up a new domain progressively: start with a few hundred sends and ramp volume over two to three weeks.

Segmentation: stop sending the same thing to everyone

A generic message to 5,000 people performs worse than three targeted messages to subgroups. Segment by:

  • Behavior: have they already bought? do they open your emails? did they click recently?
  • Lifecycle: new contact, active customer, dormant customer.
  • Interest: which product category, which city, which language.
  • Value: big customers vs small, to tailor offers.

Segmentation is the number one lever for improving rates. An email sent to the right subgroup can triple the click rate compared to a mass send.

The essential automations

An automation (workflow) is a sequence of emails triggered by an action, running on its own. Three workflows generate almost all the money.

Welcome sequence

Triggered on sign-up. Three to four emails over a week: who you are, what you offer, social proof, then a first offer. This is when attention is highest. A good welcome sequence often generates more revenue than all other campaigns combined.

Abandoned cart recovery

For those selling online. The customer added a product to the cart without paying. A reminder 1 hour later, then 24 hours later with a small incentive, typically recovers 10 to 20% of lost carts.

Re-engagement of dormants

For contacts who have opened nothing in 60 or 90 days. A "we missed you?" email with a strong offer, followed by cleaning out those who still do not react. This protects your sender reputation while recovering some of the lost.

Compliance: GDPR and data

Even operating from Senegal, as soon as you handle European contacts or use European tools, GDPR applies. In Senegal, the personal data law and the CDP (Personal Data Protection Commission) also govern collection. Simple rules:

  • Explicit consent before adding anyone to a list.
  • Visible unsubscribe link in every email.
  • The ability for the person to request deletion of their data.
  • If you centralize customer data, a lightweight CDP (Customer Data Platform) can help, but a good emailing tool with custom fields is enough for most SMEs.

Which tools to choose

  • Brevo (formerly Sendinblue): excellent value for money, French interface, handles email + SMS + WhatsApp, generous free tier. Our default recommendation for Senegalese SMEs.
  • Mailchimp: very complete, but pricier and in English.
  • MailerLite: simple and affordable to start.

Expect from 0 FCFA (free tier up to a few hundred sends per day) to 15,000 - 40,000 FCFA per month for an active SME.

Worked example: "Ndakaaru Foods"

Ndakaaru Foods, a Dakar caterer, had a list of 2,400 emails collected via its site and events, but only sent random promotions, 9% open rate.

After implementation: SPF/DKIM/DMARC configuration on Brevo, segmentation into three groups (individuals, businesses, dormants), automated welcome sequence, and a monthly seasonal menu email.

Results over three months:

  • Open rate rose from 9% to 31%.
  • Average click rate 6.2%.
  • The welcome sequence converts 14% of new subscribers into a first order.
  • Revenue directly attributed to email: 1,850,000 FCFA over the quarter, for a tool cost of 30,000 FCFA.

The trigger for this success was not spectacular new content, but repaired deliverability plus segmentation: the right messages finally reached the right inbox, the right people.

FAQ

Is email still worth it versus WhatsApp?

Yes, and the two are complementary. WhatsApp for the immediate and conversational, email for long content, automated sequences, and ownership of your audience.

How long to configure SPF/DKIM/DMARC?

One to two hours with the Brevo or Mailchimp wizard, plus a few hours of DNS propagation. It is a one-time investment.

How often to send?

One to four times a month for most SMEs. Better one good monthly email than four mediocre weekly ones that drive people away.

How to build a list without buying contacts?

Lead magnets on your site and socials, sign-up form, in-store collection with consent, and conversion of your existing WhatsApp contacts.

What to do if many emails bounce?

Clean immediately, check your DNS configuration, and slow the volume while restoring reputation. A high bounce rate is an alarm signal to address fast.
