The night that founder figured it out
A Senegalese fintech founder called us one evening last March, from his hotel room in Marcory. His board had just told him: "Launch the Ivorian subsidiary, it costs about the same as Dakar". He had spent two days touring offices in Plateau and Zone 4: the prices were double what he was paying at Point E. He was lost.
This misunderstanding is recurring. Two UEMOA countries, same currency, shared OHADA — therefore people assume identical costs. Wrong. Abidjan is one of the most expensive economic capitals in West Africa, and Dakar on some lines remains very affordable.
At Kolonell we have helped a dozen SMEs arbitrate between these two markets. Here are the real 2026 numbers.
Rents: the most visible gap
In Abidjan Plateau, in a decent building (Tour Postel, Immeuble Alpha 2000, Belle Côte), an 80 m² office rents for 1,200,000 to 2,000,000 FCFA / month. The same standard in Dakar Plateau (Avenue Léopold Sédar Senghor, rue Carnot) drops to 700,000 – 1,100,000 FCFA / month.
Outside the core, the gap shrinks. Cocody II Plateaux and Almadies are roughly equivalent: 600,000 to 900,000 FCFA for 80 m². Marcory-Zone 4 stays pricier than Mermoz or Sacré-Cœur.
Coworking: the transition option
For an early-stage startup, coworking is often the right path before committing to a lease. In Abidjan, Seedstars Hub, Babi Workhub and Akwaba Workspace charge 80,000 to 180,000 FCFA / month per fixed seat. In Dakar, Impact Hub and Jokkolabs land at 70,000 – 150,000 FCFA / month.
Tech salaries: Abidjan pays more, but not everywhere
The dev market has exploded in Abidjan thanks to fintech hubs (Wave CI, Djamo, Bizao). A senior fullstack with 5 years' experience earns 900,000 to 1,400,000 FCFA gross. In Dakar, the same profile sits at 650,000 to 1,100,000 FCFA.
For juniors, the gap sometimes inverts: Dakar has more mature engineering schools (ESP, Sup'Info, Sonatel Academy), and entry salaries are surprisingly competitive (250,000 – 450,000 FCFA). Abidjan: 350,000 – 550,000 FCFA.
The summary table
| Monthly item | Abidjan (FCFA) | Dakar (FCFA) |
|---|---|---|
| Plateau office 80 m² | 1,200,000 – 2,000,000 | 700,000 – 1,100,000 |
| Coworking fixed seat | 80,000 – 180,000 | 70,000 – 150,000 |
| Senior fullstack gross | 900,000 – 1,400,000 | 650,000 – 1,100,000 |
| Senior sales gross | 600,000 – 1,000,000 | 500,000 – 850,000 |
| Pro fiber 100 Mbps | 90,000 – 140,000 | 65,000 – 110,000 |
| Electricity (80 m² office) | 90,000 – 180,000 | 80,000 – 160,000 |
Internet, power, banking: the hidden costs
Pro internet in Abidjan via Orange CI or MTN runs at 90,000 – 140,000 FCFA / month for a 100 Mbps SLA fiber. Sonatel in Dakar stays around 65,000 – 110,000 FCFA for equivalent service. Over 12 months that is a 300,000 FCFA gap — meaningful for a bootstrapper.
Electricity is roughly comparable, with a slight Ivorian premium due to higher CIE peak tariffs. Outages are rare in Abidjan Plateau, more common in some Dakar areas.
On banking, pro account maintenance fees range from 8,000 to 25,000 FCFA / month in both countries. But international wires cost 30 to 40% more at SGCI / BICICI than at Société Générale Senegal for equivalent amounts.

Our recommendation by profile
Early-stage B2B SaaS: stay in Dakar. Structural costs 35 to 50% lower, accessible tech talent, BCEAO lets you bill Ivorian clients without friction. One SaaS startup we support generated 28 M FCFA in CI from its Point E office in 11 months.
Fintech or wallet: Abidjan, no hesitation. The density of partners (banks, telcos, processors), local deeptech and proximity to BCEAO regulators justify the premium.
Pro services firm (consulting, audit, design): start in Dakar with one Abidjan mission week per month. When the Ivorian pipeline exceeds 40 M FCFA / year, flip.
E-commerce / DTC: enter via Dakar (mature logistics, contained costs), Abidjan in V2 after 12-18 months.
Conclusion: the "same UEMOA, same cost" myth
No, it is not the same. On rents and senior salaries, Abidjan is 30 to 80% more expensive. On connectivity and pro services, Dakar still wins. And the arbitrage is never binary: most of our clients keep a Senegalese base structure and only add an Ivorian SARL when local revenue justifies it.

FAQ
What total budget to launch a tech startup in Abidjan vs Dakar in 2026?
For 12 months, a 5-person team (2 devs + 1 sales + 1 ops + founder), 80 m² Plateau office, you are around 95 M FCFA in Abidjan versus 62 M FCFA in Dakar. The 33 M FCFA gap is mostly rent and senior salaries.
Is the cost of living for expats very different?
Yes. A standing 3-bed in Cocody II Plateaux or Riviera costs 900,000 to 1,800,000 FCFA / month. The equivalent in Almadies or Ngor is 600,000 – 1,200,000 FCFA. Restaurants and international schools are 20 to 35% more expensive in Abidjan.
Can you really stay in Dakar and invoice CI clients?
Yes for dematerialised services and B2B. As long as the work does not require regular physical presence in CI and you stay under the 50 M FCFA / year permanent establishment threshold, it is legal. Beyond that, Ivorian tax authorities may requalify.
Is fiber internet equally reliable in both cities?
Yes, equivalent on Plateau Abidjan / Plateau Dakar / Almadies / Cocody. In the suburbs, Dakar has a slight edge thanks to Sonatel coverage. Abidjan is catching up fast via Orange CI and MTN heavy investment since 2024.
