Switching to developer career at 30 in 2026: real roadmap

Dev career switch at 30: possible and profitable, but framed

Many enter tech at 30+ coming from finance, marketing, law, biology, teaching. It is feasible and even an asset (domain expertise + maturity). But it is also demanding: 9-15 months of intense effort, precise technical choices, solid portfolio.

I have coached a dozen career switches in Senegal and France over 3 years. Here is the roadmap that works in 2026.

H2: Bootcamp vs self-taught vs school — how to choose

Intensive bootcamp (3-6 months). Simplon Senegal (free, selective), Sonatel Academy (subsidized), Le Wagon (remote, ~5-7 KEUR), Ironhack remote. Pro: framework + alumni network + career coaching. Con: high intensity (40-50 h / week), not for those keeping a job.

Self-taught (6-12 months). Combo OpenClassrooms + freeCodeCamp + The Odin Project + books (Eloquent JavaScript, You Don't Know JS) + personal projects. Pro: flexibility (juggle current job), minimal cost (0-200 EUR). Con: less network, harder to land first job without diploma.

Long school (12-24 months). EPI Tech Senegal, Stech, university CS masters. Pro: recognized diploma, real alumni network. Con: long, costly (1-4 M FCFA / year), unsuited to express career switch.

My 2026 view for 30 year-olds: combo Simplon Senegal (if accepted) or Le Wagon bootcamp remote, then 3-6 months self-taught for specialization. Avoid long school unless aiming at large accounts / ESN that look at diplomas.

H2: Target languages at 30 in 2026

StackLearn inSenegal demandEurope remote demandFirst local salary

My advice: TypeScript + Node.js + React/Next + PostgreSQL. Most globally demanded stack, transferable from frontend to backend, maximum optionality for first job.

H2: 12-month career switch roadmap

Months 1-3 (foundations). HTML/CSS/JavaScript basics. Build 3-5 mini-projects (todo list, calculator, weather app). Read You Don't Know JS and Eloquent JavaScript. Count 25-35 h / week if keeping a job, 50-60 h if full-time.

Months 4-6 (frameworks and backend). React + Next.js. Node.js + Express. PostgreSQL basics. Build 2 full-stack projects (simplified Twitter clone + e-commerce dashboard). Start GitHub account with regular activity.

Months 7-9 (portfolio and specialization). Build 1 serious portfolio project (3-6 weeks of focused work, ideally useful, niche SaaS or tool for community). Learn Docker, Vercel + Neon / Supabase deployment. Start contributing 1-2 times to an open source project.

Months 10-12 (job search). Optimized CV + LinkedIn (showcase personal projects, GitHub, OSS contributions). Apply to 5-10 offers / week. Spontaneous applications Wave, Sonatel, Dakar startups. Bootcamp + meetups network. Expect 2-4 months between first application and first job.

FAQ

What realistic salary for first job after 30 yr career switch?

Senegal: 250-400 KFCFA / month large account, 180-280 KFCFA SME / startup. France remote: 32-42 KEUR / yr junior. Lower than 22 yr-old fresh grad in some contexts (recruiters fear you may leave), but you progress fast afterwards (past domain skills pay off).

Should I quit my current job to switch?

No if possible. Switch while keeping job (study 20-25 h / week evenings + weekends) = 12-18 months, but financial security. Full-time switch (50-60 h / week) = 6-9 months, but needs 6-12 month salary reserve (at 30 often family expenses, so riskier).

Is bootcamp worth the cost?

Le Wagon (5-7 KEUR): yes if you value network + structure. Simplon Senegal (free): yes systematically if accepted. Bootcamps at 3-5 KEUR without network or career support: no, self-taught with freeCodeCamp + The Odin Project does better.

How many personal projects before first job?

Minimum 3-5 GitHub-visible projects, with 1-2 substantial (3+ weeks of work). Not just copied tutorials. Ideal: 1 project useful to a real community (tool for ESMT students, app for local mutual management, etc.).

Math needed for web dev?

Very little. High school algebra basics suffice for classic frontend / backend dev. Advanced math (calculus, linear algebra, stats) needed only if you aim at: data scientist, machine learning, quant finance, computer graphics. For classic web: not a blocker.
